Here is what happens when I go to smoke a pipe. First I look at my collection and see which one I want to smoke according to the type of tobacco I want to smoke.. I pick the pipe up and take in my hand and rub the whole outside of the pipe. Then I look through my tobaccos and see what tobacco I want. If I have chosen a latakia pipe, I look through those tobaccos and choose one. Then I get my lighter and tamper and my tobacco plate. Then I get a pipe cleaner and run it a few times through the pipe. I then loose fill the pipe and pack lightly, then loose fill the pipe and pack it slightly firmer, then I put enough tobacco on my pipe to build a cone and then take my thumb and slowly press till it is even on the top of the pipe and then twist the pipe on my thumb three times. That locks the tobacco in and I then light it and then wait for it to go out. Then I tamp it with the weight of the tamper and light it again, lighting the entire top of the tobacco. Then I sit back, take a drink of coffee and enjoy my pipe.
thanks Muttnchop for teaching me everything Ive learned so far about Pipe smoking. I love "real" people who dont try to be anything they are not, and your frankness and honesty has been helpful and entertaining. I have watched a lot of your vids in the past two months! The breath technique has been most beneficial! I have given up the occasional expensive(and good) cigar for this and I have enjoyed it immensely. Im saving some pennies and dimes for a good estates pipe or two and I will work on something nice for the future. It's on to your "what pipe is right for you" vids. I want to wish YOU and your family happy piping!
i think i might understand this now. i kept focusing on the "mouthwash" comparison and was totally lost. thank you MC for all youve done for this community.
Great points about cigarette smoking. When I did (long ago), I couldn't go for a day without feeling like garbage. Whereas with pipe smoking, I could have 2 - 5 bowls in a weekend and then stop for the rest of the week. No cravings, no physical symptoms: nothing. Truly a great a thing.
Hey Wargamer. At that time in my life (18 years old or so. I am now 28) I was also chewing tobacco, as well as smoking and I started feeling more and more like a slave to it all (truly a horrible feeling where you want to stop, but you can't because of the physical symptoms). So I decided to quit completely by sealing myself in the house for three days. I didn't use any of that replacement therapy business. I stopped for a good long while, then every once (couple times over the years) and a while I would have one, but I could never go back to it and finally had no desire to go back to the disgusting things. That being said, I pipe in moderation (1 to 4 bowls a week, if that) and find its important to take breaks from it as well. After saying all of that, I am truly convinced it is the chemicals and composition of retail cigarettes that is makes it so extremely addictive. Cultivating your willpower into iron will help you do any overcome just about anything. One must commit themselves fully to the task to achieve success. I hope this was somewhat helpful.
@@brettbricker1810 Agreed. Nicotine is addictive but all the chemicals in modern cigarettes are nasty. I quit by vaping and the first little bit I was consuming about twice the amount of nicotine just to try and fill the void of all the other chemicals.
Your videos are amazing they have made my foray into pipe smoking last. Please start making videos again we all need you amazing incites into pipe smoking and world view. My grandfather when growing up always smoked a pipe when we visited with my dad from 10 yo on they would let me sit and hear the amazing storys and life lessons. And in my grandfather absence this has been the best way for me to reconnect to his memory and honor him. Thank you
I've watched this and the other videos by Muttnchop on this subject and just had my first bowl ever and in a new pipe (my first pipe) and it worked out amazingly well. Very appreciative! Happy piping!
Almost a year to the day of this gentlemans last video, I stumble on his channel and learn so much for my upcoming pipe smoking journey. He really does have amazing tips and information, and is just a nice presence to learn from. Thank you MuttnChopPiper, you've helped me and my lady learn a lot about what to look for and what to do.
You have helped me a great deal in calming down my tongue bite, and focus on the breathing. Making me slow down and enjoy this wonderful hobby even more. Thank you Muttnchop.
Very Informative! I love your videos Muttnchop Piper, you have been one hell of a teacher/mentor. You have thought me most of the things I know about the hobby and unfortunately, contributed to my TAD at the same time. In my book, you're one of the reasons why the YTPC is so awesome and I truly appreciate the time you put into making your videos. Thank you so much once again for taking the time to post quality content every Sunday. Cheers from Canada!
