What is the nature of American English in its most recent forms? How does generational distance affect changes in language? What is the relationship between digital culture and the forms of everyday and professional expression? How can the study of the history of English over past centuries help us understand the changes we see today? Seth Lerer, Distinguished Professor of Literature and Dean Emeritus of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego, addresses these questions and provokes discussion about the most recent features of the American vernacular. I love the fact that Seth, in a way, lends authority to Urban Dictionary. This latter is adding more value to academia than many other purportedly "serious" publications.

What, you don't think studying how language is changing is worth the effort?

@@TheDanEdwards Of course. But anyone with half a brain knows exactly what's going on. As usual the intellectual class is licking the boots of the ruling class by changing terms to suit their narrative of changing meanings to suit their needs. Please don't think either one is on your side.
