I really doubt that Geddy didn't know what a 145 progression was. It's really just a blues progression which most guitar and bass players learn in their first or second year of training. Sounds like a grandpa story Gene is telling.

@@attilathehun0 Another killer background bass line is in The Lemon Song by Zep. IMHO, and it’s no secret, John Paul Jones was the man who held that band together. I’m with you though, it’s all about Riffs, Solos and Lyrics for me. I’ve been In and Out of bands for almost 40 years now, and as a vocalist, I take my cues from 70% guitar 25% drums and 5% bass on average.

He might have explained the blues scale to him at that time. Remember Gene had been around a couple tour/album cycles by then and Rush was fresh off the boat. However Gene stopped getting better as a musician by the end of the 70’s but Geddy and Alex never stopped improving their skills and knowledge

In comparison Geddy(he and I have the same birthday btw) is completely on a whole other level playing wise in relation to Gene. But I do with you that Gene’s playing is underrated, he does play a lot of walking bass lines while also doing vocals, and pretty much never see him looking at the fretboard. And he has laid down some very good bass lines, ‘Goin’ Blind’ being a very good example. As far his whole story goes with how he says it happened?, well that’s Gene.

Geddy Lee was and is cool but his playing didn't make me wanna learn to play bass. Gene's playing did. Also, guys who say "Gene was a good bass player in the 70s", try to play the 80s songs KISS played back then. I assure you Gene's parts weren't simple or dull at all. Even if you're an advanced level bass player you'll struggle with most of what he played back then. And then, when you manage to play his parts, I'd ask you to stand f*cking up and try to play them while just walking, let alone jumping and going all crazy as Gene did. I'll never forget the time when another i-can-read-notes jerk told me Gene was the worst bass player ever and I just asked him to play Gene's original part of "Rock And Roll All Nite" and he just couldn't :) Whahaha, as*hole.

From what I understand, Gene wasn't playing most of the bass recordings in the 80s. It was Paul or a session player. Gene was busy on his acting career.

@@janicefrantz1831 That's true but you can hear his playing live on various videos. He was and is quite a fast and melodic bass player. I don't think that many bass players can play his parts and move at the same time. Gene was flying across the stage and rarely even watched his neck, and his fingers lived their own lives :)

You know how not every gtr or bass player don't know everything and sometimes terms are lost in translation. Geddy turned out to be one of the finest bass players ever, but he might not have known what Simmons was meaning, but then once it's shown they both get on the same page easy. I can't count how many gtr players I know who have no idea about music theory or what 1,4,5 means. They can't tell you or show you B Major from B Minor. I don't doubt for one minute Gene at that time could show Geddy something Geddy didn't know yet, you'd be surprised. Gene is a bragger and full of shit a lot of times, but he just might have known something Geddy didn't know yet. It happens. :)
