The best thing about shaving with these blades is that after there worn out, you can use then on the house for paint or caulk removal. Now THAT's cost effective and efficient! Great video, Thanks.

Gem razors strop pretty well too. Just keep a strop and some needle nose pliers in your bathroom, hold the blade by the thick part, and strop it. Since it's so thin, you don't have to strop much. I strop aggressively on the soft side about 5 reps, and strop correctly on the other side a few reps. I strop after use to dry the blade and cure the compound a bit. Don't get me wrong, you're not going to get that out-of-box sharpness from stropping, but you can keep it at "third shave" levels for a looooong time.

I love the 1912. It's probably my favourite razor to use. It's a completely different experience. I tend to find myself shaving by sound as much as watching.

Great video Geo, I love my SE razors too. Just to clarify for viewers, the SE blade that you see in hardware stores for scraping etc is COMPLETELY different to the SE blades used for shaving, although they look identical. So please do not use the industrial ones for shaving, go to a website like TedPella and get the medical variety, they come in coated stainless or carbon steel (carbon blades must be dried completely after use to avoid rust) keep the awesome vids coming!!

Just got four of these razors from a junk shop along with 25 others! all for £15! They are all in wonderful condition, no brassing at all. Two are USA made, ever ready brand, with a different handle to the one you are using. The other two are British made, one Gem branded the other ever ready, both with the same handle as yours. They all have PAT 1912 stamped where the handle screws in. I'm more than a little curious to give them a try.

You can use a double edge blade in these. Use scissors to clip the ends off the blade so it fits under the door with some clearance. Then cut off one cutting edge so when in the razor, the spring is putting the minimal amount of pressure on the blade against the stops. Experiment with a used blade until you get it right. Costs less. Lasts longer. Also easier on the face than Gillette.
@b.bluebriz6147
@b.bluebriz6147 10 лет назад
Obviously it's a YMMV thing, but the SE blades generally last a bit longer than DE blades. So if you usually only get 4-6 shaves from a DE, you might get 8-10 or more with an SE.

I do hope that Geo was joking about the hardware blades!!! I have been on the TedPella site but never ordered - Walgreens has the GEM blades (they may be packaging them under their own Walgreen label now) and are well priced! btw, I was super lucky, while searching for and finding a DE razor in my dads bathroom closet, I found a GEM Single Edge Razor as well. I was thinking of buying one of these. I wonder if a DE blade would work with this razor?
@BriteTap
@BriteTap 3 года назад
I had the same thought and tried it because I like Astra DE blades and thought I might be able to use them. Unfortunately, this does not work for a variety of reasons. DE blades are 4mm wider than SE and won't fit into a Gem razor. I tried clipping off 2mm from each side of the DE blade and found issue number two that makes this unworkable -- DE blades are thinner and more flexible. They need to be firmly held between the upper and lower plates of the razor. The Gem just doesn't do this, so DE blades placed in the Gem will bend while shaving creating an uneven gap as you pull the blade across your face. It didn't feel safe and so I stopped at this point. SE blades are much stiffer and won't bend when in placed into the Gem razor. I think this is a function of the fact that SE blades have a spine on the non-edged side of the blade. I also think SE are a bit thicker. Finally, the spine on the SE blade makes it easier to handle when inserting it into the razor. DE lacks this spine and so you have a much higher chance of cutting your fingers trying to insert a DE blade in an SE razor like the Gem. The bottom line, it just doesn't work.

Hi. Nice. With single edge razors like that (I think that's the Artist Club type), could you shave as fast a cartridge (I just use a cheap DE just awhile ago which I've not used in year, I tend to go back to 5 blade battery powered cartridge types) as cartridge coz it seen you can angle that type of razor to a much steeper angle (as steep as cartridge blade angles)? Is that type the as close as a straight but as fast as cartridge but as safe as a DE & cartridge (it seem like the perfect razor:-)? Now I'm thinking of going single edge Artist Club type. Can you resharpen the blade (it seems thick)? Very interesting razor. I like thin and long it is- perfect for sideburns. Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31

Steven, Feather says that you can get 10-12 shaves from one Artist Club blade. I'm happy if I can get 6-8.

I hope someone will create an easy to use sharpening tool (80,000) for the GEM blades and be as sharp as obsidian, hehe, they are thick which I like. I just bought an all brass version of the 1912 just awhile ago. I wish they would bring this model back all with different art deco this time. I'm going to keep the patina, it's good to know it's 100+ years old- some tech are better & better looking than the new ones like cartridges (costs 11 to 26 times vs. GEM blades & a good DE blade). By the way, on the art of manliness, I'd like to invite everyone to also be a connoisseur of fountain pens, like shaving, one is missing out on the experience of fine writing. It's also one of those 100 year old techs that, if not for marketing, trumps modern ones (modern ballpoint and rollerball pens). The fountain pen that looks good in person & is "affordable" is the Twsbi from Germany, erase proof (for writing checks) ink: Noodler's Ink (sampler is available for little money). Fountain pens like SE or DE saves the environment too (less plastics coz' they are refillable) Thanks:-)

As a safety matter, I wish that the video had made clearer that GEM single edge blades for shaving, and ones for paint scraping and sheet rock cutting, are different, although they look the same. Apparently the bevel cut on the blade's sharpened edge is different depending on whether the blade is for shaving or utility cutting. Mistakenly getting the wrong SE blade can really do a number on one's face.

+Edward Miles I found the STAR version of this razor at an estate sale. Cleaned it up and put in a SE blade out of a 50 pack of utility blades. I remember wondering as I was preparing to shave if there was a significant difference between the utility blade and a blade that might have come with the razor. I wasn't impressed with the razor partly because of the "stance", but also the smoothness of the shave was lacking. I went back to the Gillette "New", but may give this one another go once I find the proper blade. Thanks for bringing this issue up.

+Cattmann Good luck. In my experience, when the SE blade is right, shaving with a GEM razor is very pleasant and effective.

Why is a 1930's razor called the "1912"? (P.s.: the scraper blades have a different bevel on the cutting edge, and would really hurt if used instead of the shaving blades, although admittedly the two types look identical.)
