Flight Testing the Gemini Version 2 High Altitude Long Duration FPV/UAV:
Climbed very slowly to altitude, keeping a reserve in the battery. Then Descended in a shallow dive, bleeding off altitude.
The total time for the flight was 2 hrs, and 2 minutes. Maximum altitude reached was 4008 meters or 13,159.6 ft. That's very nearly 2 1/2 miles high! Part of the flight was in instrument conditions, and the plane was flown manually without an autopilot. 6 cameras were on board for the flight.
1-Pilot's FPV camera with pan tilt servos
2-Observer camera (Dad cam)with pan tilt servos
3-GoPro hero 3+ mounted externally under the nose
4-GoPro hero 2 set to take video in mapping tray compartment.
5-GoPro hero 2 set to take stills(over 700) also in mapping tray
6-Mobius mounted externally to top of horizontal tail (used external power supply)
The GoPro 2 set to take video in the mapping tray shut off due to low battery most of the way throughout the flight. The flight was made below gross weight, and the altitude was achieved at a very low rate of climb, while simultaneously achieving a fairly long duration flight, so it's clear that much more altitude is possible. This entire flight was made with the Immersionrc control system Tx on low power.
Thanks for watching this video, and be sure to check out our "secret" channel: bearospaceinsider for extra content!
You can contact Wayne flyingsquirrelmodels@gmail.com for more info about the High Quality Laser cut kit that he produces.
We took lots of precautions for this flight, and we have a safe place to do it. Always be careful to minimize risk to others and be responsible!

I really like watching these kind of videos. I use fly weight shift ultralight trikes, but I can't afford it anymore. So this is the next best thing. I disabled & was wonder how much a basic setup like yours would cost. I would really like to purchase to purchase a glider, & perhaps make it solar powered to help make the battery life longer.

cameras can be added to the wingtips as well. making eh gemini a pusher would put the props in turbulent air, and cause vibrations, but would work. similar to the piaggio avanti aircraft, they have unique noise profile, if you have ever heard one. that noise is the pressure differential from the wing hitting the props. i don't consider it a good thing, but it could be done.
@skyhawk551
@skyhawk551 8 лет назад
i know that sound!! i fell in love with it's design, a few occasionally fly out of my airport where i work. i thought the noise was caused by the exhaust hitting the props.

If you took this UAV up to its maximum altitude, then let it glide then take it back up to the max how far could you potentially travel, could it fly hundreds of miles
@FPVREVIEWS
@FPVREVIEWS 7 лет назад
it would fly the furthest at a relatively high altitude, without descending, because the air is thinner, and travel through it is more efficient. This is the strategy behind commercial air flights, and the reason they expend extra fuel to get to their cruising altitude. at sea level, the theoretical max distance is 120 km, with the 3kg battery pack, in stock configuration.

Any thoughts on putting the newer super-thin and light solar cells on the upper wing surfaces? There are single engine planes already on solar with sustaining battery life- they never run out. You could at least significantly increase duration this way...

I've seen two approaches to high altitude, using lift and climbing relativily slow, and climbing very fast. still not sure which is the best, but the fast method does not need a very big plane.. ha ha. sounds like your ranger would be somewhere in the middle. Looking forward to seeing it. What equip are you running?

Nice flight! If you are planning to fly with no power on a regular basis, I recommend you look to set the speed controllers up to brake the motors and stop the props freewheeling. This would reduce the drag significantly.
@FPVREVIEWS
@FPVREVIEWS 7 лет назад
yes, you are absolutely correct, but if you notice, I actually put the plane in a slight dive, to bleed off altitude, as a glide for that height could take over an hour. so i actually wanted the extra drag. you could get a longer flight time with the brake on for sure.
@frizstyler
@frizstyler 6 лет назад
it does not reduce the drag. Also see my reply to the dude further down asking the same. I can prove it on paper if you like physics

@matthewbiehn9653
@matthewbiehn9653 6 лет назад
could you explain it to me? I believe you but I would like an explanation.
@frizstyler
@frizstyler 6 лет назад
My answer wasn't entirely right,i had forgotten about parasitic drag on a freewheeling prop. The answer is,for a given prop with a given pitch and given length, whether or not one should leave it freewheeling depends on the gliding speed. Here is a paper with test data i found: www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/misc/prop.pdf Anyway a collapsing prop is the best solution :)

Thanks 4 yr quick answer..here in Iraq we suffer high temp. weather since the end of April till the end of September..as u know temp. decreases about 6.5C each 1000meter higher..so in June ,July ,Augest & Sep. temp. at surface is 55-45C ...& that causes many electrical failure in the uavs..even the US troops got problems in using the RQ11 Raven ..as i read..any how i`m thinking of puchasing one..

200mw, with 600 high power mode in reserve. I did not use the hi power mode, as it was not needed, but did experience a couple of very short, 1 sec or so glitches. It was not a problem, as i had the failsafe set to power down to 0% throttle, and the flight controls set to flight trim. none of this was a problem. EZUHF by immersion rc was used with adversity receiver, for control. the antennas on the plane are dipoles, with one oriented horizontal, and the other vertical in the fuselage. the ground antenna was fixed, a diamond sr771 i think, and was oriented vertically, (wrong way) for the entire flight hence the glitches. a directional antenna on the tracker would be much better, but i'm not doing these kind of flights very often, so mostly worried about getting data to improve the design of components, like the battery, and future design on aircraft. thanks for the question. Cheers!
