Ummmm, yeah. Ok I'm going to have to call B.S. As a proud gen-Xer myself, yes I'm an independent, strong, intelligent, creative, beautiful, confident woman. My husband, also gen-Xer, is an independent, strong, very confident, smart, beautiful, creative, man. Yes we are equals, because we don't buy into the ridiculous idea of there being some hierarchy of genders, put into the psyche with messages like this. I just wanted to leave this little message to anyone interested, that Gen-X is the best generation, known to be creative problem solvers, thinking for ourselves!! Be yourself, and be happy!! Much love to all generations!💜

I agree. I am a 71 Xer. Boys were still the preferred gender and got the most when it came to sports, attention, etc in school and athletics. There was a pretty huge dichotomy. The boys did not lose out at the benefit of girls. Not at all. They still got the primary advantage and the girls got whatever. Not a big deal back then. We just knew that’s how it was.

I've only watched half so far but, as a Gen-X male I've never had any problems sharing with or even taking orders from girls/women. I even learned to cook, sew and do housework because my mom told me by the time your old enough that stuff wouldn't just be womens work anymore. And yet I have no doubt my manliness is fully intact and I've never felt the lesser by giving girls their place to do what they want or ever standing in any of their ways... I think my hot, confident, independent, successful and loving wife will back me up on that. So maybe this "guy" would have felt to be made a lesser man by all that but, not me... this guy's kind of a weenie

Gen X men are a very interesting bunch. Many are out there watching Society very closely and sucking up knowledge at astounding rates. Watching and listening to society like a group of Alien Cultural Anthropologists all the while being rather quiet. Don't feel sorry for these people, pay attention to what they are doing and try to figure out why it is they are doing it. Might learn something you can't in University.

Because we are the ones that defined our current society. I was raised on the views that life is shitty. Mom wasn't home when I got home. Lessons of self awareness and situational awareness were common place. We watched the Berlin wall fall. We watched the end of the USSR. We watched the challenger explode. We invented watching movies from home. We learned to bridge the gap between isolation and social interaction. We are truly the watchers.

My husband is a strong, confident well educated man, both of us are gen-X, we are equal partners in our marriage and yes! Best friends, best friends that can tell each other anything, be truthful and if I ask him "does this outfit look good on me" I am not looking for a fight, I am looking for the truth. I want him to be honest with me and vice versa. I don't like commercials that bash one sex or the other, or bash anyone really. I say we bring out commercials that show how both sexes work well together as most of my generation does.

I think growing up male in the GenX generation was pretty great, actually. I think it is more the past 10-20 years where it has kind of sucked to grow up as male. The message today is not just pro-female, it is decidedly anti-male. They are told all the men we used to look up to are nothing more than slave owners or sexist or homophobic. Young women are doing much better than young men in terms of academic success and college attendance. They have lower rates of suicide, homelessness and drug use. Often they grow up in fatherless homes. They have pumped troubled boys full of anti-psychotic medicines, yet the typical mass shooter is getting younger and younger. In the aftermath we focus on the gun as the problem and not why so many young men are deeply unhappy. That is what we need to fix in this country.

@T Mox SO when I got hit so hard I flew across the kitchen broke the leg off the table and ended up on the other end with a bloody nose but my sister was never hit like that I was not treated differently. How about the statement suck it up and be a man? That is not said to a girl. Instead she is told oh poor girl and cuddled by the parents. You have no clue what boys and men go threw. Like the fact a female with the same qualifications as a male coming out of college with a engineering degree will out earn the guy for the first five years. The guy only catches up because men work longer hours and week ends and woman generally dont. Not only that but the work the tough jobs that woman dont. I just saw a study that showed men on average work more than females do when you add house work and out side work together. I am so feed up with being told by people like you that only females get the shaft. It is simple not true any longer. Men are held down by the courts, schools, government, and hell even the entertainment industry. And threw this all they continue to carry on and bring the lions share of the income home doing the hard work the females wont or cant do every day. Sucks to be you. I will continue working hard for my wife and family who appreciate the hard work I do and know the struggles that I face in a country that no longer appreciates the sacrifice that men go threw.