All of my life I wanted to smoke a pipe. No one in my immediate family smoked. I was grateful for this for I was horribly allergic to tobacco. During those years everyone smoked everywhere and I was a sick kid. Asthma, Allergy shots, Respiratory treatments daily for 3 years, etc. This led to me become a Registered Nurse as an adult. Now I am a retired 62 year old, and for the past 6 months, about x2 per week I have been learning to smoke a pipe with you. Still allergic to tobacco, but thanks to Nasalcrom and better antihistamines, I haven't had a sinus infection or asthmatic attack yet. (But I did get 2nd-3rd degree tongue bite once; 3 weeks to get over it.) I must smoke up wind from the smoke out doors, never blow smoke out my nose, and be sure to use the meds; but it's been kind of fun learning a "bad" habit from a person who seems to be a very nice family man. The only other thing I have noticed is, even though this has only been a couple of times a week for 6 months, and I have always brushed my teeth 2-3 times daily with no cavities, my gums have started feeling weird and receding alittle. I only mentioned this because you also have mentioned having oral difficulties in the past. Enjoyed all your videos.
I do the same but with a little difference which i think is impotant. When i inhale through my nose i cover the pipe straw with my tongue and when i exhale through my nose i remove my tongue from the straw. I do that because i don't want any smoke to get into my lungs or throught while smoking. Whenever i want to smoke i just suck the pipe like a regular pipe smoking. Thank you for your videos. They are amazing
Muttonchop, your videos are excellent and taught me how to smoke a pipe. Before stumbling upon them, I had issues with tongue bite and keeping my pipe lit. You’re a great teacher. Hope to see more videos from you in the future.
Hi. I was very fortunate to be given 3 Peterson briars and a meerschaum pipe by a lovely old gentleman recently. He had given up the pipe 15 years ago and he was very elderly and frail. I cleaned the briars and they were very dull so I treated them with some Teak oil, and they came up lovely. My late dad used to smoke a pipe when I was young, I’m 54 now, and I am really thinking of taking up the pipe. 👍🇬🇧
I just so happened here on your channel, I inherited grandpas pipe a few years ago and decided to smoke it last night and didn’t know what the hell I was doing, that being said I actually found myself enjoying it as I was fishing off the dock behind my house. I can definitely see why one would take this up for passing time or to relax. Thanks for all the info you put out it’s a pleasure learning new stuff like this the average joe never experienced
Thank you for this tutorial. I just started smoking today. I was burning the tobacco up too quick and did not understand anything about a breathing technique. Breathing technique you covered helps unlock that flavor of tobacco perfectly and makes it last for a long time. My uncle (70+ year pipe smoker) let me have a pipe out of his collection today. My very first pipe is a Duke Dr Grabow made from imported Briar. I went from being a wet smoker to a dry smoker and having a burnt tongue to actually tasting the Tobacco within minutes of watching this video. This video really put my tobacco smoking experience as you said "through the stratosphere." Thank you kindly, sir. Happy piping!
I've been pipe smoking for a while now and tried that method before I even watched this but I'm glad you explained in more detail so thanks for helping me understand.
I've been smoking for years but I really like your take on the breath method i smoke fast and hot and following this video slowed me down a lot! Your comments on cigs hit me kinda hard...I've been a pack a day for two years now and I need to quit. It's true pipe smoking isn't addictive at all but cigs are a completely different beast. Wish I had just stuck to pipes.
WargamerGunnar - I'm sorry to say, but that's why the cigarette companies target young people, hook them when their 14, 15, 16, get them addicted, and you have a life long revenue stream, just wash rinse and repeat. 😔😔😔
This method is great. This made my pipe smoking 10x better: I smoke slower, the pipe doesn’t overheat, the flavors are better, and I’m not getting the ashy flavor towards the end. And breathing out through the pipe is making a more even cake throughout the bowl. I was worried that breathing out the pipe would cause it to heat up more, but it doesn’t. Thanks again for your videos my friend!
This is the best way to smoke for flavor! Wow! Been smoking pipe since I was 18 now I'm 29 and thinking about how much more enjoyment and flavor and pure relaxation and pleasure I've missed out on in the past 11years. Changed my life. Thank you Mr. Muttnchop. Amazing. Phenomenal. Just absolutely blown away. I will be enjoying life about 10x more now. Happy piping to you sir. I think I'm going to revisit some old aromatics and see if I can taste them better. Cheers. 👍👍👍
James Herbert - you bet James, I'm glad it's working, when you revisit those Aromatics, try ones you hated, now that you can taste what your smoking, you may think different of them. 👍👍👍
Couldn't agree more. Pipes aren't about satisfying a craving, it's a time to sit down and just relax while enjoying a favorite blend. The breath method you describe came almost naturally to me. Somehow a tiny amount of air flowed through the pipe as I inhaled. I don't have any tobacco to see if I've truly got it down, but your explanation was so simple I doubt I'm doing it wrong. I went ahead and subbed. Looking forward to more videos.
