Alessandro Bormioli yeah I count slides as part of his chest range. His lowest “held” note is F#1, although he’s reached E1 and D1 while sliding down. Which is why I put “F#1 (D1)” at the end :)

HerringHome It’s still kinda hard to hear, but I think I might hear it. You’re right, it’s very brief so I’m not too sure. The odd thing is Geoff said he has no recorded chest F#’s out there, which makes me contemplate wether it would be chest or not.

Ale Bormio I don’t recall which specific vocal range video I saw but there is a live performance of Tim singing “Your Man” and the last note is a F#1, however they were all a little flat and he slide JUST a little further and sustained an F1... not saying it’s 100% perfect or clean however! Whatever anyone’s lowest chest note is, they can usually stretch a touch lower at times

@@StylezOnline I've seen that video too, and yes it's surely a F1, but I no longer think it's chest: I think growl, fry or more probably chest-fry, simply he was close to the microphone. But yes, obviously there are no solid rules, but Avi and Tim's lowest chest notes is G1 and Geoff F#1

Ale Bormio Agreed with “countable” yes! But I don’t feel it was growl because it was a clean slide down to the note, but it’s possibly it’s some chest-fry stuff going but in time I feel it could be possible from any of the singers

Cole Fountain He chest frys some of his notes to add more power to them. For example listen to his A1 at 3:43 and 3:50. The A1 at 3:43 is chest because it sounds smooth and soft. The next A1 at 3:50 sounds more projected and not as smooth which tells me he is adding fry to that note.

Justin Jones I wouldn’t call it chest fry. It’s more like strohbass (supported chest voice) to make it more powerful, rather than chest mixed with fry.

@@justinjones4269 Variations in smoothness make for a poor heuristic when deciding on a vocal register. What you point out as the result of adding fry was in fact a difference in cord closure which, believe it or not, can be controlled throughout one's modal range with enough training. I never understood why so many people assume that chest voice has to sound airy down there. It has no grounding in how the vocal folds operate. What looks to amateurs (and high-voiced males) like an inescapable compromise one has to make in order to sing low is merely a stylistic choice to most professional true basses

@@colefountain1030 The thing is, even though the connection stays down there clearly, the actual chest voice (M1 larynegal vibratory mechanism) is just not possible below like a low A, and that's already pushing it. There have been studies done on it before and they confirmed that most basses are already shifting into a completely different coordination around a D above that. Which is what I'm hearing with Geoff. It's very well-done though, and I wouldn't call it fry. But I wouldn't call it chest either.

Kaji I’ve thought about that myself. But I don’t know what else to call it besides chest voice because it’s so close to chest and it’s not completely vocal fry. I definitely do hear the difference between Geoff’s F2 and C2. But it’s commonly called full voice or chest voice, so that’s what I’m going by.

@@colefountain1030I do think modal/full voice works quite well for this as those terms are not really only used for chest voice/belt. Some people use them for very well-connected head notes as well (the Disney princess-y type of head voice).

Kaji Herringhome made a video about Avi and Geoff Full Voice Comparison, so it could have something to do with this. However, even a sustained chest (so not under the definition of “full voic “) remains chest, so the chest notes in this video are right
