The West is the New Culture Forum's landmark six-part documentary series exploring the history, achievements and genius of Western civilisation. Inspired by legendary TV programmes such as Civilisation, Kenneth Clark's 1969 masterpiece, The West is a bold reminder of who we are -- and why our culture is worth defending.
Episode 2: The Christian Revolution
“These that have turned the world upside-down are come hither also!” In Episode 2, Marc Sidwell traces the influence of Christianity on the West, from its shocking arrival in Europe, to its encounter with Roman power and its adoption by the post-Roman barbarian world of the Franks and Saxons.
The importance of women in spreading the faith gets particular attention - from Saint Photina to Queen Bertha of Kent and the remarkable story of Bathilde, slave turned liberator. Christianity’s revolutionary doctrines emphasised individual choice in line with god-given reason, and a spirit of moral equality that raised up the low and the weak - transforming Western society.
New episodes of The West premiere weekly, here on our RU-vid channel:

Episode 2: The Christian Revolution
Episode 3: The Rule of Law: • Genius of Western Civi...
Episode 4: The Invention of Science
Episode 5: How Did The West Get So Rich?
Episode 6: Is The West History?
ABOUT THE SERIES:
In six 30-40 minute episodes, The West offers a brand new, panoramic account of our extraordinary, unconventional civilisation. This is the great, and still unfolding adventure of Western civilisation: who we are and why it matters, retold for a new generation.
The West is written and presented by Marc Sidwell, Senior Fellow at the New Culture Forum and author of the NCF's critically acclaimed book: "The Long March: How the Left Won the Culture War and What To Do About it".

As a Roman Catholic and as a Hungarian, I want to thank NCF as I learned several important historical facts from this program. I would also like to note that England has a wealth of very accessible, relevant heritage of saints and thinkers. Thomas Becket, Thomas More, John Fisher, John Henry Newman, G K Chesterton, C S Lewis, or contamporary philosophers like Swinburne, Polkinghome, etc. etc.

I think you might be missing the point a bit. Surely Its the ability to question the very idea that anything is Universal, vthat lies at the heart of Wests dynamism. The idea that there is only one way to do or even understand anything as abstract as God is anti Western thinking. The ideas Christianity spread may have been important but that doesn't say anything about the extent of their actual truth.

My Christianity is the secular kind, but I do certainly credit Christianity with the central role in the evolution of the West. IMO, the West is first and foremost "a state of mind" that evolved in the West but is open to the whole world. Just by being a Christian and a Catholic, you have taken a giant gulp of Western culture and are as much a part of it as any of us! The West, excluding a minority of religious dogmatists, is an open culture and does not require the abandonment of the traditions of your native culture that you find of value.
@maritheresereyes

@@edcottingham1 I do agree that the West in now a state of mind. I heard from the historian Stephen Kotkin that Russia may be European but not Western and Japan may be in the East but it is Western. @@edcottingham1 "Secular Christianity" is an okay start but it's also an oxymoronic fantasy. You either believe that Jesus is literally God's son and that he was crucified and resurrected for your sins or you don't. You have to make the conscious decision to put your faith in God's supernatural, metaphysical existence. It may seem fantastical on the surface but a fair, critical analysis proves its objective truth.

Oh, man, you nailed it! A "secular Christian" myself, I see everywhere how Christian messages have been turned to the work of destroying our culture. And this is not to criticize the messages (as GKC certainly does not) but to criticize the "madness" that some have turned them to. And I am not talking about deliberate evil schemers from outside of Christianity but the soft, muddle-brained havoc of so many sincere leaders within the faith (which I am sure is what GKC meant as well). What is happening to Christianity is exactly what has happened to classical liberalism, which it seems to me is rooted in Christian values.

Konstantin Kisin is absolutely right when he says we are responsible. When you study the events of the past 10 years objectively, wokeism, the islamization of Europe, the economic recession, the excesses of globalism, , the war in Ukraine etc.., one cannot deny that we are taken hostage by our own western principles on human rights, freedom of religion, guilt, globalism, etc... For example : yes, racism and Islamophobia are wrong but the two may not be mixed together, shouldn't we protect the fight against these dangers against abuse. Why allow the islamization of our societies to grow because there is such a thing as racism? Why let muslims impose islam in the name of freedom of religion? Shouldn't this freedom be protected as well? Since when are rights allowed to be enjoyed without fulfilling our duties? Democracy has become a caricature of itself because leftists, liberals and ecologists are forcing us to accept islam with it's negative aspects without protecting western civilization. People are being pushed into a corner in such a way that anti-social behavior and violence will be the only means as to get out of that corner.. The press, media and traditional politics who seem to have lost their moral compass, the moral compass that till the end 80's guided them to common sense in the general interest, they are the ones who will be responsible for the coming mess but they will, as usual, blame the citizens who care about their countries, about the future of their childeren and grandchildren, they will put the blame on fascism and nationalism without realizing their own responsibility.. We must never forget the Christian - Judeo foundation of Western civilization and respect that, demanding that guests in our countries also respect this, our values, standards and principles. Nothing wrong with Christian based compassion and guilt but we must not let anyone stretch these to the limits or be blinded by them.. About diversity : it is okay as long as it does not come at the cost of our freedom, democracy, social security systems, identity civilization..

