He was never obscure. One of the most prominent fantasy writers of our time long before the show. I still remember like yesterday when my friend gave me his SoIF copies to read back in 2007 because he thought that I had a huge hole in my fantasy fiction knowledge for not having read his books, and my girlfriend at the time had gone to a book convention to specifically get an autograph just from him a year before in 2006. His books were legend already way back before the show.

@troliol
@troliol 9 лет назад
Ash It's pronounced either "air-ee" or "ee - ree" George is pronouncing it wrong lol. I mean, I guess he can say it's pronounced differently in his world if he wants to, but it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense given that the eyrie is on a high perch like a bird's nest.
@ashlantis4561
@ashlantis4561 9 лет назад
troliolol lol Well I mean, you're talking about a world he created entirely, so whatever he says or however he pronounces things is right. Your point is like telling the parents of a child that the way they pronounce their child's name is wrong because you and other people pronounce it differently. The child's name is pronounced however the parents intended it to be pronounced.
@troliol
@troliol 9 лет назад
Ash I literally said EXACTLY what you just said in my original post, so I'm not sure why you're repeating it back to me. "I mean, I guess he can say it's pronounced differently in his world if he wants to, but it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense "
@ashlantis4561
@ashlantis4561 9 лет назад
troliolol lol You didn't though because thats not what your point says. He is talking about his world being Westeros, that he created. He's pronouncing it his way, which is in fact that correct way no matter how its pronounced otherwise. Whether its a real world or not is irrelevant when we're talking about Georges world. And your point said 'But it's a real word, and it seems like he's using it in the real world sense' which is justifying that its got multiple pronunciations. Hes not talking about real life, hes talking about ASOIAF and so am I and in that world its pronounced however he says it is. The point you made, the way you worded it, does not defend my point, it is in fact against my point. The point I made defends my own so how can it be 'EXACTLY' what you said when you justified it having various pronunciations and I didn't.

Dennis Reynolds Might be known by some, but not well known. Herbert Merritt, a professor emeritus at Stanford in Germany living with us for a quarter, was personally well-acquainted with Tolkien. An excellent guy to be around, teaching us linguistics of English and German with a delivery like Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain. Unfortunately, nobody ever asked him because HOBBIT and LORD OF THE RINGS were unknown to us in the early Sixties.

George gives everything a backstory and thats why his books are so popular and interesting, he gives character to a god dam throne, does any other book or movie do that, he talks of things that aren't central to the main focus of his story and gives info and past experienes of characters we only meet for a few pages, it makes it feel like a real world and that there are other things happening other than the main plot, thats what many films and books fail to do is give great detail to ensure there is nothing missed out and the whole creation of this world is included. The characters especially make the books and the show great, they all have motives and all affect the story, there isn't any dead weight, nobody is just in the book because they are cool. They represent something or have a purpose and if not then they aren't talked about or are killed off, keeping irrelevant characters alive or included in the main story makes the reader lose interest, Georges characters offer great detail and motives and a sense of real human characteristics. They show real emotion and conflict within themselves, they are corrupted by power and broken by war. The books literally educate you on how history makes people the way they are, how certain people affect anothers thoughts and actions. The detail just blows me away. Never before has there been so much detail put into a world that does not exist. He is able to make up history that relates to the present time showing how it has affected the timeline and the characters we see today. Thats why he goes down for me as the greatest fantasy writer ever.

You need only look at his "Not a Blog" to see he's done over a handful of interviews this October, undoubtedly taking time to travel and tour for his book sales. It's his life though, no one should be telling him what to do, and usually it's non-writers, trolls and short-minded individuals who point at these excellent interviews crying how he could have spent more time on the books. He can only write when the chapter comes to him, no interview or side-project is going to change his style, and it's produced (in my opinion) five epic tomes so far. That being said, if George keeps producing his tomes on pace with A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows, he'll go from having a legacy as "The American Tolkien" to "The Author who failed his fans and let an epic fantasy saga go Unfinished." I'm sure he realizes this is his Magnum Opus, if I recall correctly he's said it himself in recent interviews. But compassion has to go both ways, George is entitled to live his life, fans are allowed to be upset and worried that, after the seemingly thousand-year-gap between the last books, he won't finish their beloved series.

How do you fuck up a dragon-rider? you warg into that fucker and wreck shit. Bran inside the body of Drogon = destroys the White Walkers by himself. From the air. From a cave... far away ... chillin' and shit, basically an old god.

+Brandon Nobles ok....that has nothing to do with these comments but alright, how do you know that he can warg into a dragon, maybe nobody can.and you cant really call him an god as gods created something they didnt just have a power to control other beings (if they are good gods, they wouldnt control others but they would give them free will)
@Brandon-a-writer
@Brandon-a-writer 8 лет назад
I was responding to Bob's comment about how powerful Bran will become. A Dance With Dragons opens with Varymyr Sixskins hunting in a pack, as a warg. And when he hungers after human meat he remembers his father's (Haggon) views about warging, and what he calls "abominations": to eat human meat while in an animal was an abomination, to mate with a wolf while inside a wolf was an abomination, and, lastly, to take over the body of a human was an abomination. He even tries to warg into Thistle but she resists him. Now Bran is not just a warg. There are plenty of wargs, many in his own family. But if it is known of as an abomination to warg into humans, for regular wargs like Varymyr, a greenseer like Bran should be able to warg into people -- and does, as everybody knows he wargs into Hodor - and as powerful as dragons are, it has more to do with intelligence than power. Varymyr wargs into a bear, too. Now, there are horns like Dragonbinder said to be used by the Valryians to bond themselves with their dragons, though it's never suggested that they're wargs. Skinchanging should be the word for it, as warg is more explicit for the direwolves. Dragons are intelligent, sure, and maybe it would be impossible for a regular warg like Arya or Job to warg into another animal, especially a dragon, it shouldn't be beyond reason to think Bran would be able to do much more. He has range over *space and time* through the weirwoods, is thought to be the last greenseer. Many people mistake Bloodraven/the three-eyed crow's visions and apparitions as being those of a God. While I wasn't saying that Bran would be a literal old God, I was suggesting that someone with the power of a greenseer could hypothetically warg into a dragon, and to make short work of the white walker army, Bran in the body of Drogon seems like a pretty good weapon to have. I just thought it was an awesome idea for someone's character arc who is first thought to be a cripple, learns of his ability to warg and use the power of a greenseer, only to overcome his disability by flying -- something he is promised -- in the embodiment of strength and power. Not intending an argument with anyone, just a discussion. Cheers

This guy knew Hodor's origins the moment he wrote the character into the book series.I'm half convinced that he's written the major plot points of the entire book series already, He just goes back and drops in clues to things surrounding the storyline in future books and then fills in the gaps. I'm convinced he's left clues for Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring in Dunc and Egg and The World of Ice and Fire. There are multiple occasions of characters having dreams and things for events that happen 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 books later. How could he already know that's how characters were going to die? Unless he'd already written it and already reached an end game. The time between each books is literally him filling in the gaps and giving us clues. George RR Martin is an absolute genius. When we are all old people there will be massive discussions about his books and the themes of them much like people discuss Shakespeare in Modern day.
