"Keep It Greasy", a tune originally by Frank Zappa, contained a guitar part that stuck with Gergo Borlai which caused him to use it as part of his drum clinics. This whole jam is in 19/16 time, but it's easier to break down than you may think!

To add a critical view to the chat here but only out of devils advocate is that: he plays his , and rather cool nonetheless, interpretation of the original coliauta groove which itself I think was a little superimposed over the unique Zappa composition. To back up this claim I present my break down. The original coliauta groove was a 4/4 beat with a three sixteenth note "tag" at the end to help resolve back onto the one with the odd meter looped groove. But when listening to Zappa's composed bass groove part, the biggest feature I believe within this keep it greasy groove, the bass part can be broken up into two 7s (with bass hits accented on the three of those 7s) followed by a 5 with accents falling on the first and third beats of that five. This written bass part then by virtue of Zappa's compositional consideration has a more cyclical flow which the original nor demonstrated contemporary drum part (within this video)does not correspond musically (or at least rhythmically) with the bass line the beat is superimposed over. I'm not a talented drummer like this guy but life allows me to feel the better beat would have followed or been written to the bass part as composed by Zappa meaning a groove matching the true groupings of Keep it greasy's base composition. The melody is a grouping of 7+7+5 with accents on the three of each 7 and accents on the one and three of the final 5. The compositional logic is then clearly exposed as Zappa highlighted the three of each grouping as a melodic motif. Something the drummers could have helped illuminate further in their own interpretation instead of resolving with a tagged rhythm at the end of a standard beat. Any thoughts?

this way of counting 4*4 + 3 is awesome but it only works here you have got to find the right pattern for counting for each Song for example: 19 days by Gavin Harrison is also in 19/8; there you count 7+7+5

For practice time signatures can be fun. But I feel drummers today are so obsessed with the technical, and technique of ridiculous time signatures it can really become "expected". Do you think drummers from the 70's put so much emphasis on time signatures when playing some tricky parts? No way, it was all feeling first. When you hear the groover here, counting isn't even necessary if you can follow the musical accents and patterns. I think musically the most unimpressive music is math metal, djent, or genres that purposely put emphasis on time signature changes. It becomes so overly written its not enjoyable because everyone does it, and heavily lacks feeling. Playing difficult signatures just for the sake of it doesn't improve your musicianship, at all. I think drummers need to learn to feel the music, and not count it. If you can write to any song by hearing the musicality of your kit through the notes. Than you wont be creating anything new in the world of drumming.

Meshuggah, one of the pioneers of that genre, started out with that in order to groove as well as they could without the boundaries of traditional 4/4 time but then other bands took it and made it something it wasnt meant to be. I agree, i cant find many bands in the genre i like, but some of them nail it.

He comes from a very small European country. He needed to fight himself up there with his exceptional drumming technique. It's easy when you are American or English. That's already an advantage. I am glad to see that the nowadays technologies are casting the world into a big equal pile where doesn't really matter which country you are from the only matter is your talent. Decades ago you had no chance to show your skills to the whole world unless you were American or English. Gergo deserves his awards. He has worked so hard and I guess his best is yet to come. He is an extremist drummer and the world always needed extreme talents. That's what we call natural selection I believe. If He was a normal drummer nobody would interested. Well done Gergo

Marco Minnemann played this exact beat in his extreme drumming video over 10 years ago. Still a great drummer and cool tune but it would be nice to see 19/16 played in some other fashion (i.e not slapping a few 16th notes on the end of a 4/4 beat).

