Gentle Giant - Peel The Paint (Official Video)
Taken from the 1972 album 'Three Friends'
www.gentlegiantband.com
Directed by Noah Shulman
Artwork by Matthew Lanci
Additional Animation by Ronald Rabideau
Lyrics:
Free from the start
Left to depart
Finding the pleasure and the pain in his art
Lost in the hush
No need to rush
Time waits for him, him who creates with the brush
Colour the brush
High in the air
His dreams are there
Searching for answers he will look everywhere
Thinks he has won
A place in the sun
Free from the worries and the ways of everyone
Colour the brush
Peel the paint
Look underneath
You'll see the same, the same old savage beast
Strip the coats
The coats of time
And find mad eyes and see those sharpened teeth
Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall
Carnal grave
Crawling smooth
Open flesh and you must let him in
Glass reflects
What you are
It shows the face, the evil face of sin
Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall
Nothing's been learned
No nothing at all
Don't be fooled, get up before you fall

I like how half of the song is just the unique drum/guitar solo. And for those who didn't notice, the video was animated and directed by Noah Shulman, Derek's son.

That's cool to note! Malcolm Mortimore was my favorite of all their drummers, but only on this one album due to a motorcycle accident which side lined him for years. He came from, and went back to the jazz world. His timing and dynamics on this album are sublime.

I think my favourite bit is when Gary Green switches on the huge reverb about half way through his solo. You can hear the "click" of him stomping on whatever unit he was using. What gratifies me the most is the fact that they must of heard the noise in the control room and in the mixing etc. etc. but they left it in!! Genius. Best band ever.

And the coolest thing is they never sold out went commercial pop muzak like Genesis did and became boring meglomanics like Roger Waters who has ruined any admiration or positive feelings I had for him. His strident and obnoxious behavior believing he can'save the world' his concerts are like Nazi rallies with moronic politics, telling us what to think and who to vote for? He disappeared up his own ass and the ridiculous travesty that the Floyd in later years became was enough to ruin their legacy. Gentle Giant remained true to their vision and standard and one could argue that they didn't become big in America but they are actually remembered fondly. They didn't break up and reform as some completely different sound or weird trip like King Crimson did who released albums (post Discipline) that are at times so unlistenable and tedious (infact almost tortuous to listen to) as a fan one continually bought the crap until it was so obvious it sucked and then one day the guitarist is making curious videos with his untalented, insufferable, attention hound wife in bizarre costumes to promote staying home and being safe? Just another sellout in the agenda and social engineering and control. I could probably think of a few more bur I'll stop and again I absolutely enjoy listening to this prog classic and alas artists who don't make me cringe as people. I tip my hat to these Gentlemen Giants!

@@peterkeenan6382 Those 2 you mentioned had definitely cultivated a solid audience prior to their switch to more "pop" music. Firstly Garry plays mostly gibson guitars. Hendrix was mostly strat man. Secondly Hendrix helped develop many pedals notably the wha wha. Nobody used it better. Hendrix would not have fiitted GG even if he wanted to. Both very accomplished musicians , completely diffrent players. Hardly comparable. Nobody was comparable to Hendrix even the great immitators such as SRV. Hendrix generously sited Rory as the greatest electric guitarist. Again not really comparable. Everyone has a favourite, but is anyone really the best? its just fantastic that there so many awsome players across all genres

I can relate for the drum performance in some way, but the guitar play... I was hearing a bit of The Machine (I know The Machine is too much recent compared to Gentle Giant, I just had a glimpse of "It sounds a bit like") and Jimi Hendrix (King Crimson drummer technique that I agree, but I can add how Jimi Hendrix drummer had strange echoes here). The part when the violin plays makes me remniscent of 1970's album from Yes (one of the songs had some violin). Many echoes there and there and the part in 3/4 with a lot of keyboard was special to my ears: The drum sequence sounds almost like the Yes drummer in "Yours Is No Disgrace". Peel The Paint is just... marvelously great!!! EDIT: I read the lyrics and It really hits my artistic fiber to the core... espescially the following verses: "Nothing's been learned, no nothing at all And don't be fooled, get up before you fall" Diving in my imagination feels like it. It just mixes everything up as my introspection lacks meditation to prevent being affected by it. I often feel see me as a monster in some way and it's really just nothing about the Surface-me. The Dept-me is crafted by so many stimulias I should shake it off. Life really marks us in so many diversified ways. To try peeling its marks in us is a "Meditate-or-drown-in-it" case for sure... At least it's time to learn to not peel the paint too much! ;)