@@wavell14 Good question.. It's not wrong when muslims impose their religion and have bad intentions.. Islam is dangerous in the way it is interpreted, when young muslims twist all aspects if their lives around islam, it's proof of not being integrated and a threat to our existence.. But when a muslim living in your street who goes to work everyday, not imposing his religion on anyone, just minding his own business, should he be feared? Though, I think I understand you. Too many of them just want islam to expand and who can be trusted? A contract system is what I would implement : make everybody sign a contract stipulating cooperation with society. Agreeing that not respecting the laws, values, etc.., results in willingly leaving Europe and the UK together with a certain amount of family members. Muslims who really respect us and are an added value to society should be properly and positively treated. It's a matter of being direct, clear about what you expect of citizens, correct, honest and especially consequent.

@@wavell14 WW3 has broken out a long time ago, it's just not as easy to comprehend like WW2.. But, yes you have a point. That is why I'm in favor of preventive measures like having citizens sign contracts. If the muslim communities complain and point "the finger in the direction of racism and discrimination", we can remind them of the duties foreigners have i. The Middle-east..and what happens to for example africans who, sometimes, are expelled by the hundreds from countries like qatar, saudi-arabia etc..just because the governments want to expell them. The holding of religious ceremonies other than islam is forbidden in saudi-arabia. Isn't mecca one of the 3 most important things in the lives of muslims? The quran, their prophet and mecca.. You know our problem is that we Europeans, westerners want to discuss about and analyze everything, find answers.. This is of course a result of the evolution the Christian foundation went through and a positive evolution if I may say. But when it comes to islam it's a waste of precious time.. Muslims have a total different logic which is heavily influenced by islam. Every aspect of their lives, work, economy, household, marriage, sex, the interaction with non-muslims, it is all soaked in islam so in a sense, technically speaking, islam is 100 % not compatible with western civilization.. Islamic countries have simple, strict rules and the authorities are consequent, (although corruption is rampant in many places!). Therefore it would make life a lot more easier if the west would do the same: no ostensible religious practises, no hijabs in schools, no double nationalities meaning no appropriation of the host country's nationality. In yemen or some other gulf country foreign pregnant women are not allowed to give birth in the country but must go abroad. They are allowed to go back but their child can't get the yemeni or uae (?) nationality.. If we would be more protective about our identity, (without being racist but by being formal and through procedures legitimized by law, so the law applying to every foreign national), then Islamophobia wouldn't exist or at least to a muche lesser extent.. Muslims do respect laws when they are applied consequently with the needed judicial enforcement = a contract which must be signed. If anybody starts nagging about it, we simply can point out that a contract is a contract. Don't want to sign it: off you go.. 🛫..., thank you for visiting our country! But as I pointed out earlier, the leftist-liberal-green block, is holding us hostage by our own principles.. To counter that they must be confronted with the negative results of their decisions : grooming gangs, islamic terror attacks, the terror attacks in sub-saharan Africa (we get confronted with pictures of african babies with swollen stomachs due to malnutrition without pointing out that the african governments mismanage their own countries, corruption, tribalism, islamic radicalism, too many babies, superstition, etc...all problems for which they are responsible themselves..the colonization period is not the cause of things that have been going in for centuries.. Why not confront the public, especially the lefto baboons with the atrocities muslims commit in africa with....yes, european money acquired through EU subsidies, money given to turkey to support syrian refugees starting from 2016 but strangely enough many of those refugees had to pay rent and but food with money sent to them from family living in safe syrian zones.. What happened to the nearly 5 billion euro turkey received from the EU!?

And how they were built using little more than hammers and chisels (not forgetting manpower) is even more remarkable. As an atheist, I prefer to define myself as a 'Christian Atheist' for exactly the reasons described in this excellent video. Christianity is so embedded in our culture that those of us of a certain generation are simply engulfed by it, for the better morally and ethically, obviously. Young and future generations will lose so much if our culture is allowed to become disengaged with Christianity, and sadly, I see overwhelming evidence that this is so.