Tom Sawyer - that's extraordinary, you're doing it the way the method intended you to do it, as you breathe in through your nose suction is produced in your mouth naturally drawing some smoke from the pipe. Most people don't get that right away, great job. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper, I'm relatively new to pipe smoking and am truly envious of your pipe collection. I don't have a shop locally so I had to order my first few pipes online. My first pipe ever was a clay pipe I bought while on vacation in Florida. I was 16 at the time, to young to legally smoke, but that's where it all began for me. I can't wait for my Missouri Meerschaum cobs to come in with my first few blends.
Mr Piper: Thank you so much for your enlightening videos. I'm trying to pick up pipe smoking and I know that it should be relaxing but I realized, thanks to your videos, that I'm doing all wrong. I'm going to start anew and use the Breath method. It makes all the sense in the world. Happy pipin'
I have seen videos on the Breathe method and never understood it. Watched your video and finally understood what to do. Just got done smoking a bowl of Lane1q and man what a difference. I could taste the tobacco better and it burned much better. Thanks for the very informative video
Well I only just started to smoke a pipe, I'm aged nearly 50 and I thought, what the hell! Anyway, just like to thank you for your videos. It is clear you have a passion for this and your easy going and friendly style is so engaging to watch. I have just spent the best part of an hour practising this method and I have to say how enjoyable it has been. It is almost a Zen like experience, like meditation. It is a known fact that deep rhythmic breathing is good for the soul and relaxation. I sat listening to the birds in my Garden and let myself get lost watching the smoke swirl from the end of my pipe. A really nice and chilled experience. Thank You from England!
BertAtkin - I am so happy you got the technique down as soon as you did, and you are correct, the rhythm of this type of smoking is very therapeutic, it calms the soul. Thank you for your kind words my friend. 👍👍👍
Just wanted to drop in here and let you know how much you helped me. I'm a pretty knew pipe smoker who tried smoking my pipe yesterday using the breath method as described in your last breath method video. It was the best smoke I have ever had, nice and cool, flavorful, and relaxing. Thank you very much.
Dear Muttnchop You REALLY helped me out with this video A LOT !! And I emphasize “A LOT” I am a 'brand new' pipe-smoker (initially inspired by George Bruno), never ever smoked a single cigarette in my life. I occasionally enjoyed a mild cigar but that was it. Using your breath-method, man it changed my enjoyment of smoking pipes instantly. I basically smoke pipes for the celebration of the whole smoking-procedure, from packing the pipe until cleaning it sorrowfully. And of course to cherish the flavor of mild tobacco. With the breath-method, right from the scratch, I fired my pipe exactly two times: charring-light and final-light. Period. It was amazing! No relighting, not even once. I finished the whole ball (well, I packed like three quarts of it), just using your breath-method with great enjoyment. Fully appreciating the flavor of my tobacco. No relighting, just very light tamping. For you guys out there: I adapted the breath-method a bit. It just happened naturally to me and I was not indicating it. While breathing in, I did it over my nose but not zipping simultaneously on my pipe. At the end of the breathing-in process, I zipped lightly in just over the mouth/pipe. So it was like a two-step process of breathing in . For breathing out, I did it simultaneously, mostly over my nose but also using the pipe, producing a very light column of smoke going up from my pipe. It was just wonderful. Ans it worked perfectly for me. So maybe this will help some guys of you - As I said, it happened naturally to me. Maybe for you, it might happen differently. Just try find out. Great thanks to Muttnchop - I’ll stick to this channel. Great in-depth details, especially for us potential beginners (I was once) and brand new pipe-smokers !!