Thank goodness the Gen X men didn't internalize the media messages of the time that "real men" didn't change diapers or whatever. Movies like "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Mr. Mom," and "3 Men and a Baby," told the story of men as inept in raising their own kids and how things go disastrously wrong when the man has to take on domesticity full time. Today, a full time SAHD would not be the butt of jokes, he would be admired for putting family first. I'm so appreciative that my Gen X husband didn't think it was emasculating to stay home with his kids. He saw fatherhood as the most important job in the world. The result? His son loves and admires his dad. He is well adjusted, tax paying, honest and wants to be a dad one day, too.

The idea is to make women think that some how working at some boring office job is glamorous and liberating. What it allowed banks to do is get people willing to go deeper and deeper in to debt. When I was a kid, my mother was home --- she was never less than my Dad. I am glad I had my mother there for me when I came home from school or when I went to school. I stay home with my kids -- so what if I don't have a new car every year and don't have a second home. My husband goes to work and I make money by doing things that allow me to be home for my kids. I actually invest in the market and study economics. Last year I made more money staying home than my husband did going to work everyday. FYI -- our economy is FAKE and nothing but a debt fueled Ponzi Scheme. Learn how money is created and you will see how the elites have done everything to destroy the US. This guy is totally right. And for anyone that says he isn't --- I bet you couldn't tell me where money comes from and how it is created. There is a reason why the bankers wanted to liberate women and it wasn't because they cared about them.
@ThunderAppeal
@ThunderAppeal 4 года назад
They wanted women 'liberated' because women are more compliant under pressure than men and will work for less money to do the same amount of work. The degenerates in charge dont want any dissention in the ranks, and men have a tendency of talking back, no upper level manager or ceo wants that. But they will gladly send us men off to war because anyone who refuses to take part is a 'wimp'. Look at the spineless turds in silicon valley, men and women, no one has the balls to stand up to all those scumbags collecting our peronal information to benefit their coprotacracy.

The bankers didn´t liberate women. WOMEN FOUGHT FOR IT TOOTH AND NAIL. The finance industry, marketing, etc, just latch on to trends because THEIR JOB IS TO MAKE MONEY. They don´t care how they make it. They don´t give a shit, so long as they´re making it. To think otherwise is to be completely naive as to how capitalism works. They will always win, yes, because it´s capitalism and they will turn EVERYTHING into a commodity that can be bought and sold.

Here's to the Gen X ladies out there. I grew up with Princess Leia, Marion Ravenwood and Ellen Ripley as my female role models. I was a tomboy in an era where girls could go outside and get dirty, play with toy guns, enjoy violent action films and even envision themselves in the parts. We weren't confined to just being girly or playing with stuffed animals. I also credit growing up around male sexism with helping me to toughen up when it came to my interactions with men. It's a shame that my Gen X brothers weren't on the same high note as the girls were. I'm reminded of a line from Fight Club where Tyler Durden's talking about how they're a generation of men raised by women.

Many accept this structure, but a few completely reject it and rebel. Palaniuk does a great job of showing the resentment and nihilism it breeds in the rebellious.

(Male GenX perspective) - In true Gen X fashion, I start out watching this thinking... "well that's not really true" but by the end I am thinking... "yeah, I suppose it really was like that". We are old enough to have sorted through a lot of that by now but it sort of stunted our ability to get ourselves together. Now obviously this video isn't the whole story but it is a good starting point for the building blocks or lack there of for what we became and the dynamics between our genders. If I am really being honest, it still sort of sucks the way it is but at least piece by piece we are starting to sort it all out. The problem is that our skins have gotten a little too thick and it makes it hard to be ourselves the way we really want to be. For a generation that holds the value of being genuine in super high esteem, it is painful to struggle to be who you really want to be. When we focus on the good stuff it is a lot easier and there certainly is some good stuff but on the days we lose focus on the positive it can really be tough. Luckily, I think we ultimately ended up strong enough to carry that burden and when it comes down to it most people will hardly notice the unique roll we played in bridging the old and the new. We are a small group indeed but it might be wise to hear what we have to say if you ever get a chance to listen.

