With transmission in neutral or park, the torque converter shell and turbine spin freely in unison, with no relative motion at the bearing, once the moment of inertia of the front clutch drum is overcome and spins with it. When transmission is placed in gear (forward or reverse), the forward clutch is applied and the turbine is held stationary until the vehicle is allowed to move. A stationary input shaft holds the turbine creating relative motion at the bearing between the turbine and the impeller (shell). A bad bearing will make noise with forward clutch applied and vehicle stationary. Will quiet down as vehicle speed increases and impeller and turbine speeds begin to match.
It took me way to long to finally find a video explaining what I've just started to experience this week, Mainly how it would only make that whine as reverse or park or stopping at a light. Mine actually started as a rattle but that seemed to have faded to this whine rather quickly, Either way tranny fluid service and a new torque converter in my immediate future.
My 2006 trailblazer is showing signs of torque problems/I just dropped the transmission pan replace A&B solenoids hoping is clears up the trouble. It was only shifting to 1st gear. It is shifting a lot better. Thanks for the info!!!👍
Sir, your video solve my Honda jazz 2015 whine noise, thanks a lot, my car whine noise started 1 month ago. When in drive n reverse whine after 40 the noise faded, same as your video truck whine noise.
@@johnandeddie Sir, here Penang Malaysia, Honda don't have the one way bearing clutch replacement, i searching google only can find it in USA, does Honda precision parts in Mexico plant, selling out the transmission parts into USA? Where can i get the original Honda one way bearing clutch? After open up the transmission, just replace the one way bearing or together with the stator?
What happens if the bearings go completely out? My 95 C1500 did this and had a grinding sensation shifting from 1st to 2nd. Now it won't move in any gear at all. Transmission never had any problems before that.
my 04 trailblazer 4x4 was making that exact noise, getting worse over the summer. pulled away from a crosswalk the other day, and the gear slipped. rpms rev up but there was no acceleration. accompanied by loud clanking sound in P D and R, like something getting tossed around in the transmission. turn off car, start up, over and over and eventually gets into gear fine and was able to drive it home. just a bad torque converter? or maybe also transfer case? scanner reads everything in transmission is fine. goes into every gear. thoughts please?
I know this video is kind of old but I have a GM that's making that same exact sound and it will go in gear and drive as long as it's making that sound but when it quits making that sound you ain't going nowhere in any gear you can shut it down start it back up and it will repeat the process all over again would that also be the converter or could it be a pump?
I noticed this whine about 6 months ago during the winter. I thought it was a pulley bearing for one of the drive accessories. Wrong! Then whining got worse & now I'm probably gonna get rid of the car. I mostly blame myself. I knew the transmission was slipping in first but didn't do anything. The car had 170,000 miles & I waited too long. Live and learn I guess. 2011 Chevy Impala
I have a 2014 Camaro, and it makes that same noise while in all the gears, and while in park, and hitting the accelerator. You could still hear it . Could it still just be the stator support bearinpg?
My trans just started doing this while on a road trip. I noticed the truck started having a missfire but no light came on. After exiting the freeway and lowering the window i could hear it. Mine also whines in park and the fluid is full. How long do you think i have before it gets to be undrivable. I have about a 200 mile trip home where i can most likely fix it myself
I’m having that same sound with my 07 chevrolet Colorado. I have no idea what’s wrong with it. It hasn’t given any signs that the transmission or the torque converter was bad. But I was going down the road and it randomly just slipped gear and wouldn’t accelerate anymore. It won’t take any gears whatsoever but it is making the squealing noise. Is it the tranny or the converter?
I have same exact whine but when going steady 40-60mph. Its silent when not moving and noise comes and goes. Is this something that will fail very soon? Noise is exactly same.
How long will a 4l60e go with a whiny torque converter? Is that what causes the butterfly lugging/miss type action when it lugs low RPM's before tranny does the downshifting to the next lower gear?
