We are also pet parents of an elderly dog (14 year old Aussie). Quality of life is most important. We lost his litter brother from a stroke a few months ago (very unexpected as he was having no health problems beforehand). Bear has gone deaf, has lost most of his eye sight (sees shadows in bright light), and has back hip arthritis which bothers him from time to time, but he still can sense where we are and still eating, drinking, playing with his "sister" (2.5 year old Aussie), etc, without problem. He's not in pain and, as long as he seems to be managing without distress, we're doing our best to helping him live as happy as possible. George has great parents and I hope all of you will continue to live life to its fullest. Hugs from South Carolina!

My whippet had Vestibular disease, diagnosed at 13 also. She was on twice daily medication to improve blood flow in the brain which actually gave her a new lease of energy for a time. She had only 3 episodes in 2 years after that and it was only when she was 15 3/4 that it got very bad and I decided to let her go. She had nearly 3 good years after diagnosis though and always recovered in a day or two. It's hard having to keep an eye on them though, but certainly not the worst illness in my experience. My 2nd dog died from heart failure & that was much harder to watch. He's got some good living ahead still 😊

Poor old George. Hope that he has some good extra time with you. We adopted a dog who was about 8 at the time. We had him until he was 13, when he developed an oral cancer. He managed alright initially with medication and softer food, but went downhill and was sleeping a lot. The last couple of days our cat went and sat beside him, having previously just ‘tolerated’ him. We still miss our old boy, but a couple of years lafter losing him we got a collie puppy. She’s now 6 and acquired a ‘brother’ a couple of years ago when we rescued an abandoned husky cross from a riverbank.

I am very sorry that George has had these health issues! It is so very difficult! ☹ George isn't having mini-stroke, is he? I wish that life will be OK for him & you guys. We also have an old Spaniel, adopted almost 15 years ago, so going on 16 years old. The last 3 years has been a steady lifestyle change... also, adding area rugs everywhere for a dog that has lost his steady footing. Eyes have gone to only distinguishing bright from dark - no details. No more walks and glorious hikes of old. No playing with toys - no barking at surprises! We are just waiting. He still enjoys his food & loves us. It is so difficult, but so rewarding, to love our pets.

It’s so hard to watch them age, but they had to live to do so and need love while they do. Vet says it’s not likely any kind of a stroke, more likely neurological, because of the lack of symptoms except the very specific nystygmas. M

I have Meniere's disease which is an idiopathic vestibular disease and the way I describe my dizziness and vertigo is in terms of narrowboats. Sometimes I am moored on the canal on a day when there is no wind and no passing boats. Other days when it's windy I need to stay moored up and keep sitting down when a boat passes my boat. When I am having an episode I am out in the wash for days on end, feeling nauseous and sometimes vomit. And sometimes there's a storm and I get swept out to the open ocean and hang on to my boat (bed) for dear life. I take anti nausea medication and stay in bed, but nothing works until the storm passes. I have found this analogy useful to describe how I feel, as most people think it's like going on a fairground ride, and I can tell you it's not! 😱 I hope this gives you an idea of what it's like for George. 🐕❤

@@lizriley3836 I’m a Ménière’s sufferer as well and it’s so frustrating when you try and describe the effects, some people just don’t understand how this affects people, it’s a hidden disability and people don’t care about it. Back to George, heartfelt sorrow to hear the news, I live in Milton, a mile or so from Baits Bite Lock so you were ‘neighbours’ of mine for a while and it hurts when someone who has been a part of a community has bad news.

We can completely understand the turmoil you are going through. We have a 16 year old cocker. She has lost her hearing and her eyesight is minimimal, lost teeth too. As with George her taste has changed too and her foods like broccoli and asparagus are no longer favourites. It's heartbreaking knowing what's ahead but she has added so much to our lives as George has for you. Keep running for the ball George and all the best to you both. X

Appreciating how hard this is for you. Elder pets are precious and special because we realize the reality of what is ahead. Thank you for letting us know. You will do all the best things for him. You may want to look into acupuncture for dogs…. Much good can be done for elder pets to help improve their quality of life thanks to this form of medicine. I am realy very sad to hear about Georges health problems, with a dog of 13 years old, it is sort of normal that some prlem come-up. He needs a little bit more of a calmer life now, but with all the love and attention you guys are giving your dear friend, ne should be able to live a happy life for as long as he can. One thing is sure, he could certainly not have found more caring friends yjan the two of you. Good health to the three of you, Love, Peter.

