I believe George is a victim of his own success. In another timeline, HBO never picked up Game of Thrones, and George finished the ASOIAF series before 2020.

Don't see him as a victim, if he doesn't care enough or can't put himself to writing those he could at least be honest with asoiaf readers and tell them to stop expecting any next book.

Agreed, he went from being a fairly successful author to insane levels of stardom thanks to the TV show. It's a lot of pressure and so many distractions since finishing Dance that honestly I'm beginning to understand why this is taking so long. These books are so big and he's had so much going on in his life, it can't be easy, and I bet he's been second guessing himself a lot because of it all too.

I think that viral post going around about George perfectly breaks it down. It compares him to Tolkien (as George himself constantly does) and to summarise it basically concludes something i've believed for a long time, but he put it in very eloquent words, which is that George clearly has a conflict in himself over what he wants his story to be. Deep down George seems to love Tolkien's manner of storytelling (as most humans do) but his half-baked personal beliefs won't allow him to just indulge that. He says himself he's a fan of Tolkien's and it's actually insane how much he takes from Tolkien but he has also been quite critical of many aspects and outwardly seems to suggest that his works are the sort of "more realistic" works that are "fixing" some of the issues he sees with Tolkien. The problem is, George's worldview is a collection of nihilism and edgy indulgent materialism. In his worldview prophecies and religions (in a world where literal magic exists and Gods are implied to exist) are just there to manipulate you, there's no such thing as a hero because "good guys finish last and Machiavellian politicians always win" and we're all base creatures who only care about sex, drugs and stamping on the little guy or being cowards. The only heroes are naive idiots who get killed for being too pure. So, in that world how can a hero rise to save the day? It can't. What George wants to do deep down is what he's constructed beneath all that nihilism and pessimism which is a prophetic hero who will sacrifice what he loves to save humanity from literal anti-life demon forces and then rebuild the kingdom like his forebears. It's clear that this figure is supposed to be Jon. Jon is the merging of the key bloodlines who possess the different potent forms of magic (old/green magic of the northerners and new/fire magic of the Targs). Jon is obviously supposed to fall in love with and then kill Danny and then defeat the Others - probably in some literal or metaphorical manifestation of the Nissa Nissa flaming sword, Azor Ahai myth. Jon then helps rebuild with Bran (Bran the builder) who would be his very own bloodraven with the repository of all information essentially serving as the Merlin to Jon's Arthur or Gandalf to Jon's Aragorn. By the end i suspect the dragons were supposed to all die and magic was supposed to fade (again taking from Tolkien as this is what the Elves leaving and the Numenorians dwindling represent) so that an age of man can come about. This likely was meant to entail Jon and Bran being the last of a small number of magical beings who were on their way out with no more dragons left in the world and the Others gone forever returning whatever balance was disrupted in the beginning. There could be many theories of what that is but it seems clearest to me that whatever the Fire magic people did (Targs and their ancestors) to create dragons probably has some tie to the Others. Ice comes to balance Fire (and possibly vice versa) and as one form of magic grows the other does too to balance it. That appears to be what George was going for. All of that is awesome, what an awesome world, what an awesome story. The hero Jon returning from the dead (by the way another thing George criticised Tolkien for with Gandalf) which would be great as it has all the layers alongside the prophecy and also Jon being released from his Night's watch vow, as well as all of the intrigue with warging and the theory that Jon wargs into Ghost, lives as a wolf for a short time and then comes back more "wolfy". There is so much awesome stuff that George has built but he can't allow himself to enjoy it because he's internally conflicted about the fact that he does. The true solution here is to merge these two things, it would be for his worldview to become less cynical and give way to the classical tropes whilst still retaining the grubbier and more morally ambiguous world he's created. Even inside that he can, and should, still have his "ultimate good heroes" and "ultimate evil villains". I mean, are we going to pretend Jon is morally ambiguous? Not really, he can get angry and sure he has killed people but basically everything he's ever done has been the correct, just decision. Meanwhile, are we going to pretend that Euron is morally ambiguous? The guy has literally done every possible bad thing and loves it. He's an unrepentant sadistic monster drug addict who loves power, possess a great deal of it and is more than happy to wield it against others in his goal to become a literal demon-God. Awesome...just so damn awesome and we're not going to see how this all plays out because George can't allow himself to just indulge what he really wants to, and what he already is against his "better" judgement. He should bring it all back together, tie all of the stories into a series of cataclysmic chaos of horrific wars where dragons dance, kraken create oceans of blood, supernatural demonic Others freeze the world over, creepy Treeman Bran does some bloodraven-esque twilight-zone Ent stuff bending nature itself to his will - and in all the death and loss one prophetic hero and his fellows sacrifice greatly to overcome it all. That would just be so awesome and it is the story that is in there below all of the distractions of George spinning yarns about irrelevant stories of far off lands that aren't really concerned with all that pursuing tangents that just clutter up the story. Some of them are cool, the development is great but he should wrap them all up and get the cast all moving towards one another. Realistically most characters are currently where they should've been a book or two ago if he wanted to keep developing them, he should've been more efficient with his pages but he really, really isn't. Too bad, work with what you got. It's so frustrating because there really is an all-time great fantasy work in there but it's being buried and swallowed up by bloat and a lack of vision but chiefly these things are borne out of George's internal conflict causing him to distract himself and avoid the obvious answers. If he made the decisive choice to end it the classical way I think all of his "writer's block" would evaporate and he'd be able to finish it in no time flat. That is evidently his mental block, it's "I want to end this in a non-classical way where my half-baked cynical nihilistic worldview is fully represented but which also doesn't suck". Well, his worldview sucks so that's never going to happen. It will either end terribly if he refuses to indulge fantasy...in his fantasy novel...or he'll never end it.

