I've got one of these openers I have been fighting with for a couple of years, after it has sat for a couple of hours it will start to open the jerk to a stop, close it again it will work fine. I've went through about every adjustment I can think of with not success.
yep, been working with Genie trying to figure it out. It will stay open @1 in off the floor, go a foot and it will open on it's own. It tend to not work after sitting all night. but not everyday maybe 3-4 time a week now. @@sosgds
Hello Do. I would not call you cheap but wise. The 800 lumens that most LED bulbs offer are more than enough for good lighting to the garage. I recently made a video highlighting that comparison with the contractor Genie motor with built-in LEDs.
I have an old genie garage door 1/2 HP model IS550/A with the screw drive rail (3 piece). I think the motor went out. I’m looking at replacing it with this one but my current rail is 9ft (107 inches to be exact) and the garage door is 7 feet 6 inches tall (5 panels). I’m assuming I may need the extension rails to make it work? The one I’m currently looking at is the Genie StealthDrive Connect Model 7155-TKV Smartphone-Controlled Ultra-Quiet Strong Belt Drive Garage Door Opener & Garage Door Opener Extension Kit for 5-Piece Belt-Drive Tube Rails, Metallic. Do you think this would work? Any help would be appreciated.
Hello! Yes, you will need an extension to the Genie rail assembly. Or you can try and get your hands on a one piece 8 foot rail. Both solutions should work on the 7155. Have you considered the 6170?
Thanks for the video but I didn't see a part were you installed the battery pack. It seems straight forward but mine came with no screw homes for the two screws near the bottom. Did yours?
Hello! Yes the screws are usually hidden in the housing of the battery. I think Genie finds it practical to hide them there but sometimes they do get lost. Two small 1/4" head screws should do the trick. Just don't use long screws. They might screw into a portion of the motor and that could damage it.
yes, i’ve installed a chain drive version, and i hate the rails. it’s not too hard as long as u know what ur doing. also, i’m sure u know this but in the video u didn’t say it so just a tip, after u set the travel limits, u have to run it a full cycle through by the wall button because that sets the force. and people say oh the customer will, but the installer knows they door has to be moving free and nothing is in the way because the fist time u run it the force isn’t set.
You are absolutely right. That's one of why I re emphasized the importance of studying their manual. Most the time if the customer cycles with the remote the force setting should be ok. Great reminder!!!!
Thank for mention problems people having with this Genie that this youtuber did not mention. My lights are all red , the rail is stuck in the middle and nothing working with the buttons. the light indicators is doing nothing. I'm ready to return this junk back to Costco.
@@ien2023 wow, i’m sorry you are having trouble. you can call GENIE CUSTOMER SUPPORT and they can help you. i’ve called them for 2/3 genies i’ve done. yes, it’s a pain, but it should save you some time.
Don't need wi-fi and backup battery. And the price is $300 at Costco. Any models without bells and whistles but with lifetime warranty on motor and belt?
This is a very informative video and I might be purchasing this thru Costco which is on sale right now for $189.99. Is this okay for a 7’ x 16’ garage door?
Absolutely! It should be able to lift your 16 (wide) by 7 (tall) door easily. I confidently install this motor on insulated doors too. Thanks for the question!
Thanks. I wish I would have watched this before attempting the install. It took me 4 hours with most of the time spent hiding the wiring. I couldn't figure out the programing until your video as I was pushing the set button after I did the down and up instead of both after the down and then again after the up. As an engineer I agree a one piece rail would best I really didn't like the design as there is nothing holding the rail pieces together except for the tension of the belt. I was tempted to bolt all the pieces together. It would be really nice if they pre-drill holes and supplied bolts for us to do this.
Thanks for the comment. They used to have rails that bolted together which would provide a much sturdier design. But like many things made today, to lower cost corners are cut.
Got mine from Amazon. Lifts my single garage door but struggles greatly. Now I must contact a pro garage door tech to see if he can adjust more tension on the torsion springs. 😪
@@sosgds I did not do a balance check and I notice before I installed the opener, that the door did not fully open. It only opens 90 %. I guess that's why I need to call a pro. I will not attempt to adjust the torsion springs. I did that years ago and almost broke my finger when the spring popped loose as I was trying to tension it ! Forgot to mention the single garage door is made of wood.
Hello. The trolley carriage should move freely along the rail assembly to engage into the turnbuckle. Of course this needed to be applying before screwing or tightening the turnbuckle onto the rail assembly.
@@sosgds I think I figured it out. I will have to align the turnbuckle and the trolley carriage by lifting the door manually until the two are aligned. Once the head unit and the rail are mounted, in every instruction it is just written to align the trolley carriage with the turn buckle, but not how. I was under the impression that I will have to move the turnbuckle towards the trolley and not vice versa.
So my dad hired some guy to do this and the rail in the middle isn’t leveled at all. And the garage doesn’t close at the bottom. It gets stuck and than it starts to open again.. sometimes I have to mess with it till it finally closes. It’s annoying. How do I fix this ? Just leveling the top middle rail ?
Hello John. Yes the position of the rail assembly should be level from the header (about 3" - 4" above the springs). And the motor can be slightly lowered just about 2" above the door when it's completely open. That should help with leverage. Now the other thing you might be experiencing is poor door balance if your door balance closing seems a little tight, that is it seems like it takes sufficient amount of pressure to keep the door closed then that would cause The problem you're experiencing. Another issue that could also be happening is the door tracks are tighter or perhaps tucked in a little bit more making it difficult for the door to close properly. Thus it could be a number of issues but the leveling of the garage door should be able to help in the leverage for it to close. Hope that helps! Thanks for the feedback!
@@sosgds yes, bought on your recommendation and love the features but don't see a 10 ft extension anywhere to buy. Was thinking of returning and getting a side mount garage door opener. B6172h from genie. Thoughts? Appreciate the reply.
