Hate to interject with facts but the current state of Hollywood film making owes as much praise as it can heap on George Lucas. True, the prequels weren't as good as everyone assumed they'd be but to say Lucas doesn't know what he's doing is ridiculously short sighted and just exposes ignorance. When you think highest quality theater sound, that would be THX. Lucas developed that. When you think highest quality special effects whether they're in camera or digital, that would be Industrial Light and Magic. George Lucas started that. When you think best quality sound recording and editing, Skywalker Sound. Guess who? That's right little learner, George Lucas. Every big budget blockbuster owes Lucas a debt of gratitude. Before 1977, Hollywood had never seen something as big as Star Wars. Every studio turned him down except for 20th Century Fox. Even they were schooled in blockbuster marketing because they foolishly signed over to Lucas all aspects of his film beyond theatrical release. There's a reason why you stores are flooded with really cool film related toys, guess who started that all? Oh, you're learning, good for you. Oh yeah, a little franchise called Indiana Jones, that was a lot of George Lucas too.

1. jaws was also important in the inception of the blockbuster 2. merchandising has only led to rampant consumerism and infantilization of adults so that’s not really a boon to Lucas imo. but i will add lucas’ spirituality as he imbues it in his work is very important to the films and society at large. shame that aspect didnt carry over to any of the trends he kickstarted.

Charlie didn't seem to catch George's self-referential joke about being able to "go back and fix mistakes", i.e., his tinkering with the Star Wars films, and neither did the audience. And Charlie's chuckling in strange places, as if he's not really following George's lead...but at least he mostly just lets him talk, which is great, as George is in a pretty talkative mood. But it would've been a much better interview for us SW fans if Charlie had known the right questions to ask. If they are truly friends, GL might have been more forthcoming, and maybe would've elaborated or shown some reflective growth about things like the prequel hate and the aforementioned endless tinkering with the OT. Still, interesting. It was fascinating and inspiring to listen to George talk about his life. He seems like a very down to earth guy who just had incredible drive to do things his way, and that's pretty badass. I'd love to see him finally really do one of the experimental "tone poem" films he's been talking about for years...that would be awesome. It would be amazing to see him become an avant garde experimental cinema artist for this chapter of his life. Bravo, George, and THANK YOU.

GL was a great visionary when he did THX1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars. The problem with Lucas was that after the massive success of SW, he from being a filmmaker to entrepreneur. Not that that is a bad thing, but that he lost his sense of movie making. Still, he was an innovator. THX surround sound, he was owner of Pixar before seling it to Disney, and he was one of the men behind many old movies being remastered. Yeah, he should've co-wrote the prequels and hire someone else to direct the films, but in my opinion they are entertaining.

When the Lucas Art Museum wasn't going to be built in Chicago it should have been built in Toledo, OH. Makes perfect sense because where is Toledo? Lucas County, of course! Ohio named an entire county for him! And they had to be visionaries because George Lucas was born May 14, 1944 and Lucas County, OH was settled June 20, 1835. See?!?! 109 years before George was born, someone in Ohio knew a future filmmaker and all-around smart businessman was going to be born and make films that would change the film industry! :-D The above, for those who have forgotten, is what was known as "Truthiness" on the old "Colbert Report." For those that think that was the dumbest thing ever, I have two words for you: lighten up!

@@Voltar hence why Disney’s Star Wars is just corporate fiction. A corporation that bought a company to create more films from what they thought the fans wanted, yet there’s a lack of heart and soul in those films. George Lucas is the heart and soul of Star Wars. Without Lucas being involved in anyway, even to the degree of something as simple as just approving of a story to be made into a book or game, there is no Star Wars.