@@MrHarrystank I've always been of the view that he should've embraced the nihilism whole. It takes a selflessness and heroism beyond what humanity is capable of to put the white walkers down. They can be beaten and not necessarily at a great cost. But people aren't capable of putting the lesser tribalisms aside long enough to do so. Fate isn't going to offer Westeros endless delays and mulligans to get their act together. If they can't do what needs doing, then they're done. And they can't. So they're done. It's baffling that I see Orson Scott Card - who is very far from being a nihilist - more willing to explore themes of petty backstabbing in the face of annihilation then Martin. The Winds of Winter should be the nihilistic victory lap in which all the failings of Westeros come home to roost with finality.

i dont think its cuz of that i have a feeling that the pressure is cuz of a combination of a lot of things, the season 8 of Got along with the public reactions, i dont think a dream of springs will be easier, also the fact he had to work on lots of project outside of GoT like elden ring, or HOTD and seeing the producers and directors and companies try to rewrite something thats already been written to water down or translate it in the tv, even in the earlier seasons of GoT weve seen him be frustrated and this might be a horrible feeling but i really dont think we might ever see a dream of spring, i see george as a legend but eventually we dont know how long legends stay on this earth so at least we can give them flowers so they can smell them with the time they have in our world

adwd is my least like book because its just an entire book of setups literally nothing big happens its just set up after set up after setup, when I finish reading the book for the first time I immediately went to order the next part just to realise there is no next part, like this is how d and d must have felt no one ends on a clear plot point in the book. everything is cliff hanger stannis about to fight a war davos going to skaggos john dead sansa climbing down the mountain while being an idiot by unintentionally slowly revealing her identity theon captive of stannis aaisha captive of stannis brienne mia jamie mia tyrion about to fight in a war victarian just arrived barrsiton just started a war within the city quinten is debatable idk could be dead could not be need next book to decide. ariann going to aegon jon conn greyscale slowly driving him mad cersie is now either at the peak of her power or has no power at all like not even one character is left in a place where we can guess what will happen this would be a nightmare to write much less adapt

I don't think Martin realizes that the books alone are his legacy. All the TV spin-offs will be forgotten in a few years time, the only thing people will look back on in 30 or so years will be his novels and maybe the first 4 seasons of the show. The rest is all supplementary and won't matter at all, especially if the main series remains unfinished.

Not only will the shows be forgotten, they'll be rebooted! Harry Potter ended in 2011, the reboot coming out in 2026.15 or so odd years later. The actors change, the creatives change, but the books remain same. Game of Thrones will go through the same thing. In 15 years will get another adaptation.

Oh dear. Sanderson is the greatest fantasy writer of this generation. He’s the guy who actually finishes stories (even other people’s stories in the case of Wheel of Time). GRRM will forever be remembered as a could have been.

