Geriatric Thunderbolt 1003 Hi-Low

Went to Shamrock, TX to attempt a video of their very dilapidated Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1003. RU-vid user KDKsiren and I were very surprised the siren even activated, as the horn has been pointing in the same direction for at least a couple of years. The siren appears to have fallen down, and has been put back up. They attached the standpipe to the pole using hose clamp ties, which probably won't last very long. The siren does not rotate, it doesn't have a functioning blower, and the one of the dampers is stuck open.
Shamrock also has two Federal Signal SD-10 sirens. One on the north side, and one on the south side. The T-bolt is in the very middle of town. Special thanks to KDKsiren and his dad for taking me along.

I know a person from there, they said in 1998, it was fine, but it fell over in the wind. But when it fell, it fell over on the left, that’s why the low solenoid isn’t operating. It also bent the horn and damaged the chopper cap, it also damaged the rotator and blower and horn. They just did a quick “temporary” fix until they got the parts, but thunderbolts weren’t being produced, and the last ones were sent out, so basically that quick fix became permanent.

That thunderbolt is trying to hard to stay in service and alert people of danger but it will eventually have to go. By the time I've commented it has probably been removed. It's really sad to see old sirens have to go :(

UPDATE: It has been reported the siren is indeed alive. Just to the point it just sounds dead. However I don't fully know. Due to it being on the Thunderbolt Sirens Still in Existence map.

Monroeville VFD #5 has a thunderbolt 1003 in about equally as bad condition, it hasn't been operated in years so i don't know how well it works, but the paint is chipping and the siren is rusty. do you think i should try and get my hands on it and restore it?

problems: 1 broken blower 2 broken solenoid or rusted damper 3 broken rotator 4 slow af timer for the hi lo or the af timer is underpowered causing it to be slow edit: also the working damper/solenoid is very loud

The flasher for the solenoids is inside the RCM3 box, and the alternation speed can be changed. This one is just set to alternate slower than most others are.

Still thx to the horn , it still does some good work , a normal 2t only gets up to 1/2mi, the horn gets it's distance up a bit , i think .

Man, your camera is so clear! Picks up sound good too. Will do my best to take care of business on Monday--- with good results I hope. Will keep you informed. Solenoid isn’t loud it’s just the blower died so the siren is more quiet but the blower is fixed now still doesn’t rotate

This video will probably become a classic, like the O'Fallon, IL sick 1000 video that Adam Pollak recorded a fiew years ago. I'm planning on going up to JTown tomorrow to record a pretty sick sounding 1000T at the high school, so there should be more sick Tbolt action coming soon.

The solenoid was louder than the siren itself. Does the condition of the siren have to do with how slow the hi lo signal was? Other thunderbolt sirens sounded like the tones were switching much quicker.

I dont live in america but for me i think the Hi-Lo sound isn't the one that is louder i think the one with the broken solenoid part is more louder since it has more sound and both opening thingy in the siren would even be louder than one opening thingy in the siren cuz if it is lo only one open thingy is also loud but if no solenoid is activated then it would have been louder does this make sense?

If you are talking about the broken solenoid, I'm pretty sure that happened when it fell over. as for the speed, that's completely fine. The flasher for the solenoids is inside the RCM3 box, and the alternation speed can be changed. This one is just set to alternate slower than most others are.

McCranine warning systems refurbished a 1003A in November 2020 they could refurbish this 1003 to probably.