I just want to take a minute and let you know how much I have enjoyed your channel. I just began pipe smoking and your tutorials have really helped out. I have just finished my first four official pipe smokes and you your information on the breathing technique, I believe, really helped out. Each one of them was enjoyable although I still have a lot to learn. However I was able to not overheat the pipe and experienced no tongue bite whatsoever. Had I just grabbed a pipe and puffed away, I'm sure it would've been a disaster. Thanks for everything and I look forward to more content on your channel. Thanks
Brantley Ostwalt - Thank you my friend, you are a prime example of why I started my channel, to give people like you some direction, and instruction, I'm glad I have been able to help. 👍👍👍
Sir, with your help I just went through my first bowl with only two lights and without tongue bite. I appreciate everything you do and wanted to say thank you
Thank you. I am 49 and started pipe smoking in the last couple of weeks with no experience nor desire in other types of smoking. 1-2 bowls on a weekend is the plan. I had attempted a couple of years ago and had nasty tongue bite. This time, with the help of this method, your videos, and a knowledgeable local Tobacconist, I have had 2 successful, long-burning smokes with minimal relighting and no tongue burn. Why start a pipe this late in life? Imitation is highest form of flattery, and all of the theologians that I respect from the past smoked a pipe. it is meditative and relaxing. 😌 Take care.
BTW I am smoking a simple basket pipe to get started (actually draws very well, using 3 layered packing method again from one of your vids and others) and 1st tobacco of my choice is Lane 1Q!
Kiltman1 - sounds Ike you are well on your way through to a successful pipe smoking future my friend, and I am very happy I was a part or it. Once you get the hang of smoking a pipe, I would start looking for your next pipe acquisition, one of the great joys of the hobby. 👍👍👍
Great video. Been watching you for about a year now and i have learned alot from you. There are so many tobacco and pipe reviews out there but no one passing on ACTUAL knowledge. I guess i would classify myself as an intermediate smoker (5-6 years). Wish i would have found you sooner, learned it on my own with lots of trial and error... mostly error
LandLockedSailor69 - join the club my friend, that's what happened to me as well, so I was determined not have as many people as I could reach have to go through the same misery we went through, wish I had started it a long time ago. 👍👍👍
Thank you! I tried the method (after 50 years!) with McClelland's Arcadia in a small bent briar, and the experience was delightful. I notice that far less smoke gets near my throat, enhancing the pleasure immensely. Thanks again.
Thanks for introducing me to the Breathe technique! Just tried it and it was great. Not an expert yet but just like you said, little to no tongue bite and more flavor. Smoked McLelland's Tastemaster in a Brebbia billiard and it was like a whole new smoking experience for the better. Keep up the good work!
Chris thank you for another great video and clarifying the breathing technique you are using to do this natural process during pipe smoking ! its easy once you practice this As always thank you my friend enjoyed this tutorial. best wishes till next time 👍😀😀😀😀😀👍
You are spot on, this is how to smoke a pipe. One point for new smokers who have problems with saliva..avoid letting the lip of the stem touch your tongue or inside of your mouth while smoking, as that in itself will both make you create saliva and allow your saliva to stealthily run into your stem.
Great advice Muttnchop, I would also suggest using the belly breathing or diaphragm breathing technique while doing the breathe method of pipe smoking it goes hand in hand with inhaling your oxygen through the nose
This video was so helpful! After watching your basics video about keeping a rhythm, I went out for a smoke but was struggling with how I could maintain the sipping rhythm and keep on breathing at the same time. This breathing method is just fantastic because it allows for normal breathing while smoking.
A V - I agree, it’s so relaxing, because you don’t try to smoke the pipe, you just smoke it naturally if that makes any sense. It’s the only way I smoke my pipe. 👍👍👍
@@MuttnchopPiper I had one question that might be silly....are you supposed to sip in more than you blow back out through the pipe during the time the lips are closed? I'm assuming that's what to do since there's always extra smoke that comes out when you open your mouth after 3 or 4 breaths. Thanks!
A V - the amount you force back through the pipe is just enough that you see a small line of smoke coming from the bowl not to much that it disturbed the tobacco, but not enough where you don’t see any smoke rising from the bowl. 👍👍👍
Hey Muttnchop Piper, thanks for making this. I had no idea this method of smoking existed. Been pipe smoking about a year to a year and a half now, and only now, as with others here, do I realize how harsh I've been smoking my pipe. It's almost other-worldly to be clenching either my cob or my grabow grand duke, and reach up to the bowl and not feel it very hot. Thank you, this has, as you put it, put my pipe smoking experience into the stratosphere.