Call me petty, but I really don’t care how George feels at this point. He contemplates about his legacy, but still works in a lot of other projects while also saying that his main priority is Winds of Winter, just to contradict himself later by saying that most of his time was spent on television shows. Martin’s legacy will be about a book series that ends in cliffhangers because he couldn’t bring himself to write a fucking conclusion to it.

If he wanted to write it - he had a passion for it - it would be written. Simple as that. A book that you desire to finish would have been completed within the span of 15 years. It is bizarre to have taken this long, considering the story is in motion. It's not as though he is thinking of an entirely new book idea. It's already there. It is a matter of continuing a story, not starting one. How many projects do you have that remain unfinished? An essay? A DIY project? Another idea? Fundamentally, you're not completing it or making progress on it because you have found something better to do, something easier, something more exciting. You don't want to finish that project, deep down. It's a pipe dream. I would think differently about the ASOIAF situation if George wasn't so negative about it. Every time he speaks about the books it's more from a place of annoyance or irritation. Not a place of desire and excitement. If he wanted to finish it it would have been finished.

Pretty sure Winds will be released posthumously. He'll work on the other adaptations and maybe Blood and Fire as long as he's alive and then when Winds releases and most likely becomes one of the highest selling books of all time, the proceeds will go to his estate. Dream is indeed a dream but considering the cat will be out of the bag so to speak after Winds he wont literally have to write it we will just theorise the ending ourselves. Dream is more of an epilogue book, just to resolve the story thematically, most of the juicy plot beats will be in Winds. Lets not forget that though he's not finished with Winds he's still done with 1200-1300 pages which is 2 books for any other author 😂 he just hasnt figured out how to wrap it up or more likely he has figured it out but he hasnt worded the wrap-up. So im not too concerned, we will get Winds one way or the other.

He has CHOSEN to take those things on. He has chosen to focus on things other than working on the thing everyone is actually asking for. The pressure on him is of his own making. He can leave TV projects to other people, he can give direction on film projects to other people, but he won’t. He’s in his mid 70’s at some point ya gotta get over all of the external crap and focus on what you want to do. A mentor of mine once said, “You will make time for the things you ACTUALLY want to do.” It seems like GRRM is making time for everything BUT working on WoW, DoS, B&F, etc.

Its a bit of a double edged sword to suggest that the success of the TV show hindered the releases of the books because I know that if it hadn't been for the show, I never would have picked up the books. It may be correct that the success of the show slowed his writing, but the success of the show is what lead me to his writing at all

True. Every body and their mother knows about fantasy series adopted for popular TV/movies like Lotr, Asoiaf ect. Me personally never met anybody who's not into reading that knew about Elric of Melnibone, series that is fundamental to many modern fantasy books. Elric is literally almost 1:1 inspiration for Targeryens, Geralt of Rivia and many white haired Red eyed magical characters to the point of it being a thrope on its own. Terry Pratchett might be the only fantasy author that is more or less known without famous tv show, but i'm not sure if i'm biased or not.

@@bmp2791 Oh you are very right about Pratchett, my dad was reading Pratchett since before I was born, my wife is a huge fan of Pratchett, 80% of my friends are Pratchett fans, while I've only read 3 of his books (I need to read more). I didn't know ASOIAF existed until S1 of GOT was being marketed in the UK. I watched S1 E1 because Sean Bean was in it & he is seldom in bad shows or films. After S1 E1 I was intrigued found out it was a book adaptation which I then bought & read in it's entirety before S1 E2 was out. I have obviously read the entire series so far but in a way wish I had never known about it. What is out there is fabulous but the wait & speculation for the continuation of the series whilst GRRM gets sidetracked by every adaptation opportunity is frustrating to say the least.

GRRM just keeps chasing all kinds of new projects. Within ASOIAF itself, he keeps adding new characters even at a point where he should be reducing the number of characters. Honestly I think he should have just made several smaller series of novels/novellas all set in the same world as Westeros, that way he could explore lots of new characters, rather than trying to tackle such a massive story.

Baby Boomer writers are so spoiled and full of themselves. And they still have the audacity to attack writers from previous generations who lived in poverty and faced disasters. Truth be told, the best thing that can happen to ASOIAF is for it to remain unfinished. The fan theories at this point are smarter and more imaginative than anything he could actually write to close out the series.

