The ever-popular original 5.0 Mustang (aka: Fox-body) If you grew up through the '80s or early '90s you experienced and lived it... and here’s a video of it, the Foxbody Mustang, or back in those days simply known as the 5.0 Mustang, 5-liter Mustang or 5.0… the term "Fox-body" which of course is the 1979-1993 Mustang's chassis/platform, actually didn't really take off and become the most known nickname of these cars until after the S197 models hit the streets. With a few generations behind it they started to be identified as the Foxbody more so than the 5.0 or 5-liter. These cars were absolutely the "best bang for the buck" pound for pound champs back in the '80s and early '90s and were just "straight line killers".
For around $10,000 you had a factory performance car that ran mid 14 second 1/4 miles off the showroom floor and with mild tweaking could hit 13 second times... soon tuners were porting heads, extrude honing intakes, gears and slicks and running easy 12 seconds... and the aftermarket exploded!!! Pro 5.0 racers quickly figured out how to run sub-10 second 1/4 miles, by the late '90s a turbo revolution started thanks to racers like Mark Harwell, Gene Deputy and these little turbocharged Foxes were hitting 8-sec and faster times down the 1/4 mile strip. These light little Ponycars became the modern day tri-five Chevy and '32 Ford, and if you lived it you know all about it...
I wanted to toss together a little 5.0 Mustang Foxbody tribute with some of my older footage that I shot back in the day, a tribute to the car and the past, present and future Foxbody Mustang freaks out there. Hope it takes ya back folks! Since I was a young kid I always wanted to build a Time Machine… well I finally did it with this channel #MuscleCarTimeMachine ❤️

After watching this, I'm even more proud to have my 91" GT that I never get tired of. Foxbodys are awesome I don't care what anyone says!

+DopeFragz Doesn't matter what anyone says or thinks anyway... it's what makes you happy and excited, and gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside lol. Five to ten years from now you will be damn happy that you kept the Fox-body because prices are shooting up right now. The window of cheap affordable Fox-Mustang models is closing.

Me too brother! I still have my '91 GT as well. It's in my garage, covered up, and has been off the street since 2005. I am, however, in the process of getting her ready for the summer :-) Seeing a 5.0 on the street where I live is like spotting Bigfoot so I'm excited to be bringing her back out!

I'm a Gen X'er and I approve of this message. My '89 notch is in the garage right now. If you weren't around in the late 80's early 90's its hard to explain the impact this car had. Good 'ol days. This video gave me chills.

As a high school kid in the late 80’s, and the fact my best friend in high school had a stripper ‘89 notch with a 5 psd and 3.08 Trak-Lok, there wasn’t a Chevy in town that was safe. That car hauled ass and took a beating. Never missed a beat. Very fond memories and many miles in that car. Long live the 5.0 HO and the Foxbody. Thanks Ford for many good times and thanks for a great video tribute. Great job.

I had a 5.0 in high school (88-92). It was an 88 GT, 5.0, 5 spd. My only upgrade on the car was a heavy-duty racing clutch. Before GM introduced the new LT-1 in 93, the 5.0 was king of the street for that time. It would eat ANY stock GM of that era. I raced IROC Camaros, Firebird Formulas, Trans Ams, Vettes, 300 Z's you name it. (Obviously not faster than exotics but I'm talking about what another kid might actually have)... The car was REALLY bad ass from a "20 kick" (what they call roll racing now). 20mph, leave it in 1st (3000-3500 rpms) I'd give the GM's a FULL car length head start and tell them "I'll go when you go and if I can't pass you, we'll say you won"

***** LatemodelRestoration.com I have a question for Jeff, Tyler or any other fellas at Latemodel-Resto, do you guys keep past catalogs in storage by chance? ...and if so, would you sell a few? I had a nice collection of catalogs through the years and made the mistake of loaning them out, lol (only to never see them again) I am especially interested in I think the 2002 catalog, I believe it was yellow and featured the old LMR '79 pace car on the cover.... anyway, thanks for being there for us Fox-body guys!