The Nordic Stag - I did a Blend club review of this blend, smoke a few bowls and head over to that video and leave a review of what you thought of it. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper, watching your videos is by itself RELAXING … thank you ... Yes indeed Pipe Smoking is a MEDITATION, a sensual meditation, and you have pointed to this very well, thanks.
i really like the breathing method - mixed with vulgar "sipping" and the very occasional retro-hale its just excellent for me. i now smoke a pipe with thicker walls that is bend down and i enjoy it better than the straight pipe i started out with because its not getting so hot and clinching is easier. glad that i found your videos Muttnchop - made me appreciate pipe smoking in a way that i was not expecting at all when my aunt gave me those old pipes from my grandfather. :)
now- after little more than a month i feel totally comfortable with pipe-smoking - thanks to your good advice. when i smoke my pipe i feel just great. the weird thing atm is that i usually am the only person that smokes pipe. so far - because i´m sure i will meet pipe-smokers eventually :D in the meantime i will promote pipe-smoking by trying to give a good example. i noted that it takes some special care to not leave a mess at the places where i smoke my pipe. i like to smoke my pipe outside at a esplanada, drinking a goiaba-juice or a beer. it took me some time until i managed to organize everything so that i now just have a small pouch with my pipe, some tobacco,pipe-tool,some pipe-cleaners and a lighter all neatly tugged together. before i carried a huge bag with the complete paraphernalia. - having just a small pouch is a plus! i have one humble question if i´m allowed to : how do you avoid to make a mess ? some advice on "smokers etiquette" so to say
hakfilm - well, the tobacco and ash is natural, so you can empty that onto the ground, most likely it will blow away, then I suggest you biting along a small plastic bag, after you clean your pipe with pipe cleaners fold them as tight as you can and put them in the plastic bag then into your pocket. 👍👍👍
Great video Chris. I hate ta say it, but, a lot of your techniques have been an enlightenment to any elderly( ok, 65) so called expert. Ya can teach an old dog new tricks ! Take care till next time. ;-)
Hey chops...I have not commented in a while. Great vid. You explain this in great detail, yet easy to understand. keep up the great content. Good health to you.
I've used the Breath method for years. To me, it gives you the very best flavor and the best way to keep your pipe lit at the same time. Like you said.....I can go a long time without smoking a pipe and it doesn't bother me a bit.
I've been using the breathe method and I like it! I simultaneously inhale through my nose while gently drawing on the pipe. Then I exhale simultaneously nose and gently through the pipe as well. I can see the smoke coming out the pipe on exhale and can judge the need for fanning the fire and then I inhale a little harder on the pipe and exhale through the mouth and nose. It's a very relaxing way to smoke. Thanks for this tip!
Jersey John - Perfect, my exact experience, another cool thing about the Breathe method is you can regulate the heat on the bowl, if you wrap your hand around the bowl and it is really hot, stop drawing altogether and just breathe in through your nose, then exhale through your nose, but send a little breathe through the stem, doing this keeps the tobacco lit, and cools the bowl, then resume normal smoking once the bowl is cooled. 👍👍👍
Smoked cigarettes for years and never got the relaxing and enjoyment like they advertise till I turned to the pipe and kicked them chem sticks to the curb. Pipe smoking you have to take your time to smoke versus a cigarette and its instant gratification. Sweet smokes amigo 😎
Really appreciated the straw in the water example, helped me to understand the breathing method better, seeing a visual aid. Certainly has eliminated tongue bite. By the way have tried Eileen's Dream at your recommendation and am loving it! keep up the great work.
Good point on the cigs. It's one of the most depressing things, hearing a friend say "I need a smoke" "I can't go much longer, could you please watch my stuff while I go for a smoke".
I finally got it down pat after some practice. Works great on my Devil Anse pipe and cools it down real quick! I don’t like to smoke the whole time like that but it’s very effective at cooling the bowl down when you get a little to warm. I like a good solid draw and a plum of smoke every now and then lol. The method cools it down real quick after a big hit 👍🏼. HOWEVER....any cob smokers out there??? The method seems to make my corn cobs get hot really quick. Blowing the smoke slightly back through just like I do on my briar Devil Anse will make my Missouri Meerschaums hotter than a firecracker really quick. Perhaps the larger airflow of the Missouri cobs make blowing back through the stem stoke the fire more than cool it. Works great on the briar though!! I may try just nose breathing only on the cob and see what happens because even the slightest blowing back through the stem seems to stoke the 🔥. Any of you cob smokers had the same occur???