So sorry ive had 2 dogs same thing ,basically a stroke . Both my dogs recovered but its not nice to see .our dogs just dont live long enough but hes had a marvellous life so far

He has had the best life and you have given him the best of care and love but we are all aging sadly. Enjoy him now and make the most of these times and as you say know how much he was in your life. He has been one lucky fellow to get you as his parents. Nothing can stop this, but hugs and memories help. This is so hard for me to write still but stay strong and I know you will do the best for him. Hi guys we met a long time ago on the Oxford near banbury I was walking my frenchie and George came to sniff and say hello Bicho was never happy meeting very energetic dogs. So he just gave his usual bark. Unfortunate Bicho died two years ago at the good age of 11 for a frenchie he had his first seizure on my birthday and all you can do is make sure he know you are always near and lots of love. It’s very hard he survived 6 months. We still miss him, some dogs may live for a long time like this. The night he had 15 epileptic fits was to much and we saw the confusion on his face and thought he can’t go on like this.

We lost our 10 year old black German shepherd in July when we got her at eight weeks she tested positive for Lyme's got it from her mom she was such a good girl and while searching for rescue gsd realized people were getting shepherds cheap then rehoming for a profit a lady popped up that had very well bred eleven week old gsd puppies for a real good price she is awesome have to keep reminding ourselves she is only four months hope George has many more years great dog 👍

I'm 77 and just in May got diagnosed as having Vertigo. The movement in his eyes is the same as I had. The nausea is the same. The walking as if you are drunk is the same. A 14 yo dog would be 78 yo human. I think he has Vertigo. I'm much better after rehab. Only hits me after lying down. It's crystals in the ear canal that get loose. 🙏❤

You’re doing what’s right for George like you’ve always done. My heart goes out to you… We had adopted several older dogs in recent years, and their shorter times with us was more than balanced by their great love for us and the fun we had together. Watching their time draw near though is hard, and we just love on them that much more. Sending you caring thoughts.

Hi Michael & Jo. Sorry you are having issues with George. Over the years, we have been in the same position that you are now in. You know that your time with them is coming to a close. You just have to make sure you appreciate the time you have left, and to help him to have his best life that he can, which I am sure you will do.

Bless him. I get the same symptoms as him sometimes. I had an ear infection when I was younger and it makes me prone to getting little calcium crystals in my ear canal, which results in severe dizziness and barfing until I can persuade them to move. It could be something as innocent as that, don't assume the worst. Try to persuade him to lie still. If he gets ear infections get his ear fur clipped so they get more air flow. Poor boy. ❤

Thank you. Unfortunately they ruled out ear issues on the first day, that’s why we’re left with neurological causes of some sort. Hopefully it’s just transient, but there’s no way to know without the risk and pretty severe discomfort (for him) of an MRI. M

My Daisy is 15 sadly shes notvseeing well and has a few health issues! Shes a happy girl, but i do sympathize with your situaton , Daisy stumbles on her huge ft ? She is also eating a fish base diet..Bless George..and Bless you both.George is a wonderful companion..and a Beautiful Boy! we lost our border collie a few years ago now he like your george was very active but as he got older he lost his will to run after a ball(or anything else we threw) i really hope george makes can tell you when its time. wishing all well .

It's never easy with an older dog,you know at some point something will happen and their health will worsen but you never want to accept it's going to happen anytime soon. I've been through it with 2 dogs previously,they are your 'children' and it hurts when they are not well. You most definitely have given George the BEST life since you rescued him, i hope George is ok now, sending hugs to all 3 of you 🤗❤

Oh, I am so sorry to hear this news. My heart goes out to you. We have been where you are with George now. Having lived with anywhere from two to five cats with a wide age range at any given time, every few years or so it's inevitable that the senior kitty in the house begins to have issues. The first time we went down the road of trying to treat and all it did was prolong our kitty's physical pain while having less time to spend together during her last days because she was in the hospital. Afterwards we vowed never to put another cat through that misery. It appears that we may be heading there again with our 13-year-old house panther, but like George, for now he is happy, eating and still has quality of life, so we are going with that until it becomes evident that it is no longer the case. You made the best decision for George by not subjecting him to constant testing and anesthesia that won't improve his condition. It's a hard decision but one made out of pure love. George is lucky to have had you as his guardians all these years. You gave him a good life that he might not have had otherwise. I wish you as much quality time together with him as possible. Sending hugs to all three of you from across the pond. 💜