As well, I feel it could be a great way to inspire young people regarding narrative art and films. So this is how Charlie Rose makes money.
@sclogse1
@sclogse1 8 лет назад
+hulkhatepunybanner Rose was born Charles Peete Rose, Jr. on January 5, 1942 in Henderson, North Carolina, the only child of Margaret (Frazier) and Charles Peete Rose, Sr., tobacco farmers. The Rose family lived near the railroad tracks in Henderson, in rooms above the general store that his parents owned and managed, and where Charlie helped out. After graduating from high school, where he starred on the basketball team, Rose entered Duke University as a pre-med student. His extra-curricular activities included working with children in a Head Start program. One summer, he secured an internship in the office of North Carolina senator B. Everett Jordan. According to him, his experiences as an intern turned him into a "political junkie" and, upon returning to college, he changed his major to history. After receiving an A.B. degree in 1964, he entered the Duke University School of Law but, sometime before or shortly after earning a J.D. degree in 1968, he realised that the practice of law held little interest for him. Inspired by the idea of "building something" as an entrepreneur, he started taking classes at the New York University Graduate School of Business (he had moved to New York City in 1968) and accepted a job at Bankers Trust. Through his wife, who was doing research for the CBS television show 60 Minutes (1968), Rose became friendly with people employed in broadcasting and he developed what soon became a passionate interest in the broadcast media. After his wife was hired by the BBC in the United States, he handled some assignments for the BBC on a freelance basis. In 1972, while continuing to work at Bankers Trust, he landed a job as a weekend reporter for WPIX-TV, in New York City. During his approximately one-year stint at WPIX, Rose tried several times, without success, to contact Bill Moyers for an interview. In 1974, Moyers telephoned Rose, after Rose's wife spoke to Moyers about him at a social gathering. At their first meeting, he and Moyers felt an "instant chemistry" and, within weeks, he began working as the managing editor of the PBS series "Bill Moyers' International Report"). (Moyers has said that Rose served as his "alter ego" as well at that time.) In 1975, Moyers named him the executive producer of Bill Moyers' Journal (1972), a PBS documentary and conversation series although, by his own account, Rose had "no great desire to be on camera". In the following year, he became the correspondent for U.S.A.: People and Politics, Moyers's new weekly PBS political magazine series. "A Conversation with Jimmy Carter", one installment of that series, won a 1976 Peabody Award. Later in 1976, after Moyers left public television to work for CBS, Rose accepted a Washington, D.C.-based job as a political correspondent for NBC News. In the belief that he lacked sufficient training to do a proper job and that he should "get the maximum amount of on-air experience", as he put it, he seized opportunities to host interview shows. He first appeared as a guest host on "Panorama", on WTTG-TV, in Washington, D.C. In 1978, after leaving NBC, he served as a co-host with AM/Chicago, on WLS-TV. A year later, Blake Byrne, the general manager of KXAS-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth, hired him as programme manager and, although the station had no budget to pay Rose to do a talk show, he also offered him a time slot for what became Charlie Rose (1991). In 1981, with the goal of securing national syndication, Rose moved Charlie Rose (1991) to Washington, D.C. where, for the next two years or so, it was broadcast on the NBC-owned station WRC-TV. At the same time, he hosted another weekly interview show for WRC-TV. At the end of 1983, CBS hired Rose to anchor CBS News Nightwatch (1982), an interview program that was taped during the day and was broadcast five times a week between 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. Rose has recalled having "a wonderful time" during his six-and-a-half years as the CBS News Nightwatch host. Like that of Charlie Rose, the CBS News Nightwatch guest list was not confined to the world's movers and shakers. Among the other people whose activities or histories caught Rose's interest was the convicted murderer Charles Manson, with whom he talked for three hours. The CBS News Nightwatch broadcast of Rose's interview with Manson won an Emmy Award in 1987.

@Charleroi92
@Charleroi92 3 года назад
Its just not that simple. People grow and evolve. And in George Lucas'case - fail to get filmmakers who would and could challenge him to board the prequels' productions and having to surround himself with what turned out to be yes men. I truly so not believe he did this all on purpose. It must just be that the journey took a turn on him or he took a wrong turn in it and the rest is history. Making movies is hard, especially when you don't have a proper red team poking necessary holes in what you came up with

So, Lucas sold Star Wars for a billion dollars (at least.) He announced that he would be spending it on education for the future because people badly needed to be better educated. I've been waiting to see if he'd keep his word. Haven't heard a thing, besides this film museum. Not that it's a terrible idea, but it won't save the human race. What about paying for scholarships for gifted young idealists? Or founding an organization to fight to change the public education system to better work for right-side-of-the-brain artists and thinkers and/or fight against abuse in schools? Or founding schools for artistic minds, greatly encouraging creative minds and setting an example for others? Or funding filmmakers to make educational documentaries about the issues which he deems most important which people are not appreciating (from his view?) Instead, a film museum with 'architecture of the future' is the way to go? How much of this is about making a positive difference in the world and how much of it is George stroking his own ego?

Yeah, thanks for not being a jerk about it too. I was kinda expecting that reaction as well. Sad that we've come to expect it huh? Lucas' promise: www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/02/george-lucas-donate-4-billion_n_2067145.html

+Dylan Burgess What I find strange is that, whilst thats true, he did become a sell-out. Coppola said it pretty early on, and it makes sense when you look back at Jedi, or at the prequels and compare them to his previous work. Everything inches toward merchandising and business as opposed to story. He kinda just became the corporate entity he hated. I mean his producer left before Jedi because he didnt agree with the toyetic approach, and I believe him, why else if youre gonna make so much money? Anyway, he made the best decision in a long time by selling the company with Kathleen Kennedy at the helm. Hes no longer at fault for any problems and people who love the property get to work on it with free reign. If it works out, people will love him again too. I guess maybe the wisdom came with age. And hes seems like a nice guy, made a lot of people happy anyway.

How's that decision working out for everyone?

@@johnedelmann6711 pretty great for George. People now like him again and some see how hard it is make a star wars since it's basically a religion now whilst most now vent at JJ Abrams, Kathy Kennedy and Rian Johnson instead. Yay for George

Lucas really needs to review his history...and his...logic. I think he was trying to tie Walter Benjamin's idea of art and mechanical reproduction with the invention of the printing press--claiming that these resulted in the diminishment of the narrative art form in the twentieth century??? Even though the 20th Century was arguably the novel's greatest heyday, as well as giving rise to, well, story-based cinema... Lucas loves to affect this lax intellectual tone (almost like William Buckley but without the accent), but there's no substance behind it. He speaks in vague, while grand, generalizations, knowing that nobody will ever challenge him. If you were a regular guy, spouting this tangled nonsense, people would think you were high.

I agree. I really do respect George Lucas, but he doesn't know too much about history. Just listen to him talk about the Vietnam war. He rambles.