Hi Muttnchop. I just tried this method using the hottest burning tobacco I have and found that I could regulate the heat of the pipe a little better. Thank you. Alex
Dear god I get flavors using this that I’ve never got. I was never a hot smoker but this will make smoking the occasional aromatic and Golden Virginia much more pleasureable. Thanks for the info.
I agree, the breath method seems to be the best way to sip the smoke without it getting overly hot. I was practicing while watching the video, and I can breath for about 4 or 5 breaths before I release and unclench the pipe. This also seems, for some reason, to allow less moisture to get in - or that's just me, I'll bet.
I have tried your method of controlling the smoke or controlling my breathing and my pipe gets so hot that it's hard to hold it in my hand. Not sure what my problem is. I would appreciate some advise.
Doesn't he inhale anyway? Because he takes in the smoke with the help of the vacuuming effect of breathing, so wouldn't he inhale some smoke inevitably?
Muttnchop Piper I just started smoking a pipe the other day and this literally brought my experience from madness to relaxing. I imagine it will only improve.
I love your videos! I learned to smoke on a clay pipe. For some reason I find clay pipes harder to stay lit, but they get little to no moisture. Can you talk about clay pipes in a future video?
MUTTNCHOP!!!!!! Excellent well done.....and well said my friend hope all is well with you take care.... mr president still wants the chop to go before congressional committees 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😀
I gave this a shot this morning. It certainly helps to reduce the temperature. I am not accustomed to breathing that much smoke in to my lungs though (even thought it is not that much). Do you use a filtered pipe or do you care? Most of my pipes are not filtered. I smoked a Petersons Limerick pipe this morning.
Loving your videos..And as a new pipe smoker been invaluable! Couple of questions.. I live in Australia and am often in South east Asia where it's hot and humid. Would a pipe with a thicker wall of the bowl help with keeping a cool smoke? Secondly trying to work my way through the different varieties of tobacco.. burleys, orientals, Virginias etc.. do you have a go to for each of those categories so I can gauge what I like and don't.. thanks again for the awesome videos 👌🏻
Jordan Purdey - yes and no. If you don't know how to control the heat, thickness of the bowl won't matter, once you heat it up, it stays hot. If you can control the heat by using the Breathe method, then yes a thicker bowl will absorb the heat better, and give you a cooler smoke. I did a video called "My Favorite Blends of 2016" where I did just that I broke down my favorites by Blend type, my favorite Virginia, my favorite Aromatic, so forth and so on. Check out that video, it should tell you all you need to know about different varieties of tobacco. 👍👍👍
Muttnchop Piper awesome thanks mate! I've been using the breath method as you've discussed in several videos... I'll keep at it and see how I go 👌🏻 perfect I'll check it out. Thanks again 👍🏻
Great video as always! Now I'm new to pipe smoking and the breath method works really well for me. Just one little thing: while clenching the pipe a lot of saliva builds up in my mouth. How do you deal with that?
SirFlausch - occasionally when that happens, I remove my pipe from my mouth, swallow then begin smoking again, but after 30 years of smoking a pipe I guess I have developed a way of swallowing saliva without knowing it, because I rarely have that problem. 👍👍👍
Great video, thank you sir. One question: when you exhale and breathe into the stem, does the air from your your breath create moisture into the tobacco? I have problem smoke to the bottom of bowl because the tobacco at the bottom is always wet.
Jason S - No, this does not happen to me, might I suggest that you make sure you're tobacco is very dry, not dry leaves crispy dry, but close, the more moisture you have in the tobacco, the more steam is produced which recondences into water at the bottom of your bowl. Plus I guess after all these years my mouth knows I'm smoking my pipe because I don't find I salivate more when I smoke, a helpful tip mabye is if you find you are salivating more then usual, remove the pipe swallow, then continue smoking. 👍👍👍
interesting...I somehow have been doing this intuitively almost from the beginning... I even thought that the little breath that went through the stem into the bowl was a mistake..! Surely it kept the ambers going and allowed for a slow smoking tempo . Only this way I could control the temperature also...Thanks for the advise!
@@MuttnchopPiper Considering that the pipe tobaccos and the pipes here, with few exceptions can be quite terrifying, smoking as cooler as you can is almost vital to keep the pleasure! You have no idea how envious we in Brazil are about the quality and variety of tobaccos you have there in USA! So lucky! Keep with the great job. Watching your videos makes for a great relaxing smoking time. Cheers!
