He realizes his achievements with Star Wars come to nothing considering he didn’t win an Oscar and the interviewer isn’t impressed so he desperately searches his mind for something he’s actually achieved in his failure of a life…
The actual context is pretty fantastic too actually. He is asked what he wants of him to remain when he's gone or something and he drops that pretty much out of nothing. You know the guy is famous, rich and known for his movies but he doesn't care about that one bit compared to his family. Two of his kids he adopted as a single parent btw. Remarkable human being :)
George Lucas is one the most under appreciated film makers of our time. Whether you love or hate Lucas he did more to revolutionize film making then any film maker ever.
Yeah... Well, John Huston had five wives, drank heavily at home. By all accounts, he was a terrible Husband and Terrible dad. That being said, he had an Oscar.
Dare To Speak actually no. If it wasn’t for his wife, we would have had a pretty shitty movie back in the Seventies. He kind of was about to mess it up but she put everything back in order, story-wise. Also some other adjustments. She kinda is the glue that held it together. But yeah, ofc it all started from Lucas’s mind so he’s the creator 😊
John Doe his wife’s biggest contribution that made it into the final cut of the film was editing the Death Star trench scene, as she was taking a break from working on New York, New York at the time and George asked her if she could help edit that scene. The rest of the film was edited by Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. George Lucas himself also began to edit the film from scratch when an early version of the film was garbage due to the editor not putting the film together the way he wanted it to be put together, then hired Hirsch and Chew when he had to go back and reshoot some short scenes for padding and making the film make more sense narratively. She did edit some of the scenes that got cut, like Luke meeting up with his friends
Lori Thomas And He does. He really does. Look where his creation is now. George, I'm 14 years old and teared up seeing this for the first time. However you made a universe where people of all ages come together and celebrate this amazing saga. George an Oscar is something but giving someone joy, happiness and sadness is another. George the Star Wars film you directed is my favourite Star Wara film (I'm not saying that for effect my favourite Star Wars film is Episode IV A New Hope) George you kickstarted a revolution in the industry you love. Industrial Light and Magic, one word... Brilliant. Just Brilliant. The Special Effects studio that has pretty much given people the best CGI and Other Special Effects have to offer. Do I need one name the movies I'm have basically just worked on. You kickstarted the Pixar Computer yeah you guys PIXAR that animation company. Yeah he basically indirectly and probably unintendedly help to make Toy Story (Look on the history of Pixar if you don't believe me... Oh yeah Steve Jobs good on you for believing in Pixar by the way) You made a new world for me George a world which is more real every day as I discover something new about it whether it be Lore, trivial or even just obscure information. I want to know it because of my love for Star Wars (I love Indiana Jones as well) My gratitude for you George Lucus. You selling the Franchise to Disney was not even an event to me. It was just a move in a new direction. It may be a controversial and weird direction but it's a direction and I love Star Wars. It's probably unlikely that you will see this comment on this quite obscure video on RU-vid, but I want you to know that I respect you, I admire you, and most of all I thank you for what you have done for this industry, I thank you for Star Wars and I thank you for my childhood experiences. Thank You for doing this George Lucus. Bless you and May The Force be with you.
When someone asked Clint Eastwood why he’s never gotten an Oscar he said: “Because I’m in the movie business not in the Oscar business” then the year after that he got an Oscar. The Oscars are bullshit!
@@nnass262 Before the ST, people blamed George Lucas on ruining their childhood with the stupid PT. Everyone hated the prequels. There’s a documentary called The People vs. George Lucas. Remember: this was before the sale to Disney. People literally hated George Lucas. Then the ST came out and it basically made the whole PT into a masterpiece. So that’s what I’m trying to say. Got it?
@@dalekdx What do you mean by "lack of research"? He has NO Oscars! He has one Amanda and one Katie. Buto no Oscar in his life, in his heart, in his pride.
This video is one of the greatest examples of how basically any material can be shaped into a masterpiece with just the power of editing. Ironically, same thing is true for the original Star Wars.
