I was blown away by The Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp remix. I bought the original album back in about 1975 and in all the intervening years, I'd never noticed the 'Oh Sir Frankie Crisp' buried deep and quietly in the mix. I listened to the original straight afterwards and yes, it's there, but barely noticeable. Bringing it up in the mix just adds to the surreal jollity of the track. I tend to agree that the quieter tracks are served best, I always liked the feel of the original 'Wah Wah', with everything trying to squeeze out of the speakers at the same time. I didn't feel short changed by 'My Sweet Lord', but it didn't feel to me to be sufficiently different. For me, the saddest part is that the drums still sound like they've been filled with sand on many of the tracks, but short of re-recording them, I don't know what you'd do to remedy that.

Personally, I really enjoy hearing George's vocals on My Sweet Lord remixed, sincere and warm. I can definitely hear where it loses some of the majestic scope of the original, but I think an argument can be made for either mix. My other favorite is Wah-wah, especially on 5.1 blu-ray. A lot more of the O'Hara-Smith Singers audible! In general, it's going to take some getting used to hearing the album differently after all these years. It's a "don't throw away your originals" situation, but lots of fun as an alternative.

Musician Bobby Whitlock, who was at every session for this album and played on virtually all the songs and was given a copy, at the time of the release, back in the day, by George Harrison himself, has received a copy of this current release and he says that the mix is crap!!!! He says that it sounds like the worst thing he has ever heard and it sounds like it has been mixed by people who have never mixed anything before. I get the feeling that this has been worked on for whippersnappers used to streaming and iPhones while those who love vinyl and CDs are being short-changed. They probably spent more time on the package design! I think that I will save my money. Phil Spector did the best job, end of story!!

There's an obvious audio problem with Isn't It A Pity Version 2 at the 02:18 to 02:45 mark. The organ/flutes track goes out of sync (a full beat!) for about 25 seconds. No previous official release has this problem. This error affects all official 2020 editions of the album. They should recall the defective discs and re-release them. This would make the collectors who already own this version happy, no doubt. :-)

The repackaging formats of ATMP circa 2021 is, in some cases, beyond ridiculous. I just want to hear about the remixes and the music itself. That, and the the unreleased tracks are of fascination to me, so thanks for focusing on the actual music. Thank you.

I think a big part of the problem with these post Beatles solo albums is those who have the final say. If they would hand the project over to someone very capable of doing the mix, and let them do their job the projects would probably sound better all the way through. But, you have Beatles kid's and wives wanting things done their way, which leads to the engineers not properly being able do their jobs.

I remember when Paul McCartney started his McCartney Collection. They started around $60 and they were much more elaborate. Now they are over $100, but they are still very nice. Although, I bought the George Harrison Deluxe Box set for the music, for $143.00 I expected more. I like seeing unreleased pictures, and maybe a DVD etc. Although there is a ton of music, and I am grateful, it is way over priced. I am a huge fan of George Harrison, but I am not rich.

Not sure I am seeing the value of comparing the Paul Hick remixed release to the original Phil Spector release. Bit like comparing apples to oranges. If you like the original, fine, knock yourselves out and don't listen to the new remix. If like me, you like the original but would love an alternate addition, this new album is fantastic. If I had to choose, I'd pick the remix release. yeah the vocals on some of the tracks are too far forward and they lose a bit of their warmth, but overall, it's like removing 50 years of dust from the original and getting a much more honest contemporary mix. Well done Paul hicks and team!

Andrew, I find it interesting you noticed a piano timing discrepancy at around 2:20 on Isn't It A Pitty version 2, for the last 50 years, I've always heard, what I think is a piano flub at 1:19, right after the line: "some things take so long", and I can't unhear it, but it's not as noticeable on the new mix, so maybe that's why it's version 2, ...great review, Andrew

Interesting that you say that you prefer to listen to the standard version of i.e the White Album. My view is that I have listened so many times to the original versions since the 70's. So now for probably a couple of years the remixed versions of most Beatle related records released with these boxes is what I will play.

