The Georgia Bulldogs & the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have been playing each other in college football for almost as long as they've had teams. But the meat of this rivalry isn't what happens on the field - it's all the OTHER nonsense they've gotten into, from accusations of wartime cowardice to players getting rocks thrown at them to something called "The Plan." Yeah, it's a lot.

Dad was a Tech grad, I grew up a tech fan, now I’m a senior at UGA. Technically I’ve never seen my team lose this matchup. Of course, they’ve never won either

Another interesting bit: the uGA fans started throwing rocks and mud at the Tech players during their first game, so much so that they had to end early and run back to their train to take them back to Atlanta. Their passenger train wasn’t ready, so they boarded a box car. The train actually crashed (!!) and the players eventually made it back to Atlanta. A newspaper said, ‘The Wrecks Rambled Back to Tech, and thus the name Rambling Wreck from Georgia Tech was born. This is a part of our fight song, and also the name of the student body mascot, the Ramblin’ Reck, a 1930 Ford Model A sport coupe!

That makes zero sense. GIT is a technical institute. UGA is the state’s flagship University. It’s more like Georgia is all of Atlanta & Metro-Atlanta and GIT is Decatur.

Nice to see all those Lewis Grizzard clippings. My grandfather had a full collection of his books back in the '80s and he was quite the figure in Atlanta journalism until his early death. I think my cousin wrote a book about the rivalry back during the early '90s. Most of my mother's relatives went to Tech and my father went to UGA and played basketball there, so every Christmas was an endless hell of tired jokes about the other's school.

Their practice facility is named for coaches Wally Butts and Harry Mehre. It's called the Butts-Mehre Practice facility It's pronounced "Butt Smear"

Iowa-Iowa State would be a good one. The rivalry got to the point that it was suggested 1916, United States Commissioner of Education Philander Claxton(precursor to the US Department of Education) urged the schools to discontinue the series because of the escalating tensions between the programs.and they did in Basketball going from playing each other twice a year to only playing each other twice from 1922 to 1970 the last one being in 1935 and in Football only playing each other twice from 1921 to 1977 with the last one being in 1934. When was the last time the federal government told two college teams to stop playing each other. Not to mention just two years ago there was the marching band incident.

I think one of the reason why the CyHawk rivalry never getting recognition was bc they always played so early in the season when there's no clear projection on how good the team would be that season. If only they move the game in October where all the big rivalry game usually being played. I think they might had a chance to be "in the talks"

As a UGA fan who works in midtown with a bunch of Tech grads and family who are Tech fans, I can honestly say... I didn't even realize it was THAT big a deal until I moved to Atlanta from NW GA. Tech definitely cares WAY more.

Going to games at Tech where they don’t play Georgia, yet have multiple chants throughout the game of the specific hatred towards Georgia instead of the team they are playing like Clemson or FSU, is extremely bizarre. There isn’t one official chant or song at Georgia that mentions Tech, but there are at least 3 at Tech that you hear multiple times (ramblin wreck, white & gold, and good word).