Artur Lopes - I hate it for you guys that the selection of both pipes and tobacco is so lean, if we are not careful we will be in the same position, we have already lost a few big name tobacco companies here in the states. 😒😒😒
I'd also be interested is seeing how many members actually inhale. To me that's the advantage of a pipe, the range of tobaccos is so great that I' for one, don't feel the need to inhale. BUT - I never smoked cigarettes. I'd also be curious to know if one inhales, can one then not touch a pipe for a week or more, or is the need to have a pipeful a bit overpowering. And QUIT saying these videos are for intermediates and beginners! I've been smoking a long time (since the 70's)and I learn a lot from you.
Dennis Ciurej - the reason I point out that videos are for beginners or intermediate pipe smokers is when I first started doing these types of videos on a different channel, I got a lot of push back with comments like "Look, I've been smoking for 30 years, I don't need you telling me how to smoke a pipe" plus, new pipe smokers are intimidated by the enormity of what it takes to learn how to smoke a pipe, I try to aliviate that stress by telling them that hay this video is for you, so you can learn what you need to know when it comes to pipe smoking. For experienced pipe smokers, if my videos teach them something they didn't know, then they have learned without being alienated. 👍👍👍
About two months ago I decided to quit smoking cigarettes and start smoking the pipe again. I have smoked cigarettes for over 20 years and at times have smoked cigars and had a couple year stretch where I smoked a pipe along with cigarettes. I couldn't get past the chemical addiction. When I started the piping journey in January it was to replace the cigarettes with pipe smoking. I wanted to start experiencing the range of tobacco flavors and truly enjoy smoking without feeling like I had to have it. I'm not there yet but am close. As recently two weeks ago I was still smoking a couple cigarettes a day. Last week I think I had three cigarettes. My wife and a couple coworkers are cigarette smokers so I'm still around them. I do inhale pipe smoke but not as much as I used to. I am more active working on the behavioral aspects of the addiction. I'll take a couple smoke breaks at work and smoke a portion of a bowl which I always inhale. I can smoke the pipe inside at home so I smoke a fair amount. Probably 7 or 8 bowls a day. I think that's better than the pack and a half a day of cigarettes. I've learned a lot from Muttnchop's videos. They have definitely helped me slow down and enjoy the tobacco. I look forward to the day when I am a true pipe smoker and not tobacco addict.
Yes, what I do is as I am breathing through my nose I draw a small amount of smoke into my mouth. It's the same action you perform when you have a sucker in your mouth. Then force that smoke back through the pipe very lightly, you know when your doing it right when you see a thin line of smoke coming from your bowl. I do this three times, but on the 4th time I blow the smoke out of my mouth. Then I start the process all over again
If you draw a little while inhaling through your nose, I think you are inhaling a bit of the smoke even without knowing that. For some this is not a big deal but I don't like that part. Correct me if I'm wrong. Because I can inhale both from my nose and mouth and inhale from my nose and draw only with the muscles of the mouth. I'm not sure which of the two you are describing. If you can elaborate on that
Iktomi - Here is a great experiment to try that teaches you a little better what I’m talking about. You will need a straw and a glass of water. The straw represents the pipe and the water represents the smoke. 1. Put the straw in your mouth in the same position as you would your pipe. Make sure you have a good seal around the straw where no air gets in around the straw. Close the hole at the other end of the straw and breathe in and out through your nose ONLY!!! Do this about 20 times Nice smooth natural breathes in and out. 2. Keeping that good seal around the straw, put the other end of the straw in the glass of water, put your tongue over the end of the straw in your mouth closing off the hole, then breathe in and out through your nose ONLY!!! Do this about 20 times. 3. Last step, remove your tongue from the end of the straw and keeping that good seal around the straw breathe in through your nose ONLY!!! Take a small sip of water and hold it in your mouth, as you exhale out through your nose ONLY!!! Push the water back through the straw. Do this about 20 times, small sips and hold it in your mouth then as you exhale force the water back through the straw. Now replace the straw with a pipe, light it as normal, create a good seal around the bit where no air passes, then breathe in through your nose only!!! Take in good a small sip of smoke into your mouth, hold it there then as you exhale through your nose Only!!! Force the smoke in your mouth back through the stem, lightly, gently, you should see a small stream of smoke coming from the bowl as you do this, repeat this procedure 3 more times, on the 5th time blow the smoke out of your mouth, then repeat the process. I hope this explains it better. 👍👍👍
