In this video you’ll see how a whole house automatic transfer switch is installed. See how the wiring from the existing 200A Main Breaker panel gets rewired and grounded properly when a generator is connected to the electrical system. This is part one so come back shortly to see how the generator gets wired and is installed.
Permits and Inspections are required for this work. Check with your local building department and utility company before doing anything you see in this video. Electrical work is not a hobby.

We have used the ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I just completed my 5th install of a Generac Standby generator. First was in 2005, a Guardian Plus 15kw, right after Hurricane Rita hit us. I actually installed it temporarily at one location and then at its permanent location. Since then I have installed 3 of the newer 22kw Guardians with the whole house switch. They are not difficult to install if you have a very good understanding of residential electric service, the NEC parts that apply and what your local utility co. likes. The last two included complete service replacement with the Generator install. I have pulled the permits and been Green Tagged every time without issue.

Where I live a Homeowner can pull a permit and do work to their own property. You will have to ask in your town/county. My FIL had a plumber come run a gas line last week for a stove and he commented on my install... He said its the best he's seen, even better than the Gen Dealers. Your elec co. should have a service diagram showing what they want/require. Get that so they are satisfied, as they are the last to check your work before connecting. Be aware of the bonding jumper inside the transfer switch, as that is now the First Panel! You will un-bond the original service panel to separate your Neutrals and Ground and possibly have to move wires to each bar for correct connections. Your original panel may have just a screw to remove to separate or a Jumper. If you don't have separate n/g bus bars, you will have to add one. Just fully understand the bonding at the first panel and the separation of all neutral and grounds downstream of that!!!! @@camilo8cheryl

Also do you also provide maintenance for the generator. Would like to learn your opinion on that.

The generator comes as a package with the transfer switch. So it with the labor and all the other materials included anywhere from $12,000.00-$17,000.00. Permits are normally a line item that are not included because each town has different rates for permits.

Those are the grounding electrode conductors and they’re relocated to the ATS because it becomes the main disconnect. All bonding is done in the main disconnect.

Great work. I’m not an electrician but I’ve learned quite a bit/done my own inspected electrical work. Recently I upgraded my service from 100 to 200 amps. The inspector did not make me put in an outside disconnect as I did not move or change the meter (luckily the underground service and meter was rated for 200 amps already). My question for you is if I installed an outside transfer switch, would this also act as a means of disconnect as stated in the 2020 code? Thanks, I appreciate it.

A quick question, I had a Generac 16KW whole house generator from 2008-2015 that broke. What I would like to do is use the Generac transfer switch Attached to my home and still wired up, to supply power from a tri-fuel Firman generator. Will it shut down the grid power still when electricity is off, or will I need to somehow shut down the grid power manually while the generator runs. Thank you for your help.

@godelrt

Hi Ron, So both of the grounding electrode conductors from the water pipe and from ground rods need to be taken out of what was a main panel and now they need to go into the ATS which is the first disconnect ? They can’t just stay in the old panel? And these here are #4 copper for the 200amp service? Then you run a new #4 copper ground from the ATS to now a sub panel. Did I get that right? Thanks a lot for great videos!
@electricalron
@electricalron Год назад
Yes, the water pipe and ground bars are called grounding electrode conductors. Both of them get relocated to the automatic transfer switch since it becomes the new main disconnect. The #4 copper from the transfer switch to the distribution panel is known as the equipment grounding conductor and is sized for 200 amps.

Looks like a Generac RTSY200A3, but this is a 200 amp automatic transfer switch (ATS). I'm not sure you need a 200 amp xfer switch for 6.5kw. You could probably get by with a 100 amp.
@rupe53
@rupe53 Год назад
@@im2yys4u81 ... he would need a switch rated for whatever the grid feed is. IOW, 200 amp service will require a 200 amp TS. The odd thing about the Generac switch is there's no built-in logic. There's a 12 volt coil / relay that needs external signaling to provide transfer to standby power. In his case it looks as if solar is the primary so might be reversed from normal. An Asco switch (higher cost) has logic built in so will follow the power. Not sure what he would use to signal transfer in either case.