Agree that My Sweet Lord is the biggest failure of the remix. Just a majestic record has had the life sucked out. Overall I enjoy the album remix as an alternative but I prefer the original album. It's not for me I'm afraid. Just goes to show Phil Spectors genius. People like to judge him on what happened much later in his life but back in the day he was brilliant at what he did. Producers don't just mix the recordings they make the recordings! It's revisionism at the end of the day and an ugly attempt to cash in. I bought the first version of "All Things Must Pass" in 1970. Sold as a three-record album, it was strictly speaking a double album; you listened to the third record once and then never again. Musically, it was quickly clear: this was not Beatles music (with the possible exception of "Apple Scruffs). Earth-heavy bombast resounded towards us, lacking any lightness or cheerfulness. But the purchase was a must for an almost twenty-year-old at that time - after all, it was the music of a "Beatle". In 2001 it was the turn of the second version. The expectation that the digitalized remix and remastering would clean up the sound and make the beauty of the melodies and vocals clearer was disappointed. It is no different for me when listening to the third version of 2020, sonically hardly a change. Ironically, one could say that the winners of the new remix are Klaus Voormann and Carl Radle. The only gain beyond the double CD is the demos and unreleased takes on the additional CDs. All in all, the new release is an overpriced third release that nobody really needs. I would have been happy if Jeff Lynne had taken over the project. He proved with "Brainwashed" how to make an appealing album out of beautiful melodies and meaningful lyrics.

Great idea to do the scoring system between the original and new, really liked that though with the new remix winning 11-7 can’t understand why you’d rate the original as being better as a whole and something you’d play more than the new remix, could it be no matter the score it’s what we are more used to hearing and being George’s original vision of how it should be, (even though he did express thoughts of wanting to remove much of the reverb and Spector’s wall of sound years later?). I do think George would have preferred the new remix more than the original though perhaps with the more epic tracks they should have done less with them as you said.

The release is another missed opportunity. The saddest thing is how Bobby Whitlock is getting screwed over. This is the guy who was at every session and can set the record straight. But it's like I wrote in the comments on his channel, you can't sell "Bobby Whitlock" or any of the other players who made this record sound the way it did. The only thing the record company can do it push to sell the name of George Harrison. The demos are just BORING. A bunch of half ass song ideas that George never bothered to finish and that's what we're presented with? Give me a break!

Hi Andrew- I hardly ever post comments on RU-vid, I just kind of 'lurk', but really enjoy your videos & reviews. There was just something you said here & you weren't sure that people would get what you meant. It was what you said about the individual tracks often scoring higher than the original mixes, but the album as 'a whole' not matching the original. I've listened to the new mix A LOT now & I like it, but I agree with you. I think it's probably because every track has probably been worked on almost like a separate project- different EQ here- drums boosted there etc. Sorry for rambling, but in a nutshell- it now sounds like a compilation (a very good one). I'm also really glad I watched your video showing the 'super deluxe' set before I received my copy- it saved me from having a nasty shock when it arrived. Maybe it was produced with gnomes in mind? Not only is "I Live for You" not remixed, it's only available in demo form on this new compilation (from what I can tell). So if you want that song in it's more finished form, you have to get the 2001 or 2014 remaster.
@timmdoolen5041
@timmdoolen5041 3 года назад
@Mahki Mahkila I agree. "I Live for You" should have been remixed and included here. Apparently the Lennon estate is being more inclusive (or generous) with the bonus tracks than the Harrison estate. As I mentioned in a different comment, 3 of the 5 bonus tracks from the 2001/2014 ATMP remaster are not included on this very expensive set. Also omitted are a different demo of "Isn't it a Pity" (Let It Roll itunes bonus track), 5 versions of songs from ATMP on the album Early Take: Vol 1, and the Anthology 3 version of "All Things Must Pass". On this new set, CDs 3-5 are 51, 43 and 67 minutes long. So there was ample unused space to include the few missing tracks and make it a complete, all-encompassing definitive edition.

One disappointment about "I'd Have You Anytime" is that the wobble at around the line "All I have is yours" has not been corrected. The original record has a slight pitch wobble that was slightly improved upon on the 2014 remaster, but it hasn't been completely corrected here on this 2021 release as I had hoped they would have.

Thank you for an honest review. Now I know what to expect. A little bit nervous now because I love the original so much. But there can be no way to make these sensational songs seem minor. Propably will be an interesting listening experience bringing depth to understanding true genius of George Harrison.

Hi Andrew I received both the 5 x CD Deluxe Box Set and 3 SHM from Japan today. Overall, I prefer the remix vs the original Phil Spector. My only disappointment was the size of the Deluxe box set which I know was widely discussed. Overall I’m satisfied with the remix. Appreciate your reviews. Keep them coming.

Greetings Andrew✌, Great review 👍 Over the weekend Ive been listening on my headphones several times to the 50th anniversary edition of ATMP and comparing it to my other versions of this album and one Highlight that is pleasing and relieving to me (and to my ears)is this new 2021 remix is Wah Wah, to me I hear more separation of the instrumentation of this Wall of Sound (more líke noise on this track) I hear more clarity with this song. -As for the dismal reviews of the 2021 version of My Sweet Lord its pretty unanimous among the Beatle community such as TJR, Norman Maslov ,Barry Robinson, (Paul) Fit To Be Tie Dyed.