Aww Poor George. I'm sending a big virtual hug to all three of you. We lost our oldest dog a fortnight ago. We expected to not have him as long as we did. We rescued him as a one year old big puppy who had been severely abused and he came to us with a titanium joint in his rear right elbow or knee (?) and we fully expected him developing arthritis which he did so he could never walk with the other dogs . The problem was we weren't expecting to find him one morning passed away. It was quite a shock and broke my heart. He was 13 going on 14. He stopped us having to agree on THE time for that final vet visit. My husband has buried him in our garden which is comforting to us. I have loved George since the day he joined you. As I mentioned recently, that dog rescue who wouldn't let you have the initial one you chose because you lived on a boat. The other rescue charity (with George) were fantastic though and could see how George would thrive in your ownership and he certainly has done. I hope this is just a little glitch in his wellbeing and he will shake it off and go back to being his usual self. As Jo said, there are three of you in the Perseverance crew, that is how I hope it will be for some time.

Hi Michael & Jo. We once met each other at Braunston for a quick chat! Bob Wendy and Ben, our springer travelling on narrowboat boat Harlequin. So sorry to hear of George’s older age struggles, comes to us all eventually. You both take comfort in the fact that he’s having a great life. Wendy and I no longer have our boat! I too got old and was no longer able to perform any maintenance! Stay safe in your travels. We miss ours so much.

It's tough as our pupprs grow older. Mine are mid teens, and we just don't take the same medical steps we might have when they were younger. You're definitely right to avoid the GA. Hope y'all are well as can be in this situation.

Standard poodle had this as well, first episode was the worst and very scary, thought it was a stroke initially. She recovered well for half a year with just a few bouts of unsteadiness but not the head shaking and then just got slowly less mobile until we lost her 2 years after just from old age. Best wishes and hoping for best outcome for George.

It must be upsetting to see your dog have an episode like that, and to worry about how he'll be. I'm feeling for your both. 🤗 I'm feeling for George too. I had the eye wobble thing many years ago, not so bad as to make me fall down, but it was disturbing. But I gather doggies forget things which aren't happening right at the moment, so I'm sure he's not worried. :)

We took a springer spaniel from puppy to 13 years old and loved even his naughty moments. George has featured in your vlogs throughout and was one of the reasons we started to watch you guys years ago. You are doing everything you can from a medical angle and more than meeting his emotional needs, so, sleep well, knowing you can do no more. It’s at this stage you wish they could talk, that way you could explain to him what’s going on. I’m sure George would say “It’s been such fun being part of this crew”. Aww, glad he's ok-ish at the moment and still able to enjoy life. Boat life is so good for most dogs and he has had some marvellous adventures. Thank you for sharing, it can't be easy but we are all out here rooting for him and for you :)

Sorry to hear about George. I follow a van life couple on RU-vid (expawers) and one of their dogs had frequent episodes like this too. Again, the vets could offer very little in the way of any treatment, but they decided to try him on CBD oil. Since then he's never had an episode, where before they were fairly regular. I think its well over a year now since they started.

Sorry to hear about Georges health issues. Never fun when our pets have health issues. I had a dog, Buddy, with ear infection in 2016. This caused him to suddenly stagger side-to-side like the proverbial drunken sailor when out for the morning walk. This recovered quickly. Sadly later in the year his kidneys failed and he had to be euthanized, only 8+ years, too young. The symptom was his going off his foods. A blood test then showed the kidney failure which was severe at the time. As you stated, the MRI does not make sense. I hope George has a few good years left.

We had our boy Judge for three years after his first seizure. We also reached a similar conclusion about the efficacy of an MRI. We are so glad to know that you were able to have him seen immediately. We need to have relationships with multiple practices to make sure that one of them might be available in case something comes up with one of our dogs.

Sorry about George being poorly. We have just lost one of our dogs who had a rectal tumour, lived a further 2 years until he declined in the last few weeks. George has had an amazing life with you and hopefully will be with you for a while yet❤

Thinking of you both. Our Oscar had 3 episodes of exactly this, recovered each time but slightly less agile each time. 18 months later he finally passed away. Poor breathing finally got him. So absolutely enjoy him, he will get slower but hopefully you've some nice times with him still.

I am so sorry about George. It's possible that the anti-nausea is affecting his eating - offer foods he likes after he's been off of that for a day or two, assuming he can stay off of that medication. We are going through similar issues with our boy, and understand how you feel. He also enjoys his favorite activities still, so we're working on quality of life. Best wishes to you all, and hoping for some good time yet for George.

@@MinimalList That's the ticket! Loki has to eat mainly a kidney-safe food, but gets fresh-cooked ground burger in that to counteract anemia (and to make it taste better, of course!) He's enjoying car rides and trips to the park every day.
