General Method of Extraction and Isolation of Resin (HINDI) By Sufipharm
RESIN EXTRACTION
Complex amorphous product which on heating first gets softened & then melts. Insoluble in most polar & non polar solvent, but dissolves in alcohol, solvent ether, benzene & CHCl3.
General method of extraction of resin
1. By extraction with alcohol and precipitation with water (e.g. Jalap, podophyllum)
a. Powdered crude drug extracted with alcohol and filter.
b. Filtrate means Alcoholic extract is concentrated
c. Add large proportion of acidulated water to concentrated alcoholic extract.
d. Resin precipitated get collected by filtration or centrifugation
e. Wash the Precipitate several times with water and dried
2. By collecting the fossil resin
3. By making injury or incision on specific plant part (Benzoin, Balsam, Asafoetida, Myrrh)
4. By processing encrustation (e.g. Shellac)
5. By heating the plant part (Gauaicum)
6. By distillation for separation of volatile oil (Colophony)