My 99 ford explorer has done that for the last 120k miles. A year ago it just started having problems getting into 3rd but once it's in it's fine. I've got 280k on the dash and still drive it 30 miles a day. It leaks fluid and for the last 4 years I've replaced it with lucas stop slip and I swear its been my saving grace.
Went to look at a 1994 c10 blazer that had this Same sound. When in drive and while moving. I didn't get it cause i wanted to do research on this sound. This most definitely is it. Is it worth it?
At 2k rpm my 04 Yukon 5.3L with 4L60e makes a sound on the passenger side that sounds like exactly like hhhhhuuuueeey!! Then stops as i go to 3k Rpm. Also has kind of a diesiel sounding rattle on startup that goes away after it warms up a bit but performs like crap when ambient air temp is above 90 degrees..does this sound like failing torque converter?
Bad stator bearings make noise like in video. Raise up vehicle and put in gear not holding brakes and see if vehicle stalls. If ok then apply brakes. If engine stalls, possible bad torque convertor
I have an Acura TSX with that converter whine. I hate going through drive throughs because it's really noticeable when I'm stopped. It's been like that for several years. The gears don't slip and there's no shudder. What are the consequences of not changing it?
i’ve got a 13 silverado still have all gears. no slip or stutter just a whine. whines on acceleration and deceleration but little to no noise at a stop light. i’ve been thinking it’s the transmission oil pump but your video sounds identical to the noise i hear. faster i go the quieter the noise gets. engine probably drowns it out though. thoughts?
If it is the bearing shown in video the whining noise fades out completely when the vehicle starts to move in drive. It may come back for a second or two on the upshifts. Try a trans service first.
Sir, my honda fit 2015, cvt gear box torque converter bearing whining noise on and off, what the problem with this situation? Or is other part whining noise?
A internal transmission problem can cause the filter to restrict fluid flow and make a whining noise. If that is the case you would replace the transmission
Finally found it, this is the exact same noise I got aswell. However it is only on startup, once I start driving it goes away soon. On hot summer days that is usually less than 10 seconds, now in the winter more like 1-2 minutes. After that its completely gone until I park it again for a long while. Could it be that the trans filter is clogged and once the ATF heats up it passes through, thus eliminating the noise?
Alright I fixed my issue. In the Turbo 400 the filter is supposed to be hanging somewhat loose in the pan, but the previous owner had used washers to tighten the filter down. That way it sat a little higher in the pan and was pulling air until the oil heated up and expanded. Took the washers out, problem is gone
Getting a noise like this on an A727, only makes the noise on a cold start and the RPM's slightly raised to get the car to move, Torque converter bleed down? worn converter? i usually let the engine moderately warmed up before driving, but in case i need to get somewhere in a timely fashion, the noise will come back and lose and forward gears & reverse.
@@johnandeddie already done that few years back, the car being a classic, doesn't get driven much so the fluid doesn't really go bad. I can just assume a worn trans and a rebuild is in my near future.
Check to make sure noise is coming from trans and not the front of engine like a belt tensioner, idler pulley, alternator, etc. If noise coming from trans, may be a restriction trans filter due to possible internal problem.
Hi I've been having that whining/whirring noise upon accelerating it has been getting worse over time and yes it goes away after certain MPH. Could this be the cause that my transmission slips and I don't feel that much low end torque anymore? It also has a shudder at higher RPMs. I just replaced transmission fluid along with the transmission speed sensor that is inside, car feels better but I can still hear the whining noise upon accelerating and like it still needs more of the torque it used to have.
@@johnandeddie Thank you for your response I had dealer replace transmission and it feels better but I feel like ECU is still trying to adjust to it, about how many miles does it take to fully adjust as it still slips at higher mph??
Change trans filter, also try removing serpentine belt and start vehicle to confirm any problem with pulleys and/or components on the front of the engine
@@johnandeddie will do it wines in park and goes away when I shift into gear but then comes back after a bit. Sometimes it takes a while to actually engage when I shift into drive.