Oh how I miss those cool late summer and early fall nights..... hanging out, showing off our Fox-bodies, TPI 3rd Gens, brand spanking new LT1 4th Gens and SN95 models.... hell we even had a couple above average G-body SS runners in the mix. Picking a potentially good matchup then driving a safe 5-10 miles out of town to the middle of "nowhere" and we would "quickly hit 'em off" ....then slowly cruise back to town while the adrenaline settled and the battle stories of the race began, lol. Cops didn't mess with us, it was good clean motorhead fun the way we did it. A few years later this ridiculous movie came out, titled "the Fast and the Furious" (you might have heard about it, lol) and suddenly the car-world had gone mad, someone opened the Import Sport Compact Tuner gates, giant tail-piped muffler type thingys, obnoxious body kits with wire mess all over it, massive monster grabber rear wings, multiple air vents in fenders, neon light bulbs hanging off everything, and absolutely horrid paint schemes. "A new movement, or another fade.....like a cry for help in a world gone mad", lol..... and it brought us peppy 'lil Vtec Honda Civics, silly Accords, Nissan Sentras with "R" on the back of it, Toyota Celicas that they wished were Supras and their Mom's 4-door Maxima loaded down and packed full of Eminem looking snots stuffed in the backseats 4-wide, started back to back street racing through neighborhoods, school zones and parking lots with their 130hp screamers..... waking up the neighborhood, getting themselves and others hurt, and much worse, killing innocent people unfortunately caught in their crossfire........ that did it for us, cops weren't looking the other way anymore..... American Graffiti was over. Here's a video of the type of "Fast and the Furious" fruit loops that I'm talking about, lol, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_sOC9fB3hxM.html LMAO!!!!

Can't get enough of that 5.0 sound, soothing in a way, I grew up in Winnipeg MB, a teenager in the ninety's and in my old area called the Maples there were quite a few of these five litres kicking around, they put a four way stop sign in front of my house and every night guys would launch hard from that four way, first and second gear chirp, I liked it, drove my mom nuts!

They were everywhere, and that was an understatement. By the time I started high school in 1985, I was getting a first-hand look when some fellow students were bringing them to our auto mechanics class. I even developed a dislike, because I was getting tired of watching street races with nothing but Mustangs. During that time, daily driven big block classics were already scarce, and they were rapidly declining. It wasn't until I got out of the military in 1993, I bought an 89' GT. Then I was hooked, because it was all mine.

I was born in 1996. When I was just a lil' boy, like 4-5 years old when I first saw one, and these things were still the real street kings. Alotta people I know still think they're ugly, and more say they're 'dated'. True, they were a product of their time, and they may not have the best styling, but they had attitude. They had presence, an 'Aura' if you will, that many cars just don't have. I'm 26 as I write this, and I still hope to one day have a 5.0 Foxbody Mustang in my garage, at some point, in my life.

the video is a throw back, but what you wrote is so spot on. I graduated high school in '85, right at the hype of the 5 oh. I bought my '92LX Coupe in '96 with 3000miles on it, it had been a garage queen and was stock as a rock. Original tires. Took me a little over a year to find the one I wanted. Still have it. 56k miles, stock interior, original paint, stock ride height and pony's. R302 block (306), ported stock heads, victor intake, solid roller cam... the sound it makes up over 7000rpm is a delight. Small cubes, small port heads, screaming thru the flowmasters.

Yes back when I was in high school I graduated in 99 that was the end of the era my first car was a emerald green LX hatch back 5.0 5spd 28k miles when I got it in early 98 . Their was still tons of people with their fox body's hanging out , I was the youngest and the baby of the group of guys and girls that graduated late 80 early 90 , I was the last of a dying bread that I literally watched die off . I still have my lx and its my baby . When I bust out a original paint emerald green lx people go crazy . But I don't hot dog anymore . I'm more concerned about somebody else hitting me , it's my week end car if that , I'm not risking breaking anything . clean fox is a 🦄

I always come back to this one. For the past couple of summers, my grandfather has let me daily drive his '89. It's not fast- the engine hasn't been touched- but it's punchy. The 3.55 gears give it a real fun holeshot and the exhaust is nice and quiet- until you floor it and then it's a crack of thunder (stock headers, stock H-Pipe, but muffler delete). I work at a Dodge dealer, so I've driven 500hp Challengers and Chargers. They may be faster, but they aren't nearly as fun as that little 225HP (maybe 230 with the tiny little things done- air silencer removed, 65mm TB, I wouldn't be surprised if he bumped the timing but I haven't asked) 5.0. It's sturdy, too- I do need to put a radiator in it, and I think it's gonna need a clutch cable, but we've run the hell out of it for 94,000 miles and it's taken it real well. For that, plus the memories of childhood, Ford has never, and will never, build a better Mustang than the Fox in my eyes.

It's crazy how so many of us gen x-er's who have never met share the same nostalgic memories and the same impact it had on our car groups growing up. I really don't see the market propulsion slowing down any time soon. If anything they're getting more popular. I've never seen a car market blow up like the fox and a few other 80's-90's cars have recently. Had an 88GT back in the day and picked up my 91 GT a year ago having no idea of the market blowing up on them or how much I would fall in love with them again. Great video.

