People that don't like Phil Collins should get their heads examined. This man was an incredible drummer, songwriter and vocalist. There is just no doubt about that.
@@ehbenson2948 no. If you don't understand the impact from this man on the development of modern music, and his position in pop / rock and progressive rock in the last 5 decades, you should keep your mouth shut.
So sad to see the state of Phil’s health these days, but we will always have the music, the videos and the memories of the consummate performer he once was.
The song is so rare that no one could ever sing this but Phil Collins. This man is so iconic everything he sings has stood the test of time. I love it all today as much as I did the day it was recorded. Much love to Phil and Genesis 💚
Yeah, and what's so interesting is he never wanted to be a singer. He was a drummer. But when Peter Gabriel left the band they interviewed about 200 singers and didn't like any of them. Then one day Bill Bruford suggested that he (Collins) become the singer and Bruford agreed to drum for one concert tour until they could replace him full time. That's what they did and the rest is history.
I was actually at this concert, about 30 rows of people from the front. It was just incredible and to this day I don't think I have ever heard such an incredible sound system. Cannot believe it's 32 years ago..
The original 7" single was released about 40 years ago on the 19th of August, 1983. Still as haunting and intense as 40 years ago and this live performance sends shivers down the spine with Phil's demonic-like laughter, what makes this song so special.
We lived in rural Louisiana when this song came out and had gotten a 10 ft satellite dish the year before loaded with all the cable and network channels, live feeds sent to studios, and more. MTV was amazing back then for me as an isolated rural singer, keyboard player, and drummer who had been so restricted on music by the very limited selection on radio and network TV. It blew our minds! Before I sat by an FM radio night after night and also had a cassette boombox to get album debuts they played at midnight sometimes. I got the second Van Halen record that way.
I second THAT!! Been lovin Mr. Collins since a very young age. He's been an influence in everyone's life and there's some that don't even know it yet.#PhilCollinsistheGOATofeverypreferenceofMINE!!**
@@ianscott6265 David is great but direct me to a song David sings where he belts it out like Phil does. Phil can even belt out a song while behind his drums sounding better live than studio versions all the while doing it effortlessly. David is a mellow singer which is keeping in a safe zone. Phil on the other hand, BAM!
Gives an ominous tone throughout - whomever directed this performance was a fantastic talent. It is not always easy to get the full effect of a live performance.
To me, a textbook example of how to build up tension and emotion in a song and release it in a grandiose way. What a song, what a powerfull dynamic voice!
check Phil's another song, In the Air Tonight. The tension, the build up and the outcome there is even better than this (hard to imagine but it's true).
@@hoarder1919 That must be some song only fans know or something. Nice to get a recommendation that isn't just one of his biggest hits that everyone knows already. Thanks!
This is just an incredible performance from all 3 of them. 120,000 people hanging on every word he sang and I'm sure they can remember it like it was last week. I can watch it over and over again, Just Awesome!!!
It was a good era for music many bands at that time could compare to them bee gees scorpions pink floyd Metallica meat loaf bon Jovi... like really so many.. 80s and 90s best time for music
You took the words right out of my mouth. I remember it on the radio, and seeing it live. The song has meant so many different things to me throughout the years. It aged with me. :)
@@carloldham261 This SONG is much older . . . I can remember it in the early 80s ! I was born in 1968 . . . and I loved it by first listen . . . when I was 12 or 13 yo !
GOD BLESS YOU PHIL
Thank you for this great upload. My special thanks go to a cab driver in New York. Phil Collins told this story about the creation of this musical milestone. Phil was sitting in a cab in New York in the summer of 1982 and the cab driver played the song "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five loudly. In this song there is always a repeated "ah huh-huh-huh". According to Phil, he has had the "ah huh-huh-huh" in his head ever since. When he wrote Mama, he integrated this "ah huh huh huh" in his typical way. That was the ultra-short version I remember of the birth of "Mama". This cab driver should be memorialized. If it hadn't been for him, "Mama" would probably never have existed in this form. Of course, my thanks also go to Edward G. Fletcher, Melle Mel Clifton "Jiggs" Chase and Sylvia Robinson for the song „The Message“. The latter is known from "The Sugarhill Gang" who actually brought hip hop and breakdancing to the people with their anthem "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. Servus from Bavaria
Wow, Phil really belted out this song. He was at the height of his powers then. Kinda sad to see him now, with his back issues. May he find healing soon.
That's the secret of Life... No one moment will ever be duplicated. Put it into human history over thousands of years and you can not feel other than blessed if you were one of the lucky ones present at this concert. This frame of mind can be applied to most things in life.
My favorite Genesis song and what a OUTSTANDING performance!!! It’s one of those songs that has a lot of minor parts that come together and the band does it so well! Most of all, the vocals are SO POWERFUL! This is certainly one of Phil Collin’s best vocal performances and every time I hear it, it is even stronger than the previous performance! WOW!!!!!!
Thanks for shouting out Daryl! I was trying to remember who played outstanding bass on this with Chester on drums, Tony and Mike killing it, and Phil's best live vocals ever.
My Dad used to blast this song every saturday. I was very small when the first time I heard this, and got scared of the sound of its intro and phil's laugh .. but now, this is always be my favorite
I can't see you, mama But I can hardly wait Oh, to touch and to feel you, mama Oh, I just can't keep away In the heat and the steam of the city Oh, it's got me running and I just can't brake So say you'll help me, mama 'Cause it's getting so hard, oh-ooh Now I can't keep you, mama But I know you're always there You listen, you teach me, mama And I know inside you care So get down, down here beside me Oh, you ain't going nowhere No, I won't hurt you, mama But it's getting so hard, oh-oh, ahahahah! Can't you see me here, mama? Mama, mama, mama, please? Can't you feel my heart? Can't you feel my heart? Can't you feel my heart? Oh-woah Now listen to me, mama Mama, mama You're taking away my last chance! Don't take it away Can't you feel my heart? Ahahah, ahahah, oh It's hot, too hot for me, mama But I can hardly wait My eyes, they're burning, mama And I can feel my body shake Ah, don't stop, don't stop me, mama Oh, make the pain, make it go away No, I won't hurt you, mama But it's getting so hard, oh-ooh Now I can't see you, mama But I know you're always there You taunt, you tease me, mama But I never, never, never can keep away It's the heat and the steam of the city Oh, mama, got me running and I just can't brake So stay, don't leave me, mama 'Cause it's getting so hard, oh Don't go! No, no, don't go! D-d-don't go! Don't go! No, no, no, don't go! Don't leave me here, don't go! Don't go!
I listened to this live from the maternity ward in the Lister Hospital (Stevenage), we had the windows open. My wife was is labour giving birth to my son who is now 30.
When I saw this on TV in 1990 I instantly became a Genesis devotee! I think I had Invisible Touch and Phil’s But Seriously but I spent the next few years getting all the albums. I never get tired of listening to this incredible band. In fact I’ve Three Sides Live booming as I lie in the sun now!
God I love the power in his voice then! Goosebumps! Oh Phil you really are a true legend! He sings with such passion you feel like he is bringing the song/music to life ... playing out a story ! True genius x
Huh, yes in balance... When my homeland is fully crushed. And all of ours wishes and dreams was destroyed in one moment... Yeah, the world was happy... Somewhere but not on my land. There is nothing personal.
