✎ He earned a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Illinois. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association. He was an English and journalism instructor at Clarke University. He began selling sci-fi stories professionally at age 21. The unexpected commercial failure of his fourth book, The Armageddon Rag, led him to seek a career in TV.
✎ In 1991, he briefly returned to writing novels and began what would eventually turn into his epic fantasy series: A Song of Ice and Fire. HBO Productions purchased the television rights for the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series. His work has been described by the LA Times as having "complex story lines, fascinating characters, great dialogue, perfect pacing". Two more novels are still being written in the Ice and Fire series: The Winds of Winter & A Dream of Spring.

It always bothers me when people scoff at Game of Thrones because of the violence or the sex. They write it off as people only watch it for the "shock" value and so they judge you for it, but they fail to understand the deep complexity of the characters and the storytelling that Game of Thrones offers. I have never found a show/book series, that has been so real and interesting to me. George RR Martin is truly incredible. The historical parallels, the non black and white nature of the world, the reality (minus the fantasy elements) is really an accurate representation of our own world. The good guys DON'T always win. People do bad things, but they are still people and their reasons for doing them are complex. It's a story about family and about clashing perspectives. People aren't just "born" certain things, they evolve into who they are over time. If you haven't ever read the Song of Ice and Fire or considered watching Game of Thrones, you're really missing out. It's incredibly visceral and realistic that it gives you a story that cuts to the heart of the human experience. Give it a try.

People should really be sex positive, instead of prudes and sexually constrained. Sex and violence is viscerally appealing.
@TheKarret

TBH, when gushing about the series, I mostly hand-wave the sex and violence, kind of like they're negatives. "The show is good _despite_ the sex and violence, not _because_ of it" type shit. I guess it's because oftentimes, stories DO rely on gore and nudity to draw a crowd, but with GoT, there's _so much more_ to it than that; the sex and violence is peripheral, almost secondary to the plot and characters, which is the REAL draw of the show. With this in mind, I haven't personally come across anyone who's negatively judged me for loving the series. Possibly because I'm quick to cast the shock value stuff to the side and correctly categorize it as merely superficial aspects to the story, and don't give much praise on them. It's the reasons behind these acts or the brutal honesty of a portrayal of a realistic war scenario, not the acts themselves. To loosely quote Idiocracy, I know who's ass it is, and why it is farting. And I make sure that people know, if I gush about it, that this is what I consider the draw of the show: the focus on the character's motivation and interpersonal connections and who X means to Y and why their death/abuse/betrayal/negligence/etc matters.

The reason why is because people believe that fantasy is for kids. But when you watch Pan's Labyrinth and look back you do see the adult themes in fantasy. Game of thrones is a fantasy for adults and it does literally speak to adults even me. In my opinion Lord of the Rings is a fantasy for teenagers Game of Thrones is really for adults

TOTALLY agree on that! That's an Emmy scene for sure. I always cry whenever I see it. It demonstrated the powerful truth of "The most powerful love is when one lays down one's life for one's friends." I can see the love on Hodor's face as he willingly dies to save his friends and on Bran's face when he sees that his survival was the reason his friend lost his speech and got his nickname. WO.OW!!!

So glad GRRM addressed that last part regarding internet culture and spoilers. A lotta people whine about the R+L=J theory, insisting it's 'too predictable'. It's only 'predictable' because readers cracked the code for us, posted their evidence, and spread it across the entire internet like wildfire. I'm glad GRRM is sticking to his guns and being true to his stories than trying to change it for his audience. GoT isn't about shock values and surprises anyway - it's about great storytelling.

Watching the Hodor scene again (for the billionth time) and I still find it so emotional. It's one of those types of scenes that seem to age so well. The more you watch it, the more painful it is. Perhaps it's because the first few times you see the scene, you focus more on Hodor's death. But as you watch it again and again, you begin to realize darker things. Like how Hodor's fate had been decided years before. How you know some part of Bran blames himself for his death. How Hodor's life had been ruined just to die the way he did, an honorable death which most people will never hear of. And I think that's so...tragically beautiful. These kinds of scenes make me live for G.R.R. Martin's works.

