Nicarag-whaaaaa? Yep It's here. Volcanoes, Poetry, Ghost women, and a very...intense form of Spanish spoken here. Find out in this episode... #Nicaragua!! Thanks to all the Nicaraguan geograpeeps that helped with this one! Gracias por su ayuda y espero que disfruten este video!
I like Nicaraguans they're like the Irish of the Latin world they curse a lot ,they've been through some tough times, they love having fun and they looooooove drinking
Future Quagmire Im Mexican and until very recently I found out Guatemala and Nicaragua were not part of Mexico, i've met a few Guatemalans and Nicaraguans in school and the entire time I actually thought both countries were just states of Mexico :/
The food, the landsights, the people. One of the most beautiful countries of the world! Much love to my fellow Nicaraguans from your Salvadoran friend! 🇳🇮 🇸🇻
I've been to about half the places mentioned in this video and I can definitely say Nicaragua is probably the most fun country I've ever been to. Love from Canada!
@@scintillam_dei My friends went to Honduras once and got gang rob. They stole everything. I rather hear cussing and see someone get middle finger than lose all my things Lol
@@lordmango545 not catalonia. Hes saying Unregoignized nations thats not in the UN such as Taiwan, Kosovo, South Ossetia, ex. Catalonia is trying to gain indepedence from Spain but its not recognized by any nations.
@@nana-vt4hb I believe nicaraguan youtubers aren't that popular or we don't pay much attention to them, which is sad! Uno nunca es profeta en su tierra.
As a Nicaraguan, I appreciated this video very much. Clearly a lot of love was put into this. Though your mispronunciations made me cringe very slightly. Also thanks for featuring my tio Eddy!
Eh, I gather he was raised in California, you cant really call our Spanish pronunciations to be good, esp when most of us call every immigrant here Mexican (it can be very sensitive saying that here tho).
Actually Nicaraguans are not the only ones who don't pronounce their d's and s's, we (Chileans), Argentinians, and many other countries from the Caribbean omit those phonemes as well. People say my accent is one of the most incomprehensible just because we say either "weá", "weón", "culiáo", or "conchetumare" per three words, apart from some notable intonation and pronunciation differences. In fact, the phrase "oh wn, el wn wn, wn" makes sense in Chile.
I'm a Catholic Geograpeep, and I believe La Griteria is to celebrate the feast day of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, not the Assumption. The celebration happens on December 7th, like an "Immaculate Conception Eve," similar to Christmas, before the global feast day on December 8th. The feast day of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is August 15th. Great show you guys. I enjoy watching your show every week. Keep up the good work!
I am from Nicaragua and what your saying is correct. We walk around the neighborhood house to house singing songs about La Virgen María and we get stuff in return like toys and fruits
@Lazy Greek Stereotype Most of Latin American countries have a mayoritary population of catholics. The thing is that in Nicaragua the culture and folklore is deeply rooted within their people.
The real name is "Nican Atl Nahuac", which means "Here Surrounded by Water" named by Nahuatl and last point of the Nahuas. The Nicaraos came from the Pipil tribe that came from the Nahuatl which are the Aztecs. Mayans came also, built settlements as well as the Chibchas, Caribs from the south and Colombia. The Mayans named an specific mount corridor "Amerrique" (land of the wind) with plenty of gold in it that caught Columbus and Vespucci's eye, later became a point of reference and Vespucci changed his name from Alberto to Amerigo to later rumors of gold in Europe that came from the Mount Amerrique on the Amerrisque corridor located in Nicaragua´s back bone to later the point of reference came know as America in French Ports at that time according to various authors.
So you are telling to me that we salvadorans are even realated with the nahualt roots? Dude thats amazing i din't knew that, i hope your homeland gets out of the problems they're having right now Fuerza a Nicaragua!
@@deadcat1550 That's why El Salvador has a good relationship with Nicaragua, we have a native tribe in common (the Pipils), same national colors, coat of arms, and national bird!
Finally someone with the BASIC knowledge about the name of the country.... Here's my shortest possible version IT'S NÁHUATL... a prehispanic language spoken by tthe Mayans... This is no state secret and yet people still get it wrong!
The europeans discovered Nicaragua in 1520's and Columbus died in 1506 and Vespucci in 1512, how's that possible? Vespucci was named after his grandfather 'Amerigo' who died in 1468
As for someone like me that is half Nicaragüense but is mostly raised on my Puerto Rican side, it makes me happy and emotional to see things and history about Nicaragua. Since I wasn’t raised much around it.
