In retrospect Hawaii and Oklahoma should have swapped BCS bowl games. Hawaii would have more sense to play the Fiesta Bowl vs West Virginia and Georgia/Oklahoma would have been a cool matchup. Plus, it would have been a shorter flight, I think more Hawaii fans fly out to Arizona, and we could have had Colt Brennan vs Pat White/Steve Slaton. It would have felt more like a fair fight,
Big 12 champ was contractually obligated to go to the Fiesta bowl unless they were top 2 in the BCS rankings. And they didn't wanna have WVU vs UGA in the Sugar since that matchup and bowl game happened in 05 just two years prior... That left the Orange bowl as the only bowl available for WVU, which it would've been cool having them play a rival in VT. Then Kansas could've played UGA in the Sugar bowl and Hawaii playing Oklahoma in the Fiesta bowl. The problem there was Oklahoma played Boise in the Fiesta just one year prior and they didn't want to put a Non AQ team against the same team in b2b seasons. All that said, there was really no other option for Hawaii it was either Sugar bowl or no BCS bowl at all ...
I remember being in New Orleans for this game as a 17yo. Such a good time! Cafe Du Mond. Bourbon street; although at 17 idk what my parents were thinking... me and my brothers were wasted 😂 Hawaii fans were great sports both before and after the game. Great times! Good to be a Georgia Bulldawg!
This game is a great example for how a power 5 team might look dominate or unbeatable, but when they get matched up with sec team or the Ohio states, they get dominated.