I saw one HUGE problem with that whole speech. Women still aren’t running anything, inventing anything and still blaming Gen-X men for not stepping aside and handing over the reigns of the world. Don’t forget that these strong, independent equal women still want men to pay for everything too. The biggest upgrade our generation has contributed is a lot of us grew up in desegregated schools and neighborhoods and helped make Americans a lot less racist.🤷🏾‍♂️

The Hummer commercial made me think, there is no antonym for "emasculate", etymologically it is "effeminate". However the two words generally share the same meaning. Society applauds women taking on masculine traits, yet frowns upon both genders for being percieved as too feminine. It's a double-edged sword & there are no winners.

As a gen X man I think what we really had to figure out was how to negotiate a world where women no longer "needed" men for social status, economic security or even to fix the car. In other words, the bar was raised on what a man needed to be to be WORTHY of a woman's attention and regard. That is, I think, a good thing for both men and women. But if men fail to rise to the challenge, it will be worse for them while not changing the advantage for women. Do the math.

The Billie Jean I know, is by Michael Jackson. I went back and watched that video and got more out of it than this one. No it was Buck Rodgers, The Six Million Dollar Man, Hulk with Lou Furegno, Kit and Knight Rider, Star Trek: TOS and TNG that we all watched with our dads and moms. We sometimes even sat there through the Love Boat and Fantasy Island, "de plane boss" echoed as we drifted off to sleep. Not to mention Bob Saget and Unsolved Mysteries on TV. Some of us even remember watching In Search of, narrated by Leonard Nimoy before we got to ten years old. Sure it was in the kitchen on the black and white tv, but from Loch Ness to the people who used giant round stones as currency, it had me hooked. Xena and Hercules, those tv shows, we watched them, and maybe our youngest siblings watched them with us. As a guy growing up, the most memorable phrase I heard people say was, "Why don't you talk more?" If I truly had the answer to that, I would be talking more. The only solution to my problem from my parents was "he will grow out of it". 30 or 40 years later of self struggling with that, who does that to their child? Maybe I have listened to Stefan Molyneux too much, but how do you let your shy son stay that way? Surely if you want your son to do well in life you will do everything in your power to help him with his shyness, right? Yah as a teen I would avoid everyone I could to not talk, even going out of my way to avoid people. I felt like graduation was more like a death sentence, since I could not imagine functioning as an adult in society. Yet here I am, cold, alone, like the Blair Witch Project. We chose the book report to do, and for me it was 1984. The boot stomping in my face, wrong, I will stand and deliver the opposite, forever. Never forget that! Gen X will be the boot on your face. Never die, never surrender, -The Cruxshadows. Like Greek heroes of old called upon to defend, we see storms on the horizon, I see the tempest at the gates. I will stand here at the gates, defying fate, to face the onslaught fighting without surrender or defeat. Sudden silence I realize, breaking teardrops in the rain. With every breathing moment, the pillars are sustained. And waking hands attached to nothing tightly clutching closed, each sleeping vision speaks unheard, and heaven only knows. oops, I got caught up in the song.

For all the trying to fit in to the stereotypes driving yourself ctazy in the process. While knowing we are not much different. Capable of doing eachothers so called male or female jobs, men can look after children, women can build houses, is a fact.Women dressing whatever way they want, for themselves masuline feminine who cares. Metro men taking care of themselves not needing a stereotype mother type figure to look after them, as in cooking, cleaning. The "oh no you're gay" booted out of existense. Guys of Gen-X said F___k it and bought Camaros. LOL. (OK, I bought a Buick Electra, But I was BORN an old man, LOL). P.S. That "Secret" ad is BULLSHIT. Me and my BROTHERS and SISTERS were not allowed to get our learner's permits unless we could drive a stick (manual transmission). It's INCONCEIVEABLE that ANY of us would be allowed to drive without knowing how to change a friggin' tire!

I totally disagree with your premise being I am a genX male, and I never experienced a self-esteem or confidence. My life is never been centered around money prestige power of any type. Growing up I was just fine with the threat of nuclear I live for today I was never a corporate shill and will never be anyone shell my life may not look great to you but I am doing what I want where I want when I want have no idea what the future holds or expectations that I will be there or anything will be there so if you were worried about legacy power control I am sorry you totally do not understand what I find the purpose of life to be as a proud stop trying to harsh my buzz cuz it's not going to work

I like fact that many of my generations (Gen X) men came from households run by single mothers. Usually they are far less threatened by a strong woman. They accept that a woman being strong doesn't make them weak.