Also him complaining about the world becoming more fascist and that being one of his reasons for not being able to focus is kinda weak, given JRR Tolkien fought in World War 1, lived through 1920s and 1930s, and wrote Lord of the Rings during World War 2 if I remember correctly.

So, it's so obvious now that not only will ASOIAF not be finished, but it's seems like there's a good chance that WOW won't even be finished. I'm at the point of acceptance to where it's time to just look at this from a place of empathy. I love George as a person and I hope he's happy. As an artist, I have mixed feelings about him. On one end, he is one of the best writers I've ever read but on the other end there's no way to interpret this in any other way as that he is inconsiderate to his fans. That's how he will be remembered and that is on him. He had a lot of time to finish the books, but he chose to focus on other things, and that's fine if that's what he's decided to do with his life but he couldn't even give us the respect and courtesy of being honest with us. He could have just been honest and said, "I don't want to, or I can't finish this story". Yes, there are psychotic idiots who would jump on him, but I think his true fans would understand What I can't accept is how dishonest he's been over the past decade, and I can't tolerate how he got us to love his characters so much and then just leave us all hanging when he kept stringing us along. I am just reading the books for the first time and I just started ADWD. I've seen the shows multiple times, so I'm not even reading for the story but for his beautiful prose. But I will say, reading Breanne's final chapter in AFFC and knowing that was published TWENTY YEARS ago and we will never get a conclusion, that's painful George. It's kind of cruel that George did this to his fans and the ONLY reason I say this is because HE purposefully decided to string us all along. He said we could all imprison him until he finished the books and then he followed that up with "I feel bad for your if you're hoping for winds of winter". As an artist, that's just not the way to treat your fans and, sadly, that's how he will be remembered. It's tragic. One of the best works of fantasy will never be finished and one of the greatest writers will not get his place of honor in the literary world because of his own actions. But you've made your choice George, just enjoy your life and story worr

WTF are you doing spending time with anything but TWOW?? We dgaf about fire and blood, edd, egg and the bloody tv shows. "But but but it helps him rest from TWOW..." Though I still do, it's increasingly hard to feel sorry for George.. it should be obvious by now that HBO has no intention to be faithful to his work, yet he still spends most of his time working with them and writting stuff for them instead of working on ASOIAF, his actual legacy... He keeps banging his head against that wall while also being surprised and depressed from that not too pleasant feeling he gets in return. I really hope he can find the serenity he needs to ditch all of that and finally get back to ASOIAF with renewed inspiration..

I think another writer will finish Winds of Winter since he has completed so much of it, but we will not get a dream of spring. Seeing him recently, he has looked very sickly and has lost a lot of weight. He's pale and worn out. I don't think he will live for more than five years.

Adaptations come and go. Some can be good and some could be awful, but the SOURCE MATERIAL is forever. The Source Material is the LEGACY. It’s a Herculean effort to unwind the Essos plots. No shame in that, he should reach out to Preston Jacobs and get his help. Preston is doing a pretty good job with his own fan fic version. There are a couple other YTs like Quinn’s Ideas (formerly Ideas of Ice and Fire), History of Westeros, David Lightbringer ( formerly Lucifer Means Lightbringer, In Deep Geek, Joe Magician, Disputed Lands and Radio Westeros who are super deep into the lore that could help him unwind and reunite all the loose threads. I think as soon as Jon Snow opened his eyes on TV and then the show confirmed his parents, that was the end. I gave up hope and stopped defending the great procrastinator and I think internally he lost the biggest reason to keep us on the journey. I love the world and the books he gave us, but I will forever be resentful for false promises and the lack of a satisfying conclusion (show and books)

This post really reinforces AdmiralKid's video where he predicts that WoW will, most likely, be finished in 5-8 years and George will most likely never live to write A Dream of Spring. It's a sad truth, but it is unfortunately the position he has put himself in. But despite never getting the end that he hypothetically could have written, I've come to peace that the world building he did is unmatched in the history of fiction and look forward to future authors telling stories within it like many already have done through ASoIaF fan works. Perhaps it's best if the ending remain only a dream.

At this point I'd rather just have a history-like appendix with all of the character's outcomes, sort of what Tolkien did at the end of ROTK. Make it like Fire & Blood and release it as it is. That makes the most sense, actually, but considering how GRRM doesn't want anybody touching his story after he's dead I'm not too sure he would choose that route.

