Ace was probably drunk in most of these "interviews" but he was actually a pretty coherent alcoholic. He was super chill and funny and just came off as a really nice person.
FightWorldSlavery bob only played on alive 2 on the couple recordings on the record ace has a song on that record he played bass on and the guitar... every song ace had vocals on (the dynasty and unmasked album) ace played the bass and lead on the recording
I think looking at their outfits over the years the ones from around the Dynasty album era were the best by a long mile. Ace's is the best by a long mile but I liked Gene's red cape and of course Eric's fox fur (sorry animal lovers).
I like Tommy's playing , But I Don't think he's tall enough to pull it off the proper visual like ACE did. With this costume anyway. It's like Ace's half crocked stagger is part of the visual display. And that's rock and roll!!
Ace is just the coolest. His laugh is so great, and you can tell, Ace is real. No ego, just having fun, talking like a regular guy. Gene was actually better than normal here, but still cringeworthy. Whey can't he just chill and have some fun without putting up a front? Ace, you are the man. Rock on!
Ace was so genuine and real. The guy truly wants to just shoot the breeze with the host, and wish him a happy birthday like a regular Joe. Gene however wants to promote the band, flash his tongue like the audience was 16y/o fans, and basically promote. Day and night appeal. God bless ya Ace, you're a rare breed.
Chris Mortlock Thats total nonsense. Read Paul's book. Gene does very little in promoting the band. They have a dept of people who handle the promotion and all Paul and Gene do is say.. "Yes.. No.. YES... NO.. He's no marketing genius.
Chris Mortlock Whoop de doo!!. People think he's some marketing genius. He isn't. Even Paul says that. He simply says yes or no to marketing ideas that a team of people work on.
If you listen closely at 4:32 Ace says "Oh steal the show go ahead" ..."go ahead steal the show" under his breath when Gene starts sitting by in the crowd.
@@drstupid4366 We dont hate him. But hes sort of KISS' signature member, hes the one people think of. And when he doesnt get that attention hes used to getting he gets pretty pissed off. And thats something i dislike
+Electricneon Agreed! As someone who went to school in The Bronx myself, it was a trip hearing Ace and Don talk about their old neigborhood and going to Dewitt Clinton HS.
+Electricneon gene on an ego tripped young girl fantasy and Ace making a new friend from his hometown. as lisa lampanelli once said...........ummmm...........nice tongue, gene.
he's the most down to earth per se, but the fame did get to his head, with $15, 000 a night coke binges, thinking he didn't need to practice or showup amongst other consequences of fame. thinking he's above the law. fame got to his head, and it cost him plenty.
@Snarick Klash oh I'm aware of Gene' star power & magnetism. What I meant was Ace seemed more of a regular guy while Gene was the unapproachable superstar (unless you were a really hot babe.) Just my perception at the time.
Everyone in the comments section say how Ace was the coolest member yet it's well known that Eric was one of the sweetest, kindest people you would ever meet and genuinely loved the fans! How sad!!!!
I've always heard only good things about Eric, and although nothing will quite compare to the original lineup, if Peter had to leave, there was no one better to replace him than Eric.
Yea! People saying they miss this Ace and such have me like you miss a man who was drunk and high out of his mind? Struggling with addiction? I love Ace now
He went to my high school, I don’t believe it!!! You can just tell Ace was genuinely excited. I just saw my first kiss concert on Friday, so I started looking at old interviews. For some reason I was drawn in by Ace and Peter. They just seem down to earth and the fame never went to their head. Just seem like really cool dudes who would have a beer with you and find time to hangout with you. I really wish, I could of seen them with all the original members
Just love the bonding between Ace & Don, so genuine and pleasantly surprised. Sure Gene was "working the room", but at 14yrs old, that's what we wanted to see. The majority of the KISS fanbase in Australia was my age too so unlike now as a middle age man, I couldn't care if Don went to the same high school, just the sight of them on screen messing around was enough!
I don't know why I'm so obsessed with KISS but they fascinate me to no end! Gene Simmons, Love him or Hate him, you can't deny him!! He is a Rock & Roll Star!!! I think He's Great!!
An absolute CLASSIC Aussie television moment. Love Gene's makeup in this video. It looked so much better than it did in '76-'79. Ace Frehley is awesome in this clip... he is so down to earth and it really appears like he wanted to hang out with Don after the show... especially since they had so much in common. One of my favorite interviews!