Look up the MadRasana Unplugged Kanjira Quartet and the TM Krishna at Afghan Church videos. The quartet does something similar to what you're talking about, but it's 15.5 beats split up into a half-time 5 beat rhythm (so ten beats total), then a four beat single time rhythm, then a double time 3 beat rhythm (so 1.5 beats). The total turns into effectively a 15.5/16 or, more accurately, a 31/32 time signature. A 19/16 signature would likely be played as 6 in half time plus 3 in single time plus 8 in double time (12+3+4), or alternatively 10/6/3, or something even weirder, potentially - 14/5. That would give you rupak in half time (7 beat rhythm x 2), then jhaptaal in single time (5 beats). There are a million different ways to make it work. The Afghan Church video is even more complicated, and you can watch the video to understand it properly. And to make your brain explode even more, if you want, you can play something called a tihai, which is usually a section repeated three times to throw off the listener but one that actually fits within the confines of the underlying rhythm. And you can even layer tihais inside OTHER tihais. So coming back to the 19-beat rhythm: Let's say we want to end a piece with a 4 bar conclusion. That gives us 78 beats to work with. This is divisible by three. So now we have sections of 26 in which we can make a tihai. But to make things even crazier, we can layer a tihai INSIDE this 24 beat section itself and make it a tripalli (which is a single rhythmic line repeated three times at single speed, 1.5 times speed, and double speed). The way that works is you do an 10 beat rhythm with two silent beats at the end, which is 12 beats. When played back at 1.5 speed, it is 8 beats, and double speed is 6 beats (5 beats rhythm + 1 beat silence). 12+8+6 is 26. HOWEVER. You need the last beat of the very last double-time rhythm to land on the FIRST beat of the FIFTH (nonexistent) bar. Since there is one beat of silence at the end, you need to add two more full beats to the rhythm, which are put in between each of the sections of the tihai. So your structure now looks like this: [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\5+1] + 1 + [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\5+1] + 1 + [10+2\\6 2/3+4/3\\4] | 1. And the very LAST beat of the last rhythm is the FIRST beat of the next bar, which doesn't exist. It's very trippy, and I'm not sure I did the best job explaining it. And I've been playing tabla for 25 years. Lol. EDIT: 76, not 78. Dammit lol. But if the beat was 19.5/16 (or 39/32), it would work. My point is, nested rhythms are a big deal in Indian percussion.

Hum. He’s right. Jamming along with this. On this particular groove it’s incredibly easy to catch the 19/16 (obviously it helps to be a musician or someone who can catch grooves better than normal people) But I’ve heard other variations of 19 that sound and feel insanely incomplete and weird. But the way this groove is played it really doesn’t feel much different than grooving to 9/8. Cause the syncopation almost makes it feel more natural. Can’t explain it or articulate it better. But I love it. This is a fun groove to jam on. I’ll have to use restraint to not rip it off (lol jk) but I really dig it. Makes me wanna explore other time signatures that are only a 16th note off from a 5/4 or 7/8 Groove and try to apply a similar principal with syncopation to make it sound groovy

I have always loved this Zappa groove but unfortunately both Coliauta then on the the track and this guy here, whilst wonderfully talented, in this take miss the true quality of the groove. I have broke this down before but will do here again on this thread for the community feeds back but the groove is made intriguing by the written bass part and not by the more straight forward drum part. The groove is played in 16 th note value grouped into two 7s and one 5. The accented notes are the 3 of each seven and on the one and three counts of the five. This is where the 19/16 groove gets its syncopated feel and mystical element. The then 22 year old Coliauta superimposed a two bar of four, or 8/8, with a tagged 3/16 skip at the end over the far more complicated bass part giving a settled back beat over the initial part but also kinda ripping the accolades from the more difficult bass line by virtue of being a settled groove in that odd meter. I play drums, and I've since revisited this song by challenging myself to write a drum groove corresponding to the written bass part and not superimpose over it for drum patterns sake. I feel we can all rightly revise past traditions whilst celebrating their significance. The failure of this drummer here I believe was to feature the true rhythmic characteristics of the written Zappa melody as I believe Zappa probably intended for even the drummer to follow and not just with a back beat segment for conventional iteration for the average listener. The bass part accents are where I outline above and I think the drum part could do more to be involved in that scoring and it's audible effect on the listener

This time signature by Zappa in 19/16 "Keep it Greasy" (solo section) used to make my head hurt. But I find it easier to count in in 5/8 in a slower tempo rather than high Octane 16th notes and its easier to flow with it and solo around the groove.

Another fine song goes from 21/16 to 19/16 with a little 6/4 thrown in for fun. Keep it Greasy - Zappa. Sort of a love song.

Listen to the tune "Celestial Terrestrial Commuters" from Mahavishnu's Birds of Fire album. I think it's (another) great example of this sweet signature..

To an extent, if you guys have any trouble understanding odd time signatures, internalize the groove as anything starting with a 4/4 groove with a touch of a glitch. Like hearing a repeated sequence of a song on a broken record. That always gets my mind going.

I love Keep it Greasy! One of my favorite Zappa songs

Homie's a badass, obviously, but man... Frank Zappa is criminally underappreciated. As is Vinnie Calhouita. Instead, Tommy Lee gets icon status. That's unjust.

Wow!!! When I read the title I thought great another drummer showing off in odd meters, but I fell in love with this. I love the feel and character he brings out in 19\16. incredible

Odd meters get your respect instantly. It’s hard to count and play. Without tension and release it’s just the same thing over and over. Great technically, but no feeling. I’m working on 11/8 at the moment. 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5. Thanks for the inspiration.

6:39 double bass is like a a journey that starts with Virgil Donati then morphs into Akira Jimbo/Carter Beauford.
