I’m not a musician and have never studied music nor ever played an instrument. But I am a listener. In my mind I know all of Suppers Ready (and lots of other pieces) from start to finish, inside out. I’ve heard it on vinyl record and cassette tape and CD and digitally, hundreds of times. I just loved watching your break down here. WhiIe I don’t understand stuff about chords and triplets and things, I do understand the complexity and the difficulty. Well done sir!👍

Probably my all time favorite keyboard solo. You can keep your flashy Wakemans and Emersons. I'll take Banks somehow playing a brilliant story of brilliant motifs in a totally different time signature than the rest of the band while never actually losing track of time or getting off beat. I can imagine being Hackett or Rutherford and just having to keep counting out 9 over and over again till you get out of the Apocolypse section, cuz darn if listening to whatever Tony's doing isn't going to confuse you. What I can't imagine is being Phil Collins, somehow having to constantly split the difference between the riff and the solo while still throwing in good fills and complimenting the solo. The whole section is pure madness, and I had no idea Tony played a tritone right before Gabriel came in singing 666! Epic.
@MyNameIsNeutron
@MyNameIsNeutron 4 года назад
It's not so much that he played a tritone himself as the last note happened to create one with the guitar

I don't know how Steve, Mike and Phil hung in there for this 9/8 section. That's some serious counting out time! I saw the W&W show (Seconds Out) and my jaw was on the floor when they played this! Truly amazing!

Banks said that Collins had to figure out a rhythm he could count. For non musicians such as I, it goes: boom boom ting, boom ting, boom boom boom ting. So 2/1, 1/1, 3/1- adds up to nine of course. Banks is playing in divisible time for a bit, but goes into 4/4... I don't know how Collins and Rutherford kept from getting confused, I can't can't keep it up. There's a RU-vid of Hackett and his people doing it. Watching the singer wiggle and look around, I knew he didn't know where the 666! lyric came in and sure enough, missed it. Ha! I know it better... You, Mr. Neutron, are rather brilliant. Happy birthday- and to Tony Banks as well.
@talis61
@talis61 4 года назад
I'd have prolly put the boom tings in a different order (from a drummers perspective and how I learned it originally) but no matter, for you are right - there are 3 booms 2 booms and 1 boom with tings in between - its not that I really wanted to correct you but moreso construct a sentence out of the "boom tings" words you used which I thought sounded nice ;-)

I listened to a great interview Sept 2020 with Chester Thompson (his insights into Zappa were insane), but he said about Phil Collins being immensely talented as a drummer was proved in this song. He said Collins was able to not only keep the 9/8 beat going while accenting the music with Mike on bass, but he also kept the 4/4 solo by Tony going and accenting his work all at the same time. He said 'I am a pretty good drummer, but I don't know how Phil was able to do that. BUT HE DID'. Check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1gJ_a5h284Y.html

Really enjoyed that. I'm a novice, novice piano player of 3 weeks. Been reading and watching lots of music theory stuff and sort of getting my head around it before I bought a keyboard. A long time Genesis fan and this is my favourite song of all time. I understood a fair bit of what you were saying. For me Tony Banks is a genius which makes me think that the 666 couldn't possibly be a coincidence or the work of the Devil! 😂😂 Pure genius, thanks for posting

I started following Rick Beato when he started his YT channel. IMHO, you are the Rick Beato of keyboards! I have subscribed and have an intuition you're on the way to simular success - not because of slick marketing; but, valuable content. Cheers from San Francisco.

That’s very high praise indeed! I think Rick may be the Rick Beato of keyboards, but I’m the Rick Beato of Supper’s Ready. I wanna do a sequel on In the Cage now though.

Don’t want to disrespect a classically trained pianist? But- you know your shit bro! Holy crap if that 666 lyric thing was by chance but you spotted it that in itself is totally amazing! Very very interesting video, I also love Yes & ELP but I personally think Keith Emerson is a fantastic key board player but some of his solos are a bit indulgent, but Mr Banks in my mind is the best! Thank you for a fantastic video.

That was great. I agree 666 was a coincidence since the first time Tony heard it was when Gabriel sang it on the already finished bed track. He was miffed at first as he wanted it to be instrumental but he then realized the vocal sounded excellent.

Like the Bible says: Everybody loves themselves some Supper's Ready. It is a bit like Finnegans Wake or Close to the Edge or Siddhartha or Firth of Fifth. One never stops learning new things about them, and they seem to end, in at least one sense, with river dissolving into sea. "Can't you feel our souls ignite...shedding ever-changing colors in the darkness of the fading night. Like the river joins the ocean, as the germ in a seed grows, we have finally been freed to get back home." Death a mere ascension into the clouds, to return, to fall, to flow, to fin again, and again, and again.

For us regular guys never ever possibly being capable of playing the thing, all that remains is being jealous of the talent (of this video author and of course of TB the actual composer) and to listen - now to listen more knowledgeably. And this is very much. Thank you.

Awesome insight, thanks alot for sharing this. On a side note, I'm a bit tired of hearing about the "Devil's" tritone, which is a whole bunch of crap, liturgical music never deemed any sound as "devilish", and people just called it that out Black Sabbath using it in the 70's. Learn your history folk.