@@Matt91593 Hello again Matthew. So I tried looking for the part number for Genie's 10 foot rail and it does not seem to be available. I know there was one available for the motor you have but it be discontinued. At any rate I think the B6172 will you next best choice. In fact that motor can lift door up to 14' tall. But a word of caution, there is an extra step you'll need to take in order to set the travel limits. You will also want to make sure if you have standard 4" drums for an 10' or 12' door. www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fddmgaragedoors.com%2Fparts%2Fimages%2FDR-400-12.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fddmgaragedoors.com%2Fparts%2Fpart%2FDR-400-12.html&tbnid=u_1pRi5-cRGM1M&vet=12ahUKEwjU3bj9o_vzAhVlJ30KHYNcAfEQMygBegUIARCmAg..i&docid=3BlI6g_fQEzaYM&w=800&h=600&q=4%22%20garage%20door%20drums&ved=2ahUKEwjU3bj9o_vzAhVlJ30KHYNcAfEQMygBegUIARCmAg I hope this helps.
@@sosgds I have drums that look just like that on each side with a big heavy duty looking spring. Basically just buy and install? And can you Install on either side because the left side has hardly any room?
Hello. It depends on what you value more. The Genie offers a quieter motor experience at a relatively lower price point. The Chamberlain has better lighting with the higher lumens. Also the rail is much sturdier albeit it's boxy design. Also MyQ wifi is a stronger wifi expensive.
@@sosgds Thank you, sir. I think I'm going to go professional install. Your videos have been so informative that it's allowed me to make a good decision on DIY vs Pro install.
You will need to purchase an extension for the rail. This is an piece you might have to purchase directly from Genie. But if you have it professionally installed you might be able to find a dealer to offer you a one piece 8 foot rail for an additional cost. store.geniecompany.com/products/extender-kit-to-8-for-3-piece-chain-drive-c-channel-rails
@@sosgds That link goes to an extension for a chain drive. The link for the belt drive is store.geniecompany.com/products/extender-kit-to-8-for-5-piece-belt-tube-rails
I see. Well this particular motor would offer a lot more features than a garage door motor from 5 or 10 years ago. So I believe you would be happy with it. The only thing I steer away from these retail motors is the fact that they have a piece rail assembly. So usually I recommend especially with the genie motor a one-piece rail assembly.
@@sosgds yes that rail you mentioned in the video really convinced me to second think of purchasing a new one. My current one has a one piece rail. It still runs well just not sure if the benefits outweighs a new installation. Thank you for replying! I appreciate it.
I HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS DEVICE. I JUST GOT ONE AND I STILL SONT SEE WHAT CARRIES THE DOOR ITSELF. I MEAN HOW TO ATTACH THE PULLER TO THE DOOR.
@@sosgds Thank you man. I'm really very appreciative to get your answer. I managed to figure it out by myself. No one is actually mentioning that the puller must be in the middle of the chain attach and once the engaged, it'll pull the door. I just replaced this model to the one that has a chain that I had before the engaging system is different. Again. Thank you..
@@davescellphone5376 Hello. There's a possibility the trolley carriage is not engaging into the turnbuckle. Are you able to set the turnbuckle trolley half way up and then lift the door by hand to engage? Quick pro tip: make the sure the emergency release cord is in the up position and not the down position.
I bought this same model to replace my current Genie garage door opener. Do you think I can just replace the motor instead of replace the whole system which includes the rail and chain?
Hello! No unfortunately you will have to go through the entire installation process with the rail period this rail is particular to the genie brand and it won't work with any other rails that are not Genie.
Hello Tim. Yes I believe it is adequate. But if you can get your hands on a Genie solid one piece rail than I would go that way. Are you installing the motor or are you having someone install it for you?
@@sosgds I’m going to try to dim (do-it-myself) 😂 . That’s why I’m want to have everything ready so I don’t have to run to the hardware store to get something in the middle of the installation
Not at all. They are replaceable but Genie doesn't have the part number up on their site. The Chamberlain & LiftMaster WLED versions do have a replaceable light cover. If that helps.
This is true. Yet I don't think it's a reason to NOT buy the 7155L. The LEDs are rated to last a while. The length of time escapes me but it potentially offers 20K life cycle.
Thanks. Shopping for a opener now. This model is $300 at Costco. Don't need all of those options like back up battery and Wi-Fi etc. But would like to have lifetime warranty on motor and belt...

I would not try to install yourself. It is a pain in the ass. I just install mine but it's stuck in the middle. I think prob need to reprogram my limit. The problem is the program button doesn't click. When I push it, it's like pushing bended plastic with no click. The buttons are hard to press and the lights indicators are confusing. And what are the small 2 round buttons on the side use for? No where in the manual they even mention it.
Hello. Sorry you are having so much trouble with the install. I have seen cases where the buttons to the travel limits are somehow stuck and will not properly set the program. If your retail motor is new and potentially defective I would try and get support from Genie or where you purchased it. Did you happen to purchase the older version of the 7155L? Or is it one of the newer Signature Series motors?
i saw a video where a guy said the plastic buttons are not pushing the microswitches underneath. Try taking the bottom plastic case off to see the board with 3 microswitches.
@@sosgds I mean that looks like a typo, but in the video you said DYI instead of DIY pretty much the entire time. Nobody is perfect. Corey brings up a good point, why are you wearing a mask while you are alone the entire time?
Thank you so much for the feedback. You're absolutely right. I think I say it several times in many videos. But the online coaching and courses I am taking for my RU-vid business say it's ok to start messy and try focus on making better content. And as for the mask, I believe that day the customer was sick. So it kept in on as a precaution. Thank you again for the feedback.