He has himself to blame. He has made the decisions that keep him distracted from focusing on the completion of The Winds of Winter. He truly has himself to blame because of his own greed. I hate to say it but tell me I am wrong. The books, not the shows, will determine his true legacy. Tolkein is the perfect example of that. He doesn't owe us anything and we don't owe him anything, as well. He is going to find it harder and harder to garner any sympathy from anyone as time continues to pass. Steven Erickson may not be as "busy" as George, but his massive 10 book series, Malazan Book of the Fallen, is more complex, more expansive, and completed. If that can get done, so can ASOIAF. I don't know what George wants from his fans anymore?

I think Dream will come a lot easier than Winds. When Winds is edited, a lot of pa he's or lines of pride will be left over. If describing the exact shade of a weirwood's leaves pushes the word count too high for Winds, it's effort not required for Dream.

Right now GRRM legacy is about a guy who starts a book series & never finishes any of them. HOTD seems to be going downhill like GOT later seasons 5-8. I’m hoping Dunk & Egg will be different but I’m slowly losing interest in the shows cause I know how they end. Unfortunately the world that GRRM built is getting old with no new material. If he finished TWOW a lot of pressure would be taken off him. It’s also hard to feel sorry for someone that it takes 13 plus years to write a book while making millions of millions of dollars

It's possibly unfinishable, he may be struggling to meet either fan or personal expectations, or he may just be board of the whole thing at this point. My bets are on the last point. Most creatives need to move onto new worlds and characters eventually. He overinvested in the series and should have ended it sooner. Never mind bringing ASOIAF to term, he's essentially the 90 year old parent of a 70 something year old adult child.

House of the dragon neglects alot of things that happens in fire and blood the fact that there was battles, more alliances that daemon has made also jacaerys i mean their could have been 5-6 seasons if they told the story right they overlook their own storylines that they created... they skip and minimize, take away and add things that doesnt move the story at all and makesno sense,like why would rhaenys burst through the dragonpit to kill innocents and not burn the ones she would fight later.. because it wasnt her war to start? But then it becomes unimpactful it was just to stir the pot, to rile up the viewers of whats to come, but it is ineffectful instead the thing is WHY the whole thing is COMPLETELY UNNECCESSARY especially when rhaenys was never in kingslanding and if she did that would have burned them down not to embolden them it was just bad writing and they never again mention it, they doing the same with rhaenyra in making her desperate and calling her ruthless.. rhaenyra is desperate to put all them people in one place just for vermithor to burn them all and accept only one rider, that ran thru budget with unnecessary scenes of the dragons as DAEMON SAID " THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO USE THE DRAGONS.. BETTER WAYS" when i review the story its weak, the characters are weak therefore so is the story.. they minimize daemon just name him lord protector and his motivations is for his family, the realm, and the war he never stayed in harrenhall for a remainder of his time in the riverlands he actually did more than just sit there.. but they want him to be just dark instead of light and dark... they are weakening and minimizing the story and the characters they are mentioning how war is horriboe and bad and the war will be bloody and unlike any other that they have given it to the dragons i mean stating the bloody obvious they did it with all of them with rhaenyra considering to give up her claim to rule and whatsbeen hers since she was a little girl before aegon because she the oldest and more of targaryen blood than her half siblings and rhaenyra fears kingslaying she wouldnt kill them or give an order of their death THIS IS WHY THE GREENS FEAR DAEMON TARGARYEN AND LORD PROTECTOR OF THE REALM BECAUSE HE IS RHAENYRA GREATEST WEAPON sackings of duskendale by king aegon II before going to rooks rest i think they neglected this because they want to show aegon as a fool and ignorant of his council what because he wasnt taught? Daemon also wanted the greens to have the first act.. the books also make things clear that the show minimizes like when heirs are killed and innocent boys and also the greens are at fault for rhaenyra miscarriage "they killed my only daughter and they will pay for it" "only one would rule, a childs death could cause the world to burn".. i understand George criticism on the show about maelor because his death does unravel a load of events.. like haelenas suicide..

Though theres a bundle of reasons that could be the answr. Starting to think it now one of two things, he does not know how to write this as he fallen in love with the characters and does not want to end the story himself becauae, if he does, that it, it is all over, no more attention. The one I think is most plausible is that he does not want to release it while still alive, because no matter what he writes he gonna take a lot of flack from fans no matter what way he ends the story it will be wrong on their eyes.