0:46, That’s what matters, Not some artificial recognition. Although I’ve never watched his movies (Not into science fiction) but everyone knows how big giant he is. Respect Sir💯
im sure youve seen indiana jones?? george did that, how about howard the duck? thats an original depending on your age you should know that one, what about the beverly hills cop? maybe the movie captian EO with micheal jackson? i could go on all bloody day about his movies, im 100% sure youve seen at least one, at least.
So says you. To those whose ballots counted another "picture" was more deserving and better candidate, in their estimation. Not every film produced can take home the trophy for a "honor" bestowed upon one choice in each category. A "snub" in your book represents little more than a choice made by a handful of others with an opinion differing from that which you hold Any such program is going amount , in your words, to "bullshit". Unless awards are being handed out to the winner of a contest between competitors in a short foot race from point A to point B or like match - anything else that purports to be a "competition" is subject to bias, etc.
@@justicia5783 Shakespeare In Love is your typical Oscar baiting heap of garbage that fails to be memorable or meaningful in the long run. It is a BASTARDIZATION of the life of the greatest playwright who ever lived. The plot is derivative and the filmmakers were even sued for having stolen it from previous sources. Typical Hollywood campaigning for film that didn't deserve to win. Saving Private Ryan is far more memorable and meaningful AND original, and even now the general consensus is that this film was far more deserving of the win.
I no longer watch nor care about the Oscars after the year Saving Private Ryan lost the Best Picture Oscar! Weinstein most likely bought the votes! Hope he rots in jail that freakin serial predator! Ryan is one of the greatest movies ever made! In my Top 5! ☮️🖖🏽
I think it's pretty telling how whenever WW2 comes up, specifically D-Day, saving private ryan inevitably comes up, showing that it's had a lasting cultural impact, meanwhile when shakespeare is talked about, not a single person in the entire world has ever thought of shakespeare in love. So what the fuck hollywood
@Manuel Patterson That's a good way of looking at it. I see professional poker players that are the same, they have millions in the bank, and then they spend hundreds of thousands trying to win a bracelet, just to say they have one.
“Your cruel remarks made me so unhappy I cried all the way to the bank", Liberace when reviewers on the major New York newspapers hooted derisively at his Madison Square Garden performance.
We live in a world that underestimates the importance of great moms and dads. I love that this editing unintentionally brings attention to an important thing: being a good parent is countless times more important than Oscars.
Tall Texican The people have spoken, that’s all that matters. There’s a lot of passionate and talented artists’ out there that are flat broke and will go to their graves without any recognition. At least with money you can pay your bills. Remember it’s the people who buy tickets to the movies, buy the dvds and products not the academy. Besides, the academy, like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has made some pretty questionable choices when it comes to winners. How many Oscar winners have their own franchises anyways?
@@EVsSuck777 I would prefer the money. Once you have the money you can worry about recognition. Rich and anonymous suits me better than poor and recognised.
tell THAT to the guy who won best director for that movie...back in like, early 2000s. Ya know the one? I think there was a horse? Might have been a piano? Ugh wtf was that movie??
@@Seethi_C Marvel does have a higher gross revenue, but Star Wars is more well-known. What's really a testament to Star Wars is that it has about half of Marvel's total gross revenue (as of 2019). This means a lot more when you consider Marvel has 2-3 times the number of movies.
@@robertxhacker but they just did. teaching the kids right, being a great dad will make them live better. adding more happy people to the world will make it a better place
Lucas has more fans than probably any Oscar winner ever will. He created a world that is deeply important to hundreds of millions, if not billions of people. And, most importantly, he really is a great dad.
"And the winner is... Woody Allen!" "What? How can you do this? This is outrageous! It's unfair! How can you be a world famous director, and _not_ have an Oscar?" "TAKE A SEAT, young Lucas."
I love how the context of this video changes depending on how you interpret the "Thank you for doing this". It can be seen as a harsh way of ending the interview - "Thank you for doing this inteview, now get out". Or, my favorite, it can be seen as Rose trying to console Lucas - "Thank you for doing what you do". The dramatic music helps that immensely.