I like your scoring for remix versus original with one, maybe two exceptions involving my favorite tracks. I agree that the wall is sound is more suitable for Wah-Wah, Awaiting On You All and What Is Life. I can’t decide which version of Run of the Mill; still leaning toward the original but that may be because I’ve really liked that one since I bought the album in 1970. The main exception however is The Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp. Too much guitar in the intro and the “Oh Sir Frankie Crisp” refrain ruins the atmosphere, which for me is one of a medieval ballad that might have been well placed on the Beatles White Album. Finally which original did you use for the comparison: the 1970 or the 2001 remaster?

I grew up with the original, love all of the tracks including the jams.....and on my first five listens to the new mix I haven't been disappointed...I think they are excellent and tasteful and whilst I might have some slight preferences to one over the other I am completely baffled how he can be so vituperative about the new mix unless he has some personal grievance. I also love the 'extra' discs....ATMP unplugged and the 'new' songs. I have no complaints about the costs ( an enormous amount of research and works has clearly gone into this).

Bobby was part of the core band comprising of Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and Eric Clapton..I think he is entitled to his opinion because he was there and influenced George as much as did Eric. As far as I have heard from Bobby and Cox’s video he is getting nothing from the re release and was never contacted by Olivia and Dani.....they should have showed much more respect to the only other core band member available except for Eric..I’d be pissed too..but you still have to show respect to George and Bobby does that in spades.

But am also a big fan of plenty of others: Bob Dylan, Oasis, Kate Bush, The Beach Boys, The Housemartins, U2, REM, The Cure, Radiohead, Queen, Bowie, Nick Drake, Blur, Paul Weller and lots of others! I like a lot of Stones songs but have never been a proper fan.

Maybe I was expecting too much. I was hoping the murky drums and backing tracks would have had more definition and detail. They don’t. It sounds like they tuned up George’s voice and slide guitar, and while in enjoy hearing his guitar more in the mix, the bottom end is murkier than ever. I am enjoying the demos and outtakes though.

Hi Andrew. I was wondering if you could clear something up that has been bothering me. It's to do with the song I Live for You. I don't have the CD or Vinyl. I listen on Spotify or RU-vid. In the middle of the song there's a vocal that suddenly disappears. Seems like an editing error. On the demo that doesn't happen. So my question is. Is this error on the CD and Vinyl versions also?
@AndrewDixonMusic
@AndrewDixonMusic 2 года назад
Hi Rob, are you referring to the Day 1 Demo on the new box set? Just had a listen now to the Hi Res download I bought from Qobuz, and also the CD and I can't tell any part in either where it cuts out. There's a part around 2 minutes 20 where he's sort of humming along a verse then stops for the remainder, not sure if that's the part you mean?

Sorry I should've been much more specific. That demo on the 50th ATMP is actually perfect. The one I'm on about is the much more finished version of the song on the ATMP 2014. So at time 1:45 on I Live for You the vocal drops quiet on Spotify. I love that version but its spoilt by this. I understand you might not have the 2014 ATMP for you to check. So sorry if I've wasted your time.

@@colemanmufc No problem, just had a listen to that from my CD (I don't think that's ever been released on vinyl? Could be wrong...) the vocal does go quite for a second or two, not sure if it's a mixing issue or maybe more likely George might have just turned away from his mic for a second while singing. If that's the case I wonder if that explains a reason why the recording wasn't considered for the album, it would have been a fine addition!

@jedikiah1541

I prefer the 30th Anniversary version of the album overseen by George. I think that version made the best of what was already there, without the big changes found here. I agree the quieter songs work better with this remix than the lavish wall of sound, but I think overall it loses some of its edge. Because things are clearer doesn't always make them better. There is a certain mystique that I feel is lost. It sounds almost like it was remixed to be more palatable to a younger generation who are used to listening to the more clinical contemporary sounds. I agree, with "My Sweet Lord" it may be interesting to hear the component parts in more clarity, but the majesty is lost in the process.

I enjoyed your review as per usual. Sets up my expectations well, and makes me want to own it (in spite of the price!!) I see what you mean wrt the ‘epicness’ of the wall of sound songs. Wonder what you make of the 2000 mix. What struck me on there was the improved clarity all around, gradual, not radical. The Apple Jams were definitely improved there. I could imagine therefore that you’d all around prefer the 2000 mix to the original and the current remix. Could you comment?

Hi Hans, The release in 2000 I believe was a remaster than a remix. It's definitely the loudest of the masterings I've heard and it's not one I particularly enjoy, although I did like Apple Scruffs on that release (While being able to look beyond how loud it was!)
