Here's a new Phenol video! I wanted to program a self-generating ambient patch. The Phenol envelope generators have a setting which quantizes the steps according to a musical scale. By using that to modulate the oscillator pitch and setting the envelope to oscillate on its own, the Phenol will continuously play notes going up and down a musical scale. The next step is to randomly trigger the envelope on the VCA. This will cause the Phenol to play random notes from the scale at random intervals.
The audio is then sent to my MS-70CDR and Specular Tempus pedals for delay and reverb. I let the patch run on its own for 20 minutes and recorded it. Apologies for the vertical phone video; I added some kaleidoscopic visuals to replace the annoying black bars.

Have to add a comment here - it's really quite beautiful... you were on to something here and if I were you, I'd get myself that Phenol again and continue the generative journey - you clearly have a gift!

I've not come across any other synth that can create as musically interesting self-generating patches as this. Many of them create interesting self-generating patches, like the 0-Coast or Buchla Easel, but that's usually more on the experimental side, which I also understand the Phenol is capable of from some of the videos I've seen. A Phenol is a bit more expensive than I thought my synth budget would allow, but it still has to make my list as it is so much synth for the money. In a way it isn't far off getting two lesser semi-modulars rolled into one - and I still think it sounds better than most I've listened to.

I just came across this again, a few years later, and I see that I left a comment before I had bought a Phenol. Now I have two with a third coming along soon. It is just so amazingly versatile, and capable of so many surprising sounds too when you just play around it. It was my first hardware synth, and what got me into experimental music, but since it was my first, every now and then I keep looking for other things to augment it with, or even to replace it with, but I always come back full circle when I do, realising more and more that I made the right choice the first time: the Phenol is my "soulsynth" as it were, the one that will always be right for me.

This soooo good!!! Subscribed your channel, love your ambient works! I got a used Phenol coming to me next week from France. And I'm saving up for the Specular Tempus to buy it next month. Can't wait, ambient heaven ;) Greets from Austria!

That´s a very effective idea to get a self generating patch going, chapeau! Should be easy to recreate on other modular synths as well.

Sounds awesome. Would love to see a patch sheet as my Phenol has never sounded anything like this!! :-/ The added FX are obviously a big part of the sound. But the tones you are getting a quite subtle. My Phenol patching has been somewhat less subtle! :D

I wish I made a patch sheet for this! Unfortunately I sold my Phenol but I did take a closeup photo of the patch here: photos.app.goo.gl/irKopvMAY4zVAhT2A The red wires are hard to make out but I believe the routing is: OSC 1 Ramp >> Adder IN 2; Adder OUT - >> Low Pass Filter IN; Low Pass Filter OUT >> VCA 1 IN; VCA 1 OUT >> Mixer IN 1. The key concept here is that ENV 1 is set to "Oscillator" mode and quantized to a musical scale while modulating the pitch of both oscillators. So the oscillators are continuously going up and down a scale. ENV 2 acts as the VCA envelope and is randomly triggered by the LFO. ENV 2 has a has fast attack and decay so that when it is randomly triggered, it only "reveals" 1 or 2 notes at a time. I had to experiment with both ENV 2's attack and decay and ENV 1's rate and number of qunatized steps to get it just right. Hopefully that kinda makes sense. I'll be happy to explain anything if you have questions. Thanks for listening!

@@DreamwareMusic Cool. Thanks for the info. Gives me some more ideas to try & explore. Why did you sell the Phenol? I'm expanding mine with some Eurorack modules & a load of banana to mini-jack cables. Only have one module so far. But fun having some more patching options.

It's quite incredible. I've been at it for a while this evening, following your patch advise, the image, settings that I can see on the photo (thanks for the link). I can't get anywhere near these kinds of tones. Not even close. It's light years away! :-( Are you sure you didn't accidentally add a completely different recording to your Phenol video?! I've never heard tones like this out of a Phenol anywhere else. I'm scratching my head. Mine just sounds like a pissed off wasp flying past a shit microphone!

........... Hang on! I'm not sure what I did but had a bit of a eureka moment not long after my previous post! Suddenly I'm much closer. Also employed a shimmer reverb in Propellerhead Reason, which as you said is a big part of the sound. Okay. Things a sounding a bit nicer now. I also doubled up the pulse output from OSC2 & hooked in to the OSC1 sync. Now I'm not getting the angry wasp beating thing. Sweeeeeeeet :D

@@Dogboy73 Nice! Tbh I'm kicking myself for selling my Phenol. I'm itching to recreate this patch! It's important for the first envelope to be set to loop mode and to use the Phenol's scale quantize. The oscillators' pitch should be going up and down a scale SLOWLY. As you noted, FX plays a big part here. Before the reverb, I also have a long 2 or 3 second delay from my MS70CDR pedal to create those trailing repeats you hear in the video.

Fantastic.Your track force to purchase fenol. What is a patching to randomly trigger VCA?
@DreamwareMusic
@DreamwareMusic 5 лет назад
That's awesome, enjoy! I'm randomly triggering the VCA envelope by patching RAND OUT to Envelope 2's GATE IN. I set the attack and release to be pretty quick so that it only plays 1 or 2 notes when it gets triggered. See the conversation I had with Antony Doria below for a few more details and a closeup photo of the patch.

@@DreamwareMusic thanks a lot for such a quick response. Will try to replicate. Will also try to connect Fenol with Lyra 8. And Behringer DeepMind.

@@drysabre2242 Oh wow a Lyra 8! I'm jealous! How do you like it? It sounds beautiful from the demos I've watched

It's amazing. I am thinking about micro-tuning and binaural sounds. Lyra seems to be perfect for this. I am also thinking to add DMAF to the gang. DMAF can add a perfect percussive component.

very good job, would it be possible to have the patch? I do not see well on the videos. thanks to you;

Thanks for listening! I have since sold my Phenol and unfortunately I didn't write down a patch sheet for this, but I did take a closeup photo of the patch so you may be able to make out the connections. I have also described the patch in more general terms in the video description above. Here's the link to the patch photo: photos.app.goo.gl/irKopvMAY4zVAhT2A

it's me again. I have two questions, did you make this track just with phenol? For the photo of the patch that you sent me, I do not see how connected are the red patches on the right of the photo, can you help me? sorry and thank you
@DreamwareMusic
@DreamwareMusic 6 лет назад
The phenol was the only synth used here, for effects I ran the audio through th MS-70CDR and Specular Tempus pedals. The delay and reverb from the pedals are a big part of this piece. The red cables are tough to see! I'm not 100% sure but I think I had it wired like this: OSC 1 Ramp >> Adder IN 2; Adder OUT - >> Low Pass Filter IN; Low Pass Filter OUT >> VCA 1 IN; VCA 1 OUT >> Mixer IN 1. Hope that helps!
