I disagree completely. The whole point of "protected rights", is that they can very much be taken away, easily so. Nothing needs to be protected unless it is in danger of being taken. The starting principle is that people have their lives taken, their voices silenced, and their person violated in every society all the time. To say we believe life, freedom of speech, and bodily autonomy are rights is to recognize that fact; and then, argue that we should all work together to bring that to an end permanently. That we should structure and restructure our legal system to protect these easily taken things. The only reason to have something like a legal system, is to deal with the fact that the most important things are easily destroyed or stolen.

@Stewie Griffin I'm not sure why you think typing in all caps, almost exactly what Carlin said in the bit, is going to change my mind. I love Carlin, he was amazing and most of what he said in this bit is spot on. He's wrong about the nature rights. From the beginning we've defined rights as things that shouldn't ever be taken from people, but frequently are. Pointing to evidence of them being taken and saying , "this is proof we have not rights" makes no sense. What you are describing is the proof that current body politic is corrupt and should be ousted. You are describing evidence that the average rank and file voter should be using every tool at our disposal to organize and systematically unseat most if not all current incumbents, especially at the local level. If you doubt that is possible, you should simply examine what hard core conservatives have managed to do with the judiciary. At the turn of the century, the American judges and many local legislatures were overwhelmingly liberal. Certain conservative groups decided to get laser focused on changing that. They organized and planned and now 21 years later we see the result. They control a critical number of local legislatures and the Supreme court, which leaned liberal for most of my life, will be immovably conservative for decades to come. Actually look into this. They didn't do it through bribery and chicanery. They didn't have to, because while they were researching their political opponents and studying their losses, liberals were busy virtue signaling and congratulating themselves hollow toothless political gestures, that changed nothing enduring. What we are seeing today doesn't even kind of invalidate the concept of rights as laid out in the constitution. What we are seeing is a lot of good reasons, for everyone to get much more involved and informed than they actually are. When was the last time you called everyone you know together to talk about the future of city, county, and state legislatures? Do you know who those individuals are, and which ones vote for the things you care about and which ones betray you over and over. If you don't know these things, if you haven't done these things, where do you get off saying the system is broken. It's like declaring a call won't start without ever turning the key.

One thing I've come to do from watching his stuff is to question everything. Even if what I'm questioning isn't something where logic really applies, still think logically about it. Too many people just blindly follow and believe what they're told, something that Carlin has covered, and so if I don't have proof of something I like to question it. Hell even when I do get proof of things you still have to question it at times, because not everything you see is going to be the truth. I think too many people in this world get caught up in a more close-minded way of looking at things, either by choice or because it's what they were pushed into, but for me Carlin has helped me to be more open minded and to view things from as many angles as possible.

We get so wrapped up in everyday politics that we tend to forget that the pubs and dems both work for the same team: the state. They're both taking our money and our rights. All the state wants is control, no matter how it comes their way. Case in point: *Ronald Reagan* rolled out some of our country's most egregious gun control laws when he was governor of California. Why, you may ask? Because the Black Panthers were armed and ready, and God knows we can't have organized groups of black people who are armed and willing to defend themselves at all costs (heavy sarcasm). The political parties abandon their principles all the time.

Not just in the United States, but EVERYWHERE. And you seeing the humor AND the reality of his monologues would be the far greater happiness, than that you were still watching his comedy. George really just wanted to use humor to wake people up to the world they live in, and always hoped that anything he might say could make people think even a little bit more than they normally do, and always hoped that he could wake in the people of the United States a movement to begin to tear down the injustice that is heaped upon the people every day.

One comic who is often forgotten about these days is Mort Sahl (who passed away in October of this year). He started in the 1950s, and was probably an inspiration for Lenny Bruce -- as well as George Carlin. Sahl once said he didn't tell jokes, he gave short lectures. He was also called a comic philosopher. I haven't watched much of his stuff, but from the bits and pieces of standup I've seen from him in video clips, he seems very astute and not afraid to ruffle some feathers. In fact, this latter tendency apparently was the one thing which led to his fall from grace, as he incorporated into his act some questions the accuracy of the Warren Commission Report (in regards to the assassination of JFK), and alienated a good chunk of his audience in doing so. (Wikipedia says that his annual income dropped from $1 million to $13,000 by 1964, as a result.)

The bit that he is leading up to with what you just watched is the iconic bit you really want to see. You saw the preliminary parts but you didn't catch the best part. The part he's about to do exists all over the internet as "The American dream." If you think what he said about your rights is devastating you haven't seen anything. Please please everyone who sees this comment on it or like it or repeat it if you have seen the bit you know they need to see it.

