10-time F1 race -winner Gerhard Berger was reunited with his 1989 Ferrari 640 Formula 1 car at the 81st Goodwood Members' Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. The former team-mate to Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Jean Alesi took a couple of laps to get used to the car again before unleashing the sound of that screaming V12 Ferrari engine.

I feel so blessed to have witnessed F1 mid 80’s onwards, even just if it was on tv. It was magical and we never knew lap to lap what would happen and who’d suddenly break down

First time I saw this car was with Mr Berger behind the wheel at Silverstone testing in 1989. It was the only car on track at the time and from Woodcote you could hear it around the entire circuit... Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of neck.. Great days that will never be repeated. 😊

I saw this car in Francorchamps on the Saturday qualifying run of the F1 race somewhere in the 80’s. The sound of that engine is unbelievable. So loud and high pitch…

@@paololocatelli7058 il bello era anche che all'epoca c'erano sia gli 8 che i 10 cilindri. La Ferrari era l'unica con il 12 insieme alla meteora Lamborghini. Quindi anche se eri dalla parte opposta dei box sentivi quando usciva la Ferrari....

Rear smoke is fine. Gerhard retired in 12 out of 15 races (he did not start in Monaco) in the 1989 F1 season 😁

@@mark4lev at that time the engines were designed to last only for one race. During the weekend it was quite normal to use more than one engine. So having a 35 years old engine still running today is just a miracle...

Until these engines come back, I’m never watching modern F1 again. And if you give two shits about this sport, you should start doing the same. The 2026 rules seem to be in complete disarray and Red Bull are probably going to keep dominating until then. If there ever was a time to speak up about these engines, it’s right now. It’s time to bring back these small, light, awesome-sounding cars again. It’s time to bring back the Real Formula One.

Saw this car race in 1989 in Phoenix. Never have heard a better car since. We were lucky as the crowd anticipation only ended up being a third of what was anticipated. You could move around and sit where you wanted as the event workers didn’t enforce your ticket or seat due you the light crowd.

I was imprinted on this era of F1. This will always be F1 for me. The cars were beautiful. The sounds and smells were magical. Modern F1 is just lifeless by comparison.

Cool to see that helmet in that car again. Looks like a few installation laps before the race. Brings back great memories of attending a race for under $100 surrounded by true motorsport fans. Now it's all Netflix drama filled with people that cannot distinguish an F1 car from an Indycar.

That smoke always had me worried back in the day. apart from the fantastic first win in Brazil the new semi auto gearbox was very flakey. Turned out it was the battery, if only they had that sorted they may have done Mclaren that year. Regarding the smoke I imagine the engine has looser tolerances than when it was racing so it can do more miles. Back in the day you could swap engines between qualifying and the race with no penalty other than $$$.

The blue smoke for authenticity, it was hard work being a Ferrari/Berger fan in this time period, the car obviously had huge potential, just glued together poorly.
