While it's common to hear about babies needing sleep training, it's also common to need to sleep train toddlers and preschoolers as well. It's important to know that sleep training doesn't mean cry-it-out and sleep training toddlers can be a bonding and empowering experience for your child!
The great thing about sleep training toddlers is that toddlers can communicate with you WAY more than a baby can! You can explain things to them and they will understand your words and you won't feel like you're doing something TO your child, as much as you're doing something WITH your child. You're accomlishing this sleep goal TOGETHER.
There are some things that need to be done before sleep training toddlers. Things you need to prepare ahead of time:
1. Use bedtime routine cards! Having a visual routine will help your child go with the flow of the bedtime routine. This will help your child's body trigger the production of melatonin and get them all ready to settle into a full night of sleep.

2. Reward System: Encourage your child to stay in bed all night long. When they stay in bed until their Tot Clock turns yellow, they earn a sticker on their reward chart. Once their chart is full, they can have a special treat/prize.
3. Allow your child to make as many bedtime choices as possible. Which bathroom do they want to use? Which pajamas do they want to wear? Do they want to brush their teeth before you do it or do they want you to brush their teeth for them first?
4. Get a toddler clock! The My Tot Clock can be used throughout the day for many different things so your child will really be used to seeing this clock in the functioning of their daily lives.

5. Make sure your child's schedule is age appropriate. Some toddlers still need naps and some do not. It depends on how your child is behaving in the evening and at bedtime as well as if your child is still sleeping through the night and waking up between6-8am.

TODDLER SLEEP TRAINING METHODS:
1. "Chair in the Room" Method: Sitting next to your child's crib as they fall asleep and leaving the room once your child falls asleep at bedtime. Moving your position closer to the door as nights progress until you are sitting outside the door.
2. "The Kissing Game": Laying your child down to bed and giving your child kisses intermittently as they stay in bed and lay quietly until they fall asleep.
3. "The Bedtime Pass": Creating a physical "pass" for your child to use ONE TIME each night. Your child can choose one thing they want to get out of bed for. This might be one more hug or a drink of water or a potty break. Once your child has used the pass, keep the pass for the rest of the night and let your child know that s/he may not get out of bed again until morning.

Would the tot clock affect hes sleep which is already by distractions easily. A nightlight kept him awake so would the clock do more bad than good even though I'm doing the 730pm to 7am regardless. I tell him after he wakes up at 5 go back to sleep and I'll get him when its time to wakw up. He mostly makes it without me on hea floor but in need of advice cause my 2 yr old strong willed tot is having daily meltdowns of overtiredness

If a nightlight wakes him up, I'd recommend the Hatch so you can change the nightlight color to red, which doesn't stimulate the brain. Then you can have it change to green at 7am! Reinforce the colors with a reward system when he stays in bed the whole night!

Are these applicable for a 12 month old? The clock? The choices? He isn’t really able to do those things or understand those things yet so am I employing them as habitual items that he will come to understand?

My toddler does great at falling asleep in his room our problem is when he wakes up in the middle of the night he will cry until I get him and he needs me to fall back asleep. Any suggestions for that?

100% use a toddler clock + a reward system that makes sense. I help families with this every day, so please don't hesitate to set up a consultation!

I have a 4 year old who is great with all the steps but then starts to cry hysterically when they are over . We stay with her l while she essentially cries herself to sleep but it is the exact opposite of what we want How do we get her to stop the hysterics after all the routines ?

What is she communicating? Why does she say she's crying?

The bedtime routine cards? This link: slumberandbloom.com/product/bedtime-routine-cards/ You don't need to put in your address. You should be able to leave that blank. I don't use it for anything!

Great tips for kiddos who are 2 years plus but there is no way my 18 month old has the comprehension for most of this. More time explaining the chair method would be great for those with younger toddlers