All the editing was fantastic, but the fade from young George's face to George in the interview with the same frown was absolutely hilarious. Well done!
Rose is now the one who’s feeling bad when he considers his career (and personal) choices. Lucas may not have won an Oscar but he didn’t have to retire in disgrace.

I don’t know which is weirder, that Charlie Rose didn’t research his award history or that Lucas hasn’t come to terms with not having gotten an Oscar. Either way, being a good dad is a lot more than many men with Oscars can say.
I think it is quite deliberate. It is a way of sliding in a difficult touchy topic - and both of them handles it as well as it can be. Rose follows up with a shoulder clap "thank you for doing this" which goes directly through Lucas' facade. I think Rose knows exactly what he is doing.
Honestly, je probably just assumed that someone with Lucas' fame and renown would've won one at some point. It's like his Leonardo DiCaprio never won an Oscar before Revenant, but most people thought that he probably had at one point.
@@cameronlapage7386 As for DiCaprio, I haven't seen many of his movies, but have to say he should have got an Oscar for his role of Arnie in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?"
@@yutrops2193 What? I mean I know George had some clunky dialogue in the star wars Prequels but he's the whole soul reason the original star wars existed in the first place because that was his vision and he's responsible for the biggest twist in cinematic history. George has the talent to create awesome story's with a great vision, he just doesn't need to take full control over everything. He could write a script then hand it over to a better writer to improve his script so that the general story remains the same but with better dialogue.
If I may, as I recall, Mr. Lucas has always been open about the critics. He never get any due respect from them. He once said: "I don't get good comments from the critics, I just make good movies!" ;^)
After Lucas loses the Oscar to Woody Allen, Lucas responds, "i was a Great Dad." Had to be edited to be a jab at Woody Allen for becoming his daughters husband. Ahhhhhahahahaha If that was the purpose of the edit, then this vid is HILARIOUS !!!
Annie Hall is such a forgettable movie. I remember watching it and expecting something out of a movie that took Oscar from Star Wars.... aaaaand it was just an ok romance comedy. Just forgettable.
@Rodycaz I wont argue with that storytelling part. But movie is not all about storytelling. Movie is visual and how the story is portrayed. Even if Annie Hall is way better story and written marvellously, to me Star Wars is a superior Movie. There might be countless "good vs bad" stories but not many are told as well as Star Wars. Even now as Dune 2020 is coming and Ive read Dune books, which are amazing btw., and I have learned how much Lucas was influenced by it, it doesnt really take away anything from Star Wars. The original SW trilogy is phenomenal MOVIE trilogy which will remain a timeless classic. I can agree that the story might not be powerful at all as a book (havent read any sw books) but as movies they are simply amazing. Star Wars movie changed the movie industry forever and you say "its not anything special"? You are looking at it from such a narrow one dimensional standpoint that it is not fair for the film. Annie Hall has nothing on the special effects, musical score and it didnt raise grand emotions on me like Star Wars did and still does. Edit. + I am ok with Lucas not getting best director because apparently he was not really good at it. The movie was saved in the edit. But that made it the best movie of that time.
@Rodycaz Why Annie Hall is so much better? When it is just commonly funny and pretty basic love story. If there was something very unique about it went off my head or forgot about those aspects. I just didnt thinknit was any special.
@Rodycaz So you think that acting is the only crieria for the best picture? I listed multiple aspects in SW that are ground braking. There are memorable characters even though acting might not be the best. But I dont consider acting bad. So if Annie Halll only has acting, then give those actors the Oscars personally. Acting doesnt make movie good if its boring otherwise.
Ricky Downes III sometimes I wonder if Lucas really is a great writer and we are jjust not able to grasp his insanely brilliant prequels hidden message
Jonas Whitt I have and it stinks. It was boring and you get to hear Woody Allen whine about the relationship he had with his ex for 90 plus minutes. That was 90 minutes I’ll never get back.
