In this video I explain the basics of subtractive synthesis with an emphasis on modular synths. This is intended for complete beginners to synthesizers. We cover concepts like timbre, synthesis, harmonic content, the fundamental, control voltage, gate, trigger, audio vs control signals. The video starts off with theory and we end the second half with a practical demo using the Kilpatrick Audio Phenol semi-modular synth. This tutorial is not gear specific and the concept should apply to any subtractive synth.

This video is excellent for a beginner like me. It really breaks things down to the most fundamental building blocks in a calm and easy to understand way. I'm sure that I will now have a better start with my modular synth when the post office delivers it in the coming days. Keep up your wonderful ways of explaining things.

Thank you for your channel. You're a big reason I pulled the trigger on a DeepMind 12. Keep it up, we're watching!

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I do IT work and the same intimidation factor is certainly present when viewing a wall of network connections, but ultimately it all makes sense and is not that bad once you get used to the processes. WHY THE HELL WOULD ANYONE DOWNVOTE THIS??!?! Thank YOU! 😎

Really like your channel man. Always clear and to the point, good balance between talking and playing, I subscribed. I had plans to buy a Deepmind 12 and you've made some great videos about it. Also your videos about eurorack are amazing! Man, I hope you make some more outstanding stuff in the future, greetz from Holland!

This was so helpful! I'm going to be using a fixed architechture synth, but this helped understand what's actually going on to make it work. Thanks!

This was awesome, I am starting to get the hang of my new modular system now. Thank you so much for this. I hope you may have more of these coming. There are some modules I'm still trying to figure out such as sample and hold, quantizer. I haven't found any video tutorials as clearly explained about them, especially how to patch them. Hopefully these would be good ideas for future videos :)

Thank you glad it was helpful. Thanks for those suggestions I'll definitely be making more tutorials about modulars in the future, I'm starting to build a eurorack modular now so stay tuned!

I don't know what your background is but you would make a great teacher. Love the videos, learning so much.. really trying not to go bananas and buy tons of modules.. I guess i need to start somewhere though. thanks!

I totally agree. I think you are an awesome teacher = clear, concise, and you know how to keep reinforcing key concepts without being redundant. I just got a mother32 and this has helped a lot. Thank you.

I've been tuning since 2002... but even so, I found certain aspects of your presentation informative & overall, it was fun to watch :] P.S. I've got *ÜBER* cheap Internet ( $16/mo. ) & your stuff looks 720p even in 480p! Keep feeding our Brains!!! Also, get you a Ø Coast & make some vidyas with that critter! Mine came in the mail like 2 days ago. Good craic√

Thanks! The 0-Coast looks pretty tempting I admit. I've actually started to build a eurorack system so I'll be posting vids about that soon.

Have you still got the Phenol?
@gamemastertristan3951
@gamemastertristan3951 7 лет назад
Are you happy with the Phenol? Some people say the sound is too sterile. What do yo think?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
I'm so-so on it. I don't think it sounds sterile, but it definitely has a more lo-fi sound to it. I find myself going towards the eurorack more for whatever reason but I haven't given up on the phenol just yet.

I know deadmau5 is heavily into those stuffs but why do ppl use analog synth? Is it like a valve amp to guitarist?
@onceuponasynth
@onceuponasynth 7 лет назад
Do you mean analog synths in general or specifically modulars? Analog synths just have a different sound in general and have different strengths and weaknesses compared to digital synths. The analog vs digital debate is pretty controversial in the synth community. In my opinion both are equally valid and both should be used as long as the resulting sound is what you want. I would relate it less to valve vs non-valve amps, but more to real valve vs valve emulation. But not all digital synths are analog emulations, some offer truly unique sounds that are only possible with digital synths (e.g. FM, wavetables, etc). So it's really hard to make a generalized comparison between the two types. Hopefully that helps shed some light on this often touchy subject :)
@AllenP12
@AllenP12 7 лет назад
Oh okey It all makes sense now, I guess all the music instrument controversies these days are about original instrument vs digital emulation. I literally don't know anything about analog/modular synth stuffs but hey, just thought it look pretty damm cool and decided to look up some tutorial vids ;) It looks really interesting and want to give it a try sometime. Great video btw nice and clean!

I wish people on RU-vid would write a script and follow. Don't talk about something and say we're not going to talk about that. Parts were good but to much talking. I think if you go back and re-watch you would agree
