Gemma Ward is one of the few models who not only made a splash when she made her runway debut, but her face defined the new look of the era. She enraptured designers and photographers alike, but within a few years of her meteoric rise, the same industry that built her up tried to destroy her.

She was a CHILD when she started! She was only 15 years old and since was kept on a strict diet regiment she had a very prebubescent body at the beginning of her career. How she was treated when her body matured and became womanly says a lot about the industry.

What bothers me so much now is that countries like France and Italy require the models to pay to see a doctor every 6 months to sign off that they are in good health to work as a model, but a look at any Saint Laurent or Celine runway clearly shows that piece of paper means nothing. I could go to the doctor today to get this signed, not eat for 5 months, but still be deemed healthy enough to work. Plus it is an additional expense for the models, not the clients, even though they are the ones requiring them.

I remember her. She made my teenage self dream. I even made my own wedding dress after seeing her in it in the Spring Rochas 2006 collection, a poetic beauty created by Olivier Theyskens. Gemma's face was unworldly beautiful, she always seemed so down to earth in every one of her interview. I also remember 2008 when her body changed and the industry would not accept it. So many of those models disappeared. I remember Tanya Dziahileva, an incredible alien like 17 year old young woman that no one saw after the 2010s, only to make space to spoiled brats like Kendall Jenner. It seems like the industry is changing in a positive way, but I do miss models of the 2000s, and I wish the industry would have been more human towards them even though it is a cruel and competitive world. I wish Gemma, and all of these beautiful women all the best.
@THEMODELGENE

There are some small positive changes but the root of the same problems still exist. Until the sample sizes increase at the hip, models will still be forced to starve to fit into the clothes for fashion week. He intruded into a conversation that wasn’t his, started aggressively arguing with me, defending animal cruelty, etc., and I didn’t keep quiet, I rebutted his arguments the way I would in any other context - not playing up to the “you’re my boss” thing. Some people will always crave fame... I think it's rooted in deep insecurity. Such people can only value themselves if the world values them. But fame is fleeting, and the world never really cares about you for very long. And even when they do, it's only your image the world knows. It's very superficial and shallow. This is the deeply depressing, dehumanizing realization that celebrities go through. They will get stalked and used. They will, sooner or later, get criticized and bullied for the whole world to see, just as Gemma did. Eventually they are all discarded and mostly forgotten. Most end up feeling very isolated, bitter and sucked dry.

I studied fashion during that time and she was my favourite model. I always wondered why she just disappeared. While she went off grid with and ED, most of the girls on my course including myself were suffering too. That world wasn’t just toxic on the inside. @haticesaretemel9937
@haticesaretemel9937 Год назад
It must have been brutal for her. Many models have been to similar places, but I think Gemma's story is striking because she rose very easily and fell from the highest very fast. Then again, she made millions during the process, and she lost a position she didn't do much to earn. The worst part is that the industry had been pushing the same standards to all women, body-shaming, dictating unrealistic beauty standards, and demonising other body types. Whilst being part of it, she benefited from and became a part of its perpetuation. I sympathise with her but I sympathise with fat-shamed teenage girls, or young women who envied her, much more. As a plus-size person myself, I was mocked and critised when I was no more than 8 and had to gain that maturity she got after everything when I was 15. But i sincerely believe she is a nice enough person to understand my point as well and it's the most important thing with her.
@THEMODELGENE
@THEMODELGENE Год назад
I think the biggest difference in her situation was the tabloid attention: it wasn't just losing jobs, but being ridiculed on the cover of magazines, especially after the death of Heath Ledger. She spoke about struggling with disordered eating even before she started modeling so that period really must have felt like her whole world was falling down around her. I hope for progress in the fashion industry, but there are too many monsters in positions of power to see actionable change, and an army of sycophants who feel empowered by the same practices.
@haticesaretemel9937
@haticesaretemel9937 Год назад
@@THEMODELGENE been thinking about this aspect too, really. Losing her boyfriend must have been completely devastating even without the criticism and I think it tell more about other people's cruelty and entitlement than what she felt. Apart from sympathising with that kind of depression, I stand by my point though. Yes, there are toxic people who are abusing their position and she was privileged enough to benefit from it. Then it bit her back. I'm not saying it didn't hurt. I'm saying it bit others more.Same attention was on Adele, Melissa McCarthy, Ashley Graham as well and they had to live with it. Plus, mockery of overweight people was also on pretty much everyday's TV. Plus, she didn't actually got fat, she just lost her extra thin physique.

Nobody can say what beautiful is or size. The most depressing thing about the model industry is the exclusion and it shows in even the small things, like how they are encouraged to have a scowl on their face all the time.
