Geoguessr: Interesting Photospheres in Obscure Countries #4 [PLAY ALONG]

It's been 2 weeks, so here's a biggy for the geoguessr heads.
It's the map that never fails to perplex and intrigue. My best score of 19,785 is there to beat, but will it be one curveball two many this week? If you haven't played along yet, it is time.
PLAY ALONG: Play your round, put your marker down, then switch tabs back to RU-vid to watch my attempt and the result. This way you don't ruin the game or the video!

Kigali really threw off Tom and I was rooting hard for him to get it right & almost screaming my screen. Anyway, the street maps on Geoguessr for Africa are mostly outdated by about 15 years and those places look completely different today so keep this in mind when playing photospheres. Also Kigali is a bit of a smaller city in just East Africa alone so don't write off African cities based on skylines...you'll be surprised.

The Only way you got Tibet round right is by knowing either the Chinese or Japanese language and knowing the word “西藏” means "Tibet" 14:58, otherwise, it would be difficult. It is easy to tell it is somewhere in China due to the mandatory front and back blue plate with the white font (and only blue unless a special purpose vehicle), It consists of a Chinese letter upfront, with a Latin letter ( And if the letter is A means most important city in the region indicated by the Chinese letter province abbr., B is the second-largest city in that province, etc), then a White dot and then follow either number or Latin letter combinations. This plate is very different than Japanese (you could search for Japanese license plates and Korean and Taiwan etc, it is very hard to confuse with any other Asian pacific countries.) Other hints may be a typical 3 flag pole (if you see big flag poles, it almost has to be three in China, one for the national flag, one for CCP, and one for whatever you intended to hang (for instance the flag for the hotel). If no the two mandatory flags hanging, you are likely to be getting into unwanted trouble by just hanging the hotel flag. Other hints may be the mandatory "green (and green only) color of construction protective sheet" in China. That Tibet in is actually a getable location for Chinese or Japanese, but only because we can read the letter Tibet follow by the letter A next to it, then it has to be somewhere in Lhasa.

I went to that very musuem - it was so sad and moving. I had the great pleasure of visiting Rwanda with my job about 10 years ago. A good way to differentiate Roman and Hellenistic ruins is the usage of archways, bricks and round shapes. Ancient Greek buildings generally don’t use brick or have arches, while Roman ones do. The one you see in the picture is a so-called triumphal arch, which were monuments the Romans built in honor of the emperor in regions they conquered. They are specifically Roman and the Greeks never built them (nor did any other ancient civilization). Hope this bit of random trivia helps you next time!

I enjoy these a lot! Keep 'em coming! Round 1 - Knew this was Suriname by the flag and .sr clue straight away. I am native in Dutch so I could read all the text on the 'Lelydorp Villa' sign on the house. The address of the place was actually on there. It said 'Ta ... {something something} ... weg', with 'weg' meaning 'road'. So I went looking for that in Lelydorp, and found 'Tawajari weg', with a police station on it. I figured the police station was probably the same as the firefighter's station in this small of a place, so I went for the house just left of it on the road that would make sense with the layout of the buildings and roads. I also assumed the compass was wrong, because... well, why would it be right, I mean come on. 5000 points Round 2 - What on earth? '... in obscure countries', so I guess I'll go for an obscure country? Nothing to go off of here. Could be Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Mongolia even? I took a wild guess and went Uzbekistan, zoomed in and clicked on the very first monument thing I could find. Well, I completely misjudged that, and for some reason I didn't even think of the Roman empire and algeria/tunisia. 241 points Round 3 - I think that's Chinese writing? I am not too informed on the differences between the older Japanese scripts and Mandarin. The English text next to the supposedly-Chinese text is throwing me off. Maybe Hong Kong? I considered Macao, but I don't think that's considered a country by many places, and I don't think that'll be right. I'll go just north of Hong Kong city. Ah yeah, cool. 1241 points Round 4 - Saw the Afghanistan flag instantly, so I'll go smack in the middle of Kabul. It looks kind of mountainous enough for it to be Kabul. Not like I care about 50 points more or less at this point, lol. And I'm not about to scan the entire country for 'Salik photography', no thanks. 4730 points, yep, that'll do Round 5 - I think that's the flag of Gabon? Shit, I've forgotten some international flags that I used to know by heart. I'm quite confident it might be Gabon. I'll have a search for 'Kwibuka' or something. The Gazprom logo to the left of the text is... odd, though... I'll go in the middle of Libreville, because I can't find anything better. The hills don't seem to make sense, nor does the fact that this place seems quite well-off, and I don't think Gabon is... It's also a little too tropical for my liking. OH WELL, LIBREVILLE IT IS 1338 points. Rwanda! Of course.... wait, what? Total = 12,550 points. ggwp

"Kabouterbos.. definitely some old language that still got an influence here" It's actually perfectly modern Dutch. :) Kabouter = gnome, bos = forest. But yeah, kabouter doesn't sound very Germanic. Nothing indigenous in any case. The Dutch nicked the island from the Spanish in 1634.

Looks like those cars are used as training props for fireman to do extractions and put out fires. I've seen similar at airports with cutaway planes/helicopters near the fire stations. Love this channel btw. Found it at random a while back and have enjoyed it. You introduced me to this game as well.

10,710 pts I got extremely lucky with the first round. I went to suriname(from the .sr on the firetruck) and zoomed it on Lelydorp. 2. I guessed in Libya. 3. I thought maybe Taipei, 4. Maybe Uzbekistan, though I should have maybe backed off due to the lack of cyrillic and more latin characters. 5. I had no clue except South pacific.

For number two, the easiest way to distinguish Greek from Roman architecture is when you see "brick and mortar" type of building. That tends to be Roman. The greeks did have brickwork, but the Romans integrated it much more in their architecture.

When Tom mentioned the guy's name on that Timgad round, I was really proud because I thought he was gonna point out it was a Maghrebi Arabic name. I died a little inside when he then said 'Mouad Boumoud' sounded distinctly Iranian (a notably non-arab country). Still a great video, apart from the Rwanda round 😬
