Unique drummer George Kollias of US extreme Death Metal band Nile with his second appearance on drumtalk but this time it's the real thing: he shares his thoughts on teaching, nuanced extreme drumming, giving advice how to approach professional drumming as well as to handle mental and physical demands of being an extreme player and how to develop a healthy perspective on being an artist. The episode was filmed on Nile's European tour with Terrorizer, Exarsis & Art Of Deception in Mannheim on the 12th of February 2018.

Saw Niles set 2 years ago in Worcester Mass, right after the show George hopped off stage and I bought him a Yuengling. We shared a brew and talked for a few minutes and that was an experience I will never forget. Talk about humble, just a normal dude chatting with a Greek God. His words in this vid I admire / was surprised of is how he said all genres of music are equally challenging (example pop music) and also that he practices about 6 HOURS A DAY!!!.. ps, only a half hour to an hour of that is metal / extreme drumming /m/ cheers from New Hampshire!

George is one of the most diverse death metal drummers in the world. And I believe that really comes down to his comments about "trying new things". Nile is death metal perfection to me. Everything from the guitars, to the drums, to the growls and general atmosphere. It's just unique within the style. And I think that all boils down to the fact that Nile was never afraid to just try out new crazy stuff. Not leaving the genre of course - but sprinkled with that magic ingredient that makes it so much more interesting for the listener to enjoy. Kollias' comments about the stuff he's doing for the new Nile album... I don't think I've ever been as excited for a metal record to come out. The new line-up seems like the perfect fit for Nile. Re-invigorated if you please. Basically a line-up of death metal gurus. Doesn't get better than that.

I remember seeing Simon Schilling cover Nile and I think it was The Essential Salts, he was doing a blast and then starting playing a polyrhythm on the toms and I had never seen anything like it. Its one thing to hear the music but something totally different to see it. That's when I realized how good Kollias really is, its definitely not just speed sometimes you have to see it or even better play it.

@arent4771
@arent4771 6 лет назад
Speed is a byproduct of control. As you learn more technique and control, your speed will build up, and you will be able to play faster and more challenging types of music, and I think that is why Kollias is fast now, but I do not think he ever focused on being super fast.
@markcooperartcom
@markcooperartcom 6 лет назад
Speed is actually a byproduct of relaxation. Many drummers are fast and have no control.
@arent4771
@arent4771 6 лет назад
I disagree. What I mean by speed, is when you can keep up a stable beat at a certain "fast" tempo for a long period of time, not when you can momentarily knock it up to 260-300 bpm and then fall over from exhaustion. That is not speed, that is just bad drumming. If you practice technique continuously, the speed will come on it's own, because the hard work will strengthen your muscles and increase your stamina.
@retrorenaissance9497
@retrorenaissance9497 5 лет назад
i see what y'all are saying, but honestly when youre this fast you dont get there without concious effort
@JamesCarian
@JamesCarian 5 лет назад
You're dropping the context of what he's talking about. He's mentioning the drummers on RU-vid who title videos like "300 BPM blastbeats" and saying those aren't the type of videos he makes. He never says he didn't try to get fast. Obviously he did (he says specifically he always liked to challenge himself).

@TheWitchOvAgnesi
@TheWitchOvAgnesi 4 года назад
I have heard him mention the whole "why spend 10 years trying to improve your left foot if your leading foot can already do it" argument before. I honestly was floored hearing him say that. Uh, because you want to be able to use the left foot more effectively? I'll even throw out the most banal of possible situations you could encounter... Midway through the last song of a set many years ago, my right pedal broke. I had to finish the song with my left pedal. I managed to do it, but thankfully it was the last song and it didn't require double bass. That incident, and hating having a left foot that was weaker than the right foot (especially since I was really getting into double bass), immediately set me on the road to simply leading with my left foot whenever I played. It took all of one year to get my left foot as comfortable as my right. Not ten years. Sorry George, but I (and many other drummers - Derek Roddy, Gene Hoglan and likely just about any of the younger DB players coming up) think you're wrong about this.

I remember a couple of years back, people throwing shit comments at George because of the bpm thing. What people don't understand is tha in order to play good, it takes a lot of practice and dedication; not simply take an instrument once a week. He, like many other musicians, made videos to share his techniques, not to boast himself. George, Hellhammer, Pete Sandoval, and many others are great drummers in their respective etal music genres; some like them, so don't, but to play drums like them take years of practice. Even Inferno said it on a video: " in a studio you can repeat as many times, but in a live concert you only have one time to do it. You mess it up and you're fucked". So if a professionak musician explains something while being realistic, my suggestion to the people who aspire to be drummers etc should listen. The same thing goes with guitar players like (I don't know...just to name one example) Brian Hoffman, or even a vocalist, if he/she is sharing a playing techniques, simply listen and take pointers. Maybe you could be the next George Kollias, Flo Mournier etc in the future and see yourself doing a video like this.