I visited Nicaragua last fall. I stayed in Leon for a few days and I absolutely loved it. It was my last stop during my central America land road trip. Coming from Tegucigalpa Honduras Leon felt like a saint! Lol But I know this part of the world has crazy conflict Nicaragua is not as bad as the media makes it seem. I visited central America during the Independence Sept 15 holidays and didn't even know about it Which made my experience more cooler. They are some very prideful countries. Definitely didn't know about the Garifunas east coast carribean sea nicarguans until now. I'll go back someday! 🇳🇮🙌🏾
Glad you guys finally did an episode on Nicaragua. Some mistakes here and there e.i Granada not Grenada. Great video. I especially liked how you mentioned is a pretty safe country. You missed the drink cacao (chocolate drink) and tge fact that we also go by Nicas. Thank you for the video.

Amazing video, Barbs... I know is quite difficult to condense all history and geography in 16 mins, but you do a great work... Plus, you got the pinolero essence 😍
As a Panamanian i Loved that Central América Intro. Also weird fact, that amount of active volcanoes in Nicaragua is one of the reasons why the Panama Canal was built in Panama. That Momotombo Volcano Stamp helped to make that decision.
Being an avid baseball fan, I am so happy you mentioned Dennis Martinez in this video. I've watched him pitch. I feel that it's fitting that he, the first Nicaraguan in Major League Baseball, the first Nicaraguan to throw a perfect game, was mentioned.
My dad is from Nicaragua. He immigrated to the US due to protests and the Danto 88 operation. I have pride in where i am from, and even though I've never been, I still have family over there. My heart goes to the protestors. Much love from the emo punk rock Nicaraguensë in Chicago!!
My family is from Mexico but ive become really interested in Nicaragua thanks to baseball. Started watching their leagues and noticed theres alot similarities between the country and Sinaloa the state my fam comes from. Baseball is king, listen to mexican music, ppl love their food, being loud, and having fun. Would love to visit Managua and Corn Islands some day.
We have destroyed 20 million acres of tropical rain and mountain forests (and all the "biodiversity" that you are supposing to protect) in favor of a low producing-contaminating agriculture/cattle raising just in the last 60 years.
Yes, an interoceanic canal was the grand project of the Central American Federation since its formation. It would have set them ahead many decades, give them relevance in the world and economic boost. The republic would have lived if politicians hadn't destroyed their dreams.
is a beautiful name for Nicaragua when you called the new jersey of central america , but would you tell me why you putted this beautiful name to Nicaragua ??? Only i want to know your answer my friend , peace, health and love for you, buddy !!!
I'm from Costa Rica and my episode was in the early days when it wasn't so good. Although because Nicaragua and CR are so similar I'm so happy by this episode!!! (As a Costa Rican the first part and the address were 100% legit).
Of course. Garifuna people exist all throughout "Central" America. Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, etc. I'm sure even the black people in Mexico are loosely related to them. The spanish and Portuguese brought alotta those people from the same tribes and sprinkled them throughout the continent.
They also use the dollar! Nicaragua is known for their coffeeeee, especially in the Nuevo Sergovia region! Beautiful country! Just like how costa ricans are ticos, it's nicas for nicaragua!! 😊
My mom is from Nicaragua, I have also been to Nicaragua, it is true that your own family members cuss you out lol. During the revolution period in the 70s, a lot of young teens were forced by the Sandino army to fight. The teens who could afford and leave the country before they were taken did, such as my uncle. There is a lot of controversy in Nicaraguan history.
@@scintillam_dei Nicaraguans ARE multi talented intellectual people. The Spanish/ castellano you speak now is the modernization of Rubén Dario. This has already been stated by the Spanish empire. He modernize their OWN language. But of course you are just the common average person with basic knowledge. So I am not surprise that you know anything about it. You are just a walking fool. A clown perhaps.
From a Nicaraguan: first, some mistakes: you wrote "Grenada" instead of "Granada" for the city picture, otherwise pretty accurate about directions hahaha, great episode overall!! many thanks guys.
Sabías que El Salvador y Nicaragua estaban en guerra, el Salvador estaba ganando pero los otros países dijeron a los Salvadoreños que para de empujar a los Nicaragüense
Is not technically land locked since the San Juan river connects the Lake Nicaragua to the Atlantic ocean, that's how the sharks ended up in the lake making their way through the San Juan river to the lake and pirates used it as a entrance to raid cities like Granada in the past.
@@karinaanabellramirezcarcam9601 Hi Karina Anabelle, that is so crazy that you have seen our videos, thanks for watching! We felt so lucky to have been able to live in your wonderful country. Amazing people, unique culture and breathtaking natural beauty!🤩 We miss it so much!