You should watch George Carlins national press club speech. Guy sat down with some of the finest professional snake tongues around and spent a good 50 minutes calmly and viciously tearing them to shreds. It's absolutely beautiful. If you're looking into it, try to get the complete piece. It's about as good as a full comedy special, heavily recommended.

George Carlin was the first person who made me start questioning what I was told. Most of his points here have stronger counter arguments but you have to inform yourself on the subjects. I think that is kind of the point. I don't think Carlin would want you to simply believe what he tells you in place of what someone else told you.

Loved your reactions! I've been a George Carlin fan for decades. In fact, I was him live a few times, and he always delivered. For a recommendation I'd have to suggest "Rats and squealers" (note* it's only audio as it was the last recorded piece before his passing), and for fun "baseball vs football". I could list tons of his content, but, if you're into him, and have fans like myself, you'll always be bombarded with suggestions

Well, as for recomendation you need for sure to do some of Bill Hicks stuff. You guys also reacted to a few Tool songs, so you should know that their album "Aenima" was dedicated to him and has a few references to him, like the song "Aenema" who's inspired in one of Bill Hicks routines called "Arizona Bay" to which unfortunitely I don't think you can find a clip on youtube, or the song "Third Eye" which at the start has two small skits of Bill's routines. He was an extremely promising comedian, very thought provocative and somewhat controversial, who like Carlin made a lot of social critique in his comedy, but unfortunately he died at age 32 with a pancreatic cancer. If I were you I'd start with something "light" like "Anti-Intelectualism" and then move on to stuff like "Positive Drug Story" or "Play From Your Heart".

Carlin is one of the greatest of all time! The way I'd explain rights is The People only have the rights they are willing to kill, and die for. When government tells you that you don't have the right to defend yourself, or that you don't have the right to free speech, and The People do nothing about it, then of course, that "right" can't exist. You see, government really has no power. Government has authority which is a huge difference. Authority is derived from power, and is granted by those with power. That which is granted can be revoked at any time. The People alone have power, but it only manifests in large numbers. If enough people are fed up that it becomes overwhelming force against government (about 2% of the population), then government has zero chance of winning, and rights are reaffirmed.

Carlin was a genius. Actually cried when he died because his comedy saved my life at the darkest times (with illness) in my life... However, an interesting point about the Japanese interment camps of the 40's. They didn't just happen for no reason. Look up the Niihau incident - which was the case of a Japanese pilot who's plane was crippled, crash landing on a Hawaiian island where he was treated for and guarded by islanders (who had no knowledge yet of the attacks), then a number of them were convinced by this pilot to fight and kill their fellow Americans because they were of Japanese descent. Not saying it was right at all, but it certainly was a response to what those who understand Japanese culture know is a very devote sense of honoring their lineage.
@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 2 года назад
Not a great example. Hawaii has a past as dark as that of the US mainland where mistreatment of natives by Europeans are concerned. Consequently the Japanese ethnics living on the island probably didn't see the US in the same way as mainland Japanese ethnics would.
@folkblues4u
@folkblues4u 2 года назад
@@mnomadvfx Not a great example of what? It's literally what caused the response that led to the camps. And yes the mainland and island territories sure do have a dark history of Europeans mistreating natives ... just like the dark history of natives mistreating, robbing, kidnapping, and murdering Europeans (but we don't acknowledge that bit of history). And, judging by your last statement, it's obvious you didn't even bother reading about the incident - or else facts of the case like a pair of islanders (who you are sure didn't see the US as the Japanese mainland did) being convinced within a 12 hr period to murder their friends and commit ritual suicide for the Emperor might have prevented you from such an ignorant assumption. Though, given your demonstrated knowledge of historical facts, perhaps not. At any rate, i would recommend reading about it - it was thoroughly documented by eye-witnesses and investigated by national security teams tasked with reporting every nuance of the tragedy in hopes of preventing similar ones.

George Carlin grew up living in the building where my mother still lives. I knew his mother and met him once. He went to the Catholic school on the corner. One of his album covers is a shot looking down the street where he grew up. He was guest host many times for the Tonight Show when Johnny Carson was host. All of his stuff is thoughtful.

If I remember correctly, the "hold up your right hand" was from a time when it was hard to document people. So instead of a paper criminal record, they would tattoo, scar, or brand your right hand with what you did. So when you raised your right hand, you were showing your criminal record.