Every time I watch this vid I get filled with nostalgia. Its been 7 months since I had to depart with my baby "Clarabelle", bought her junior year and that car really showed me what real cars are. I put all my money into it and dont regret it at all. 95 cobra 302, edelbrock performer rpm heads, svo roller rockers, f303 cam, bbk 70mm throttlebody, 24lbs inj's, gt40 tubular intake plenum, bbk pulleys, pro m mass airflow sensor, custom cold air intake, 4.10's in the ass, 5lug with full cobra brakes, bbk longtubes/O/R xpipe and off course the flowmaster american thunder cat back. That car was the meanest in the school! First time I cut her loose in 1st in 2nd I turned white as a ghost, it really scared me. Man the posi rear really fucking gets side ways fast.... WIth MOST of todays cars looking like AN EGG (for a purpose, MPG) the FOX body just looks plain and if its the FOX sedan/coupe well you have a exterior sleeper for sure. If no exterior changes are made like raised hood or bling bling stuff you will have a winner by default and SHOCK someone unsuspecting of that 5.0 (unless they notice those PIPES:)

Drove an 81 with a 351, a 1986 GT with ported 68 heads and ported Cobra intake with MAC headers/Borla exhaust/Roller rockers/75mmTB, drove a 1981 Cobra with a 13:1 460ci big block with ported heads / cam / intake. Anytime, anyplace you thought your GM was faster, I was there to take your money or at least take your pride. Imagine being 20 years old and getting an 87 Grand National and going street racing with all your friends and I give you a three car start and you ended up seeing the ass end of the 351 before you got out of first gear. C4 with shift kit and B&M Trick Shift. The 460 was in another dimension with it's torque levels. Used an FMX to handle it. You wouldn't expect to get spanked by an 18 year old, so if was fun.

I wanted one of these so bad back in the day when they came out. One of the best Mustangs ever made in my opinion. I love the Fox Body design. +markurbancowboy Sounds like you lived the "Fox-body experience" too brutha, lol.... if you didn't experience the Fox-body movement "back in the day" from the mid '80s and through the '90s than they just don't understand, lol. The Fox-Mustang was/is today's '32 Ford and '55 Chevy. I feel what you are saying buddy, I was crazy about these cars from first experiencing them in the mid '80s, to first purchasing my very 1st 5.0 Mustang in the early '90s and love them just as much now as I did then, lol. They are a very special car to us Gen-X gearheads! I have a very special place in my heart for the 3rd Gen Camaro/Firebird models as well, especially the 230hp G92 optioned 5.0 Tuned Port 5-speed IROC-Z and Formula models and 245hp 5.7 Tuned Port models. My two favorite cars, the 5.0 Fox-body and 3rd Gen F-body. Still fun stoplight to stoplight runners even by today's standards, just as long as it's a short run between stoplights, lol. Thanks for stopping in and sounding off Cowboy!

I recently found my old foxbody from high school. I was so happy to see it had been fairly well cared for since I sold it. This one has a happy ending because the current owner told me he was thinking of selling it. We actually made a deal and now my high school ride I drove every day is sitting in my garage. It was surreal for about a year until it sunk in that I had it again. Weird as hell seeing it sitting in my garage. If you live in California I can tell you how I tracked it down. I don't know anything about other states. I used public records....
@chrisdobek1462
@chrisdobek1462 8 лет назад
+John W I live in Oregon now, but the car will hopefully still be somewhere in Michigan. Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, moved out here in the last year to see what the fuss was about. Your happy ending gives me hope. I know there must be some paper work on the thing back in Michigan at my parents house. I'm asking them to look around. I know I will be able to come up with the vin, but i don't know how to track the current owner down. Isn't there some privacy issues with trying to find them online?
@johnw7564
@johnw7564 8 лет назад
+Chris Dobek If you have the VIN, that's huge. Without the VIN you really have a difficult task. Anyway I didn't run into any privacy issues in California. Per a couple of the California Vehicle Codes, some basic registration information is public record. This may be the same as other states I'm not sure. In CA you can fill out DMV form "INF 70", send in $5, and receive an ownership history of your car. Due to privacy issues you only receive a name and city of the current registered owner. But for me that was enough. I used Facebook with that info to find (and email) the owner of my car. The rest is history! :-)

Something that Fox Body says to me, besides the 80s/90s nostalgia, is the 'rural.' It's not a city car, it's a blue collar car and it conjurs up images of the midwest, graffiti under rail road overpasses, Village Pantry parking lots, local bars and a small drag strip.

Great Video John. It got me to thinking there is definitely a need and a market for a 40-60 minute video about the Fox Body Mustang. You could devote the first 10-15 minutes on the history of the car and then move in to how the car brought back the American muscle car and the effect of the aftermarket parts market and some examples of Fox muscle thrown in..........all reasonably priced, I think it would work. I think someone will one day soon!!!!

Cool Scotty, sounds like you had a G92 optioned IROC-Z Camaro with the 230hp TPI setup..... they were some good running machines back then, the top dog 5.0 that GM had to offer and only 5.0 liter that could hang with the 5.0 Mustangs. I had the '90 G92 5-speed model back in the day, and have plenty of old video footage of it on here lol.