I think Ace was always able to make Gene laugh even if Gene didn't want to and wanted to play Mr. Serious. 5:15
Went to the KISS "End of the Road Tour" - my 11th show. Took my daughter. Great show. Took my son to the Ace Frehley concert two months earlier - met the bands, got autographs, pictures, etc, etc, etc etc. Ace doesn't possess the arrogance of Gene and Paul. I am a fan of all things KISS, but Ace is something different and something special
I was 12 and this surprise visit was a real treat for Oz Kiss fans. At the time I never noticed how Gene changed the focus when Ace struck it off with Don Lane. The camera missed the really important and real bond between Ace and Don. All we see is Gene stealing the scene with his usual BS. As we now know thats how he works, thats why Ace left the control freaks who still play Kiss. A sad fact is Kiss without Ace is NOT Kiss. Gene and Paul prefer it like that.
Ace [Space Ace] Frehley is Kiss, whenever he strungs a cord on his Gibson Les Paul, he sounds like Kiss, every time you hear his playing you know exactly who it is.
Don Lane & Ace are from my neighborhood. I live about 4 to 5 blocks away from where Ace use to live and my parents owned a Hardware Store on Bedford Park Blvd. It's cool to know these things now.
Hey, that's so cool! I've never even been to NY (I'm from Finland) but ever since I got into Ace (and KISS but it all happened because of Ace and he comes first, always) I have also become very interested in The Bronx and its history as in his book he talks a lot about his time there as a young kid growing up. I love how he mentions Poe Park in his chat with Don Lane, haha. I know Ace grew up on the corner of E201 and Marion Av. Just in case you haven't seen it, there is actually a great old documentary on RU-vid about a block and its community which is located very near to your and Ace's neighborhood in Bedford Park, around E194th st and Briggs Av. The doc is called Our Block and it's from the early 80s. Look it up if you are interested! For once footage on TV about The Bronx that's NOT about the South Bronx... =)
I live in Gene's old neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens. Moved here in 1974 just as KISS were taking off. I went to the same high school and junior high school as he did but about a decade later. Had a friend whose older sister claimed she graduated with him in 1968. Our high school library had a collection of yearbooks from each year of the school's existence and I remember picking out the 1968 edition to see if Gene was in it and sure enough, there he was (as Gene Klein) in all his repulsive glory lol. This was about 1979, before his unmasking, so it was definitely NOT what I expected to see lol. The photo is now online for anyone who hasn't already seen it.
@@Daniamal1973 Gene's real name wasn't Klein. Or even Gene. He was born Chaim Witz. One of my childhood friends here in Brooklyn knew Gene when he was calling himself Gene Klein.
@@Fritha71 i know about it. I use to live on E. 202nd Street near the Grand Concourse. My parents business is on Bedford Park Blvd between Decatur Ave & Webster Ave. Ace lived one block away from my best friend's former Apartment.
The dynamics of this appearance as always is the interesting thing...just as ace and don start to hit it off talking about the Bronx, gene does his shtick to make sure he's the center of attention
I remember watching this live but on black and white tv as a young man. This is first time I have seen this in colour. I wasn't a KISS fan. I was a big AC/DC fan instead. But they were big in Australia back then. No one was taller than Don Lane.
wow, same high school, those guys would have got hammered together after the show. Don Lane was a great great tv talent, he took the 'big fish in a small pond' route by happily being australian 70's tv version of Johnny Carson.
Man, I remember watching that live when I was a kid (9yrs old). I wasn't allowed to go to the concert so seeing this was awesome at the time. Great to see that again. Thanks for posting
Ace was and always has been the coolest member of Kiss. I know he has his flaws just like anybody else but out of everyone that's ever been associated with that band, he has the strongest combination of musical talent and likable personality. No hate for Gene or Paul but I would never go see Kiss live without Ace Frehley playing lead.
It's clear that Ace is actually there to wish the guy a happy birthday. Gene, however, is only interested in having the camera on him at all times and promoting himself.
Ace may have had his well-documented issues, but he brought so much to KISS that all of Gene and Paul's stock answers never, ever could. Thanks for posting this...never saw it before! My fave interview is still the classic Tom Snyder interview where Ace stole the show, but this one has to be my second fave. Ace and Don had a fantastic chemistry and exchange. It was Don Lane's BIRTHDAY and all Gene wants to do is stick out his tongue and have a "look at me" attitude. Meanwhile, Ace is asking Don Lane real questions and asking him where he grew up, and just human stuff. WOW...Ace steals the show without trying to. He's just real. Gene on the other hand...laughable in all the wrong ways. lol
Ace and the host experience the very trippy event of discovering that they went to the same high school in the Bronx although they are in Australia, and Gene reacts by drawing attention to himself.
I think Don noticed that Gene was trying to steal Asus Thunder. That's when he said was you trying to get the girl's number and the girl was like 5 years old. Sarcasm at its best.
Gene straight up pulls/shoves Ace out of the way at 4:33 and Ace just goes along with it. Wonder if that happened often?
Ace is always the best and yeah Ace always hit it off with people and of course Gene has to try and steal the focus away. Ace forever. Thank you for the upload!
