As a child my dad played this for us an I'd throw on my hat an grab my stick an we would sing an dance. My dad died a couple years back an when i listen to these tracks they brings back so many memories. Those were golden day
Love this song! I am 76 and love to hear the oldies! I’ve seen the Beatles, Elvis, the BeeGee’s and others. What a treat to still be able to listen to all these guys!
Early 1962 smash-hit record on which one can hear the R&B vocal harmony style (aka doo-wop) turning into smooth Chicago soul right before our ears. It was the first record I ever bought (1/27/62), and it went on to become a massive R&B/pop-rock crossover hit, both in Chicago and nationally: #1 R&B and pop for five weeks / #2 R&B hit of 1962, #4 pop hit of 1962 (in Cash Box and Music Vendor). Grammy Hall of Fame record.
Saturday morning January 27, 1962: I (as a 12-year-old) was set on making my first record purchase, one 45 single being all I could afford. It turned into the Battle of the Genes for me. I had intended to get the current #1 record in Chicago, "Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney, but when I noticed that Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" was debuting that day at #27 on the WLS Top 40 Silver Dollar survey and that the store had it, I just couldn't resist the newer, shinier object. The very next week Pitney lost a face-off with Gary (U.S.) Bonds' "Dear Lady Twist" and then I was out of money for a while. I never did get "Town Without Pity," which was a real pity for Pitney.
fantastic song this "Duke of Earl" ..fantastic singer Gene Chandler .. there is something in his voice ' not of this earth " .. May be one of the best singer in the soul music .
Good afternoon my friends I can't remember if Gene is still alive today But i still listening to this music in July of 2024 Those years ago was best music come out of that era of music to
I was around nine years old when this song was a hit, and I remember being fascinated by it. Chandler was of course fantastic, but I thought the background vocals were the coolest thing I’d ever heard. This was pre Beatles, and of course when they came along everything changed...but this is a reminder that there was great music happening before the Beatles came along.
Du, du, du, became Duke and Earl was part of the group, so Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl, duke, duke - pure genius, and thanks for such a wonderful song, all these years, still rings 1962, how do you do?
I'm 10 years older than you and I love this song and all of the oldies but a lot of people do find it weird that I even know this stuff but it's because my father was born the same year as this artist so my father grew up on this stuff and played it constantly when I was younger.
It's not that you're weird... it's that most people are ignorant of music history and have poor taste, in general. Never listen to music that you don't enjoy, and never stop listening to music that you love. Don't let stupid people influence you.
The only woman I ever loved departed this world years ago and now my flame is burning lower and will be extinguished soon. I am still inspired by this song from our childhood that my love will be waiting for me when I am ready to join her in Paradise.
I'm 67 born in 1955 and this is one of the first songs that I ever heard. The first song I recall hearing was by Bobby Blue bland. Call on me. I was just a boy but I can remember these songs and they sound just as good today
I remember going to the show with my big sister to see the Duke of Earl on some moving and she was just screaming and all over the floor and I was cracking up
In 1962, I was only five years old but I love to listen to this song at 66 years old. I look at the fine young women in this video, all natural and no tattoos. Women were women back then.