One of the coolest Twilight Zone experiences I had was in 2011 when my wife took us and our kids to the 2011 World Science Fiction Convention in Reno, NV, after I'd sat through the Hugo Award ceremony that year (Think The Oscars for Speculative Fiction), I had to excuse myself. As I was in the restroom, at one point, one of the forearm crutches I use to help me walk which were on the floor near me, skittered loudly across the floor. A deep, soft voice boomed in the room: "Oh, I'm sorry! Are you alright?" Gathering myself, I turned assuring the speaker that yes, I was just fine and not mad about my crutch sliding across the floor. The words died in my throat. George R R Martin had kicked my forearm crutch across the floor and apologized to me! I didn't say much after that but my wife, who was waiting out in the hall for me actually flagged him down and he happily signed books we'd brought edited by him or with his short stories in them.

What makes George better than a lot of fantasy writers is that he doesn't have battles between pure good and pure evil... but Ramsay Bolton came pretty close to pure evil. There was less good. “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago 1918-1956

Armin; I wonder if, at least in the books, he too could have his reasoning for going on the offensive against the living. idk if they'll manage it in the show, but, I could see GRRM giving NK a justifiable reason for doing the things he's doing. :0
@MarkerInTheSand
@MarkerInTheSand 7 лет назад
I'm not sure even the Night King will be pure evil. I bet there is some background that justifies his actions in his mind. Maybe he thinks that humanity must be purged because of something incredibly evil that the first humans did thousands of years ago, and that they might repeat again, or something like that.

She was in utter shock, besides that she has no time for displays of emotional outbursts and has learnt to restrain herself as she is Queen. She was so choked up, to near tears when she was talking about it to Jon (in a more personal and less formal setting) hours after it happened. "Express your beliefs" completely misses the nuances of the point Martin was making in that clip. Something like "understand that morality is ambiguous" or "don't oversimplify right and wrong" would be more appropriate.

Expressing your beliefs devolves your story into propaganda. Propaganda, by definition, is a piece of fiction that tries to make the reader think a certain way. It should show multiple sides, like a debate.

I just recently started writing my first fantasy novel about a week ago (planning it out would be more accurate) and I can't believe I've waited so long. Always been a daydreamer with my imagination as my strongest trait and I always had trouble figuring out how to use it. I consume good stories like a fat kid eats cake and I read nothing but fantasy all the time, but the second writing a 'novel' popped into my head it seemed too daunting a task. Once I started to write the story that's been in my head for so long it just started to flow. gradually building - becoming something I never imagined it could be, and it's not going to take me nearly as long as I'd expected. What I'm getting at here, is that I've found what feels like my purpose. I finally found something I know I'll never stop doing until I've succeeded because it goes beyond just being enjoyable. It makes me feel proud and fulfilled just knowing I'm creating something that's been in my head for so long. And a few weeks ago I was lying to myself about my "dream" of becoming a great graphic artist because I couldn't figure out what I wanted. Don't ever stop dreaming, and if you can't quite figure out what your dream is, drop the self-imposed barriers and ask yourself what you really want to create for yourself and those around you.

There are two point in the video that really hit home for me.. as an aspiring writer. The first one being express your beliefs, and I'm glad it was brought up here. I couldn't have worded it better. In order to write a book worth reading, you need to make the reader see your point of view and understand why you believe what you believe. The second point that hit hard was engage emotionally. Anne Rice said it in a separate video, that you really need to dive into the pain or the pleasure. You need to make the reader feel the way you feel or the characters feel. Thanks for the great uploads :)

When George mentioned about always making stories even when he was a kid, that really stuck out to me because I myself have been doing that as well. Though, not stories I tell to others, just stories that I keep to my self or act out with friends. One example, was when I created a large story about a group of people who wanted to travel the world and face the challenges that came to them, I was a child at the time so the story itself was not very thought out but, I acted the story out while playing with my toys and action figures, and even to this day I constantly make stories which I enjoy making into worlds and hope to some day publish.

Your favorite turned out to be mine. As soon as GRR said (more or less) that if you can imagine a world when you don't write, then you should look for something else to do, I bursted into tears. It got me bad. In a good sense. I cannot imagine not to write. I just can't. Such a great video and channel.

The amount of foreshadowing in these books alone is worthy of a place in history. I don't normally reread books but the GOT books I have and it hints at every single characters fate long in advance.

