do you know I come from Barnsley and did not know about this football manager until Friday their is talk of building a statue in memory of is forgotten amazing career world cup final 1958 second place. Olympic football final 1948 first place. third place world cup 1950 all with Sweden .as the man who wrote about George raynor in the Barnsley chronicle said . IT IS A ABSOLUTE DISGRACE THAT THE ENGLISH FA AND BARNSLEY HAVE FORGOTTEN THIS AMAZING FOOTBALL MANAGER how true those words are
He was manager at Skegness when my father Reg Scotson was there. He taught me how to head the ball he always found time to spend time with us,he was a great man and manager a pleasure to have known him.
He used to live on my dad's street in Armthorpe in the 70s. My dad and his mates used to bug him all the time to show them his medals etc which he was always more than proud and happy to do
I only learnt of this man and his incredible achievements today. I'm reading the biography of the great comedian Charlie Williams who before he achieved success as a comedian was a footballer... mostly with Doncaster, but in latter footballing years with Shegness... and his manager... George Raynor. It is obvious that George should have got a first division club to manage after his Sweden success. Perhaps too many didn't realise he was available? Who knows... it could have been him rather than Alf Ramsey in '66? But then again the "top brass" liked a certain type and no doubt he didn't meet their non-football related desires... just as Brian Clough didn't!!
After The olympic goldmedal 1948 several players in The winning team from Sweden became professionals and were disqualified to represent their country until rules were changed before The worldchampionship 1958. Gunnar Nordahl has because that never represent his country in a WC. And Gren and Liedholm just once when they almost were too old.