He meant like the people there will either be your best friend or your worst enemy without much wiggle room, and also kinda potty-mouthed or something along those lines
Also did not mention that the International Court of Justice ruled in favor of Nicaragua in 1986, deciding that the US needed to pay reparation for the damages caused during that period. After US objections, UN Security Council and General Assembly sided again with Nicaragua, but US has still not paid up. For the full story, search "Nicaragua V United States"
The 1979 revolution was actually a coup d etat against a regime that was making the country rich. That overthrow of government was illegal and backed by large neighboring countries that hate the US. The junta of the 1980s was a criminal organization just like now Daniel Ortega has shown.
I always thought that the contras were Americans that disguised themselves with high tech masks as little Nicaraguans. They probably even learned the way Nicaraguans speak Spanish. I saw the movie Mission Impossible.
Gallo pinto or gallopinto is a traditional dish of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, consisting of rice and beans as a base. Gallo pinto has a long history and is important to various Latin American cultures. The beans in gallo pinto are quickly cooked until the juice is almost consumed, then combined with readied rice, and other ingredients such as cooked bell peppers, chopped onions, and garlic.
@@youtubecommentreview4642 I agree. There is debate about which country coined that dish's name. There is no "Gallo" in Gallo pinto per se. So for a non-Costa Rican/ Nicaraguan person ordering something that may have chicken in its name, is grossly a misnomer. is like saying "French Fries" but you get deep fried Cucumber Slices German Style!
Tip Toe what colour would that be? Im talking about gallo pinto for its namesake because it has the word “gallo” in it. It is disappointed to a non-central American because you don’t get any “rooster” at all. It is a veggie dish.
And Belize is like the English-speaking foreign adoptee of the family that gets along well with the others, even trying to speak Spanish to get along with his brothers
@@cupidsproblem3915 Coolio. Did you like the video on Nicaragua though? And I believe, no pun intended, the same can be said for Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname for South America's family
When I lived in Belize, I spoke English and was taught Spanish. When I moved from Belize to the United States, I spoke in a really bad Belizean accent. I then learned to speak American English and I took Spanish in high school.
They don't consider themselves as Central American or part of the rest of those countries because their spoken language is English they developed a different culture because of that.
Yeah, many people who I have told that I am from Belize think that Belize is a Hispanic country. The only reason it isn’t is because the first language is English (Belizean creole) not Spanish.
Awesome video as always! I've been to ometepe island in 2014 and it was incredible and practically untouched. We even walked on the runway of the airport that was not yet finished. I wonder what it's like today...
Pues llegaron muchos turistas pero en lugar de estar en hoteles simplemente se integraron a la vida diaria de los pueblos como moyogalpa y el país intenta afrontar lo malo con actitud positiva
I’ve been to Granada and it was beautiful. Also got to visit Apoyo Lagoon and a Masaya volcano on the way back to Costa Rica. When I was at the Costa Rican border, there was loads of African immigrants in tents made of bin bags trying to get into Nicaragua 🇳🇮
0:08 For those who don't know and to save your time googling (LTR): Costa Rica, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador
Great doco, and love watching other countries, especially these that have such a cultural difference. At Geerlings Digital Moments we have the same pride in our early history in Australia, so different to what people expect. Keep up the great work.
Sadly the Costa Rica x Nicaragua relationship is not like that (at least with the government) many people in the power are even mirroring Trump's treatment to Latinos, saying nicaraguan's only bring problems and debt to the government because they do not pay taxes nor medical treatment, is a tight up situation, and very controversial tbh
@@francolopez2460 Ortega betrayed the revolution. Si conoces la historia de Nicaragua sabrás q Daniel Ortega es un asesino. Sandino no tiene nada que ver con el FSLN, los ORTEGUISTAS manipularon su imagen. Nicaragua has a DICTATORSHIP.
Matias D.Carpio what? Being the 2nd poorest country of Latam, that chit chat is completely out of context, Socialism is the ruin of the countries i don’t see people going to Venezuela or Cuba massively.
Matias D.Carpio those countries are not “socialist” at least me as a Nicaraguan it is not about ideas, after 500 dead (including 2 friends of mine) more than 700 political prisoners, 50,000+ refugees, no freedom, no democracy, no human rights, the gov has build an empire and they are rotten in money.....there is no “project” made by Ortega that compensates all the lives that we lost including children, a Brazilian doctor, students....
It is ridiculously funny but true; no addresses they go by point of reference. This is an amazingly informative video, I probably knew (2%) of the history prior to watching it. Thanks for sharing, RockOn!!!
I was 18 years old and doing research in Nicaragua in Managua when the Earthquake hit that caused much death and destruction. Howard Hughes was living there at the time in the Penthouse of the Intercontinental Hotel which looked like a pyramid with a boxcar on top. He flew in bulldozers and earth moving equipment for relief work with one requirement. His plane had to be the first one to leave the Airport . We drove out and flew home from Honduras. Quite the adventure !