I loved hearing about GRRM's experience with rewriting the ending of the Pit and Pendulum in class for an assignment and everyone liking it. I have a similar experience from my formative years of an assignment to write something based on Oedipus Rex which was assigned reading at the time, and I chose to write the encounter with Laius on the road and the subsequent encounter with the Sphinx, only in a modern day setting. I had Oedipus walking along the side of the road in the rain after his car breaks down, and Laius comes by in a limo and splashes a puddle all over Oedipus, who taunts them as they drive off, which they see and decide to stop to sarcastically apologize and egg him on. This leads to a gunfight and Oedipus being the only survivor, fleeing the scene and encountering the Sphinx on the road the next morning after walking through the night. The Sphinx in this setting is a mysterious drifter who seemingly appears and disappears out of nowhere. The teacher liked my interpretation of it so much she had me read it aloud in class. People liked it, but I didn't get quite as much adoration as GRRM makes it seem like he did lol.

For me the most inspiring rule of success was number 2 "want it bad enough" and keep writing no matter if you can sell your book or not. I stopped writing for almost a year since my first novel, the first part of a series, was not a success in terms of the numbers of books I sold. However, rule number 2 motivates me to incorporate writing on my story again as a daily habit in my life and cut down on time for social media in particular my RU-vid channel.

Personal favorite was number 2. I am an amateur writer and these are the questions that I ask myself, like all the time. Just hearing an accomplished, best-seller author saying that you are a writer if you just have to write, gives me motivation to keep doing what I love, even if no one gives me credit for it But i liked 9, also. What he said, about wanting the readers to grieve and feels joy while reading his book, well I can relate!

Evan. Thank you for all you do to produce the series. I've been spending the last few months reviewing it and writing the rules of the hero's that speak to me in a note book. I have now over 100 names and 1000 rules. I produced a list of my favourite 92 rules for success and the people that spoke them for a college assignment, it spans three pages and is hanging in the classroom of the community college I withdrew from. The assignment was to produce 1 rule but I recognized he opportunity to utilize the months of jotting into a potential source of inspiration for so many. I hope the list still hangs in the class and is able to inspire even though I've withdrawn. I'd like to now ask you to consider for future videos 3 names. That I believe deserve to inspire. James "The Amazing" Randi, Christopher Hitchens, Dick Gregory. These names have been personal inspiration sources and I think their light deserves to shine in this shadowy present. Thank you Evan and all you good folk in the comment section. Continue to dream big and reach Ad Astra. -Logan ⭕ ⭕ ⭕

I didn’t use to like Game of Thrones (the books) until I decided to really sit down and read them with my heart instead of just my eyes. He’s one of the most brilliant writers I’ve ever read - and i read a lot. The way he sets the tone for every scene and how things move and then smells appear at the exact right moment! Like muses. Oh, it takes my breath away. I cry from reading his work sometimes even more than from the story itself.

Just because someone loves writing doesn't mean it's a career. Writing for money is different than writing for enjoyment. Getting to write your story the way you want it is a hobby and you might get lucky but you shouldn't shoot for winning the lottery as a career option. Learning to write for money is very doable but it almost always means writing genres and stories you aren't in love with because that's what sells. I've been in this type of career for a little while now and what I've come to learn is that people sell out and do "vampire" stories for a reason. They need to sell their books and pay their rent because the scifi/fantasy genres are really really difficult to make a living with. Most people who do those genres are either the top writers, got lucky or do it as their fun side hobby writing project and write the romance, mystery or thriller books to pay the bills. Chances are you will have to write romance...

I agree with a book needing to draw in the reader, if it doesn't you won't likely buy another from the writer.You have to love, or, hate or feel empathy, sparking emotion is key.I am a writer, and my characters have to have depth.

1. Know when to stop. If Martin knew when to stop better, he would have been able to reign in his sprawling narrative and finished the books by now. 2. Don't take on more than you can handle. If he knew not to take on more than he could handle, he would have limited his crazy schedule and had more time to write. OR he would not have signed off on the television rights before he had finished the books, or was so far ahead in the process that he was certain he could never run out of time.

People just loved it!!! I wrote a lot of short stories, and unfortunately my computer/ smart phone was is hacked and they (psycho) stole them all😑 But I do not mind, their are actually more stories living in my DNA....and furthermore, the fact alone that they stole them, is for me a sign that they are worth stealing.😊