Gen X generally had to do for themselves ... I did for the most part. Boomers were selfish, self centered and generally terrible parents. I mean look at the movies that were on at the time. Also abortions rose exponentially when gen X was being born.

I'm not sure I buy this "poor" GenX men/boys thing at all. Times they are a-changing. That's always. Girls had to deal with the expectations of their parent's generation just like boys did. If things shift and become more equalized it may FEEL like men were losing something that was theirs, but what they were losing was ill-gotten gains - a result of having a monopoly on making money. How sorry am I supposed to feel for a generation that finally has to move over a little to let more people have access?

This guy is so correct, it's erie. I was so terrified by my maleness as an 11 yr. Old entering puberty in 1976. I felt guilty everytime I got an erection. Because the ERA movement was telling me every day on the news that my natural sexuality was preverted. It screwed me up so bad, I could never talk to a girl about sex or my sexual desires until I was 20 yrs old and not at all well adjusted.

My father was rarely there, and when he was, he wasn't emotionally present. But my mother was so my brother was surrounded by a female head of the household and two sisters. As a result, he's not macho, but a little effeminate if he doesn't mind my saying so. Not gay but effeminate.

Im glad we kept some family traditions but im glad we left some behind because like it or not teaching boys that they are going to be the masters of the house was very toxic it bred alot of abuser's.

1966...I finally slowed down enough recently to really notice the "pussification" of the American male...and it really concerns me. Is it evolutionary inevitability that through the process of civility, technology, and the disposability of all things that once required fixing, that the alpha becomes extinct...oddly enough its the female who would miss out the most. Most women love the idea of the frontpack wearing dad...but ultimately dont like the reality of it. And how about charisma...ok ...millennials can grab some wit...this comes from excessive reading...but charisma comes from confidence in real world social situations...and our men today are the geeks of yesterday...sorry nerds, it is what it is...I have found that in adult male hierarchies...the same pecking order in a group of males in 3rd grade will reflect the same order 30 yrs later in the same group...not to say that men dont grow and achieve success in different ways...but put those same group of 3rd graders together at 40...and save for a slot or two....the same. ...and yes...on a different note...baby boomers...please let go and retire allready...just get out of the way...sigh

interesting take. nothing was taken away from the boys. it was good the girls having their programs- it shouldn't be hard to education be circular & beneficial for all. commercials have no connection to what is going on. they are funny noise. but this is an interesting take. if anything it just shows the problem with capitalism & how the push of pseudo traditions that ppl cling to are just in themselves collective stockholm syndrome.

While I think you have some valid points about the pro-women message of the times, I think you're also missing another piece of the puzzle: GenX's parents and grandparents. I came from a nuclear family. I had my dad growing up. I had a grandfather and great grandfather growing up. And you know what they taught me, what behaviors they modeled? Men are incapable of taking care of themselves. Let me say that again: Men are incapable of taking care of themselves. Now, I know this isn't actually true. But as I was being prepared for life, I was being prepared to take care of a person who would leave the home all day every day, and then collapse into uselessness once he came home. Dad always needed a nap. Gramps always needed a nap. Women? no naps. Got sh*t to do. Got to do all the housework AND hold down a part-time or fulltime job and take care of the kids. Now, I'm not entirely giving my dad his due, as he did take care of us. And he did do outdoor chores on the weekends. And he did work long hours. But what he presented in the home was minimal effort. The women around me catered to their men because men didn't appear capable of doing crap for themselves, it was their doting wives who did the bulk of the work that I actually saw, and figured out how to make things work in the home. And you know what I saw from the boys my age? Got to go home and take a nap after school. You know what I did? I did crap with my time. I didn't take naps until college, while the boys I knew slept through their childhoods. So take this as a way that patriarchy is/was bad for men too. Because the lesson it taught that women do all the work and men nap lead to women who were just fine on their own and men who weren't.