Although I was convinced at an early age that Abrahamic religions were nonsense in their core metaphysical claims and the fables through which they narrate the story of mankind, I have always accepted that Christianity, in particular, was central to the "soul" of the West. And I have accepted that Christianity has had great utility in giving people the confidence to "get on with life." But I've had only a few, vague ideas about ~how~ , exactly, it managed this shaping of the Western mind, including the secular, Western mind. I found this episode of "The West" to be like drinking from a firehose on that topic. It was, to me, intensely stimulating and intellectually exciting. Am I certain that everything said here was spot-on? No, but I have no particular criticisms on first hearing; I just have so very much to think about and consider. As a Bible - believing , born again Christian, I can’t help but be disappointed that the ‘Christianity’ presented in this video is purely and solely Roman Catholicism, with its saints ( the Bible tells us that all believers are saints , not just a special few , relics and adoration of Mary. These have nothing to do with the true Church as portrayed in the Bible. The only way society and cultures can be changed for the good is for the preaching of the life- changing gospel of Christ to reach out to people. Also, let’s not forget that God first chose Israel to be custodians of His word (OT) and gave them and us the Ten Commandments.

The very first music is Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave/Hebrides Overture. It was also the very beginning of the first episode, giving way in both episodes, of course, to Beethoven. I believe that the Mendelssohn is somewhat more lengthy in the first episode. This episode was replaying in the background as I typed, and the Mendelssohn comes in again at about 9:03. "Haunting" is exactly the word, imo, too! (I am no great student of music. I happened to know this little bit, because sixty years ago, my father, who had very little interest in music, subscribed us to a Time-Life series of boxed sets, each on a separate period of classical music. Mendelssohn was part of the Romantic period. I loved this piece and, well, it "haunted" me. So glad that someone else noticed!)

“Hard to be a Christian when you believe in evidence-based science, rather than blind faith” Not really only thing that makes it hard to be a Christian is love of one’s sin. This can be seen in great thinkers in this movement by Tom Holland and Douglas Murray. They may claim science or something else, but deep down it is truly the love of the sin of perversion and lust.

@@Shevytruck6 Sin is in all of us, Faith as a virtue , i e piety and running our way as St Paul did his requires saying No to sin I agree. However, there is another thing here, our education at home and at school should explain a few things in a very detailed manner about science, history, Christian theology. Otherwise it does not sink in to most people. On science Vs faith my favourite is for instance, Mr Polkinghorne, For a detailed presentation, one good example is: BTW God exists, Luca the first cell.

I see what you mean, but allow me to draw your attention to talks on science Vs faith by Mr Polkinghorne. Plenty of other good ones: Swinburne, Trent Horn,.... Or the archeolog Paul Maier , the real Jesus. Animations by "reasonable faith", William Lane Craig is also a good start for an assessment. Atheist claims are more difficult to believe in even if someone is agnostic, because they reject meaning and purpose of the Universe and it's beings. Furthermore, leading atheists also admit the primacy of information over substance, when they claim their personality is the result of a computation and could be translated to a machine in principle. In this sense materialism is dead, if it was ever living.

I sincerely hope the episode on rule of law goes into detail at the supreme luck of the West, specifically the English-speaking world, at having such brilliant lawgiver princes such as Henry II, Roger II, and Frederick II whose collective genius continues to form the abiding glory of the Western world. There’s a reason why English legalism has proved THE determining factor of Western democracy and why from infertile historical soil rule of law does not grow.

Your comment may have been filtered to one side by the algorithm, perhaps. Another problem is that if you are typing your message while the video ends, and another starts playing then your message can appear on the latter video rather than the one you intended. No the basis of Christianity is acknowledging I (you) am a sinner, believe in the Lord Jesus as Saviour and Lord, change my mindset to be renewed in the Word and let that Word begin to frame our thinking. Out of this we would do works of obedience to God rather than the more humanistic 'make the world a better place' which although true, would be a by product of my relationship with God.

I watched the first installment which was a good overview. Then I watched the second installment of the Western civilization series and it was a fanfare to Christianity while treating it with kids gloves about all the negative issues, not once mentioning the Inquisition, nor the dark/middle ages. As much as they praised Christianity for producing marriages out of love or choice, not arrangement, as a positive from the church, they didn't talk about Protestants or any alternatives. There was only one interviewee who mentioned Judaism as a precursor to Christianity, and almost nothing about the Greeks. Also, this is very Anglo-centric. How's about a series that teaches from a broad perspective of truth and reality, rather than with an ideological agenda? Overall, I'm trying to take in the facts, but need to navigate heavily around the propaganda. I came to this channel from a video sent to me about a discussion of the West's ideals as an overall positive and better than alternatives, so I was hoping that this series would continue that notion. Nonetheless, I'm going to finish the series.
