"Von der Maas bis an die Memel" from the border to the netherlands (where the river Maas is located) up to the Memel, "von der Etsch bis an den Belt" Etsch is a river in South Tyrol (under austrian and now italian control), and Belt is in Denmark but there is still a large german minority living there. Die Deutschen in diesem Film, welche die unsere Nationalhymne mit vollem Stolz singen, haben mit den späteren Generationen nur die Sprache gemein, den Nationalstolz leider nicht. Obwohl ich erst einige Jahre nach dieser WM geboren wurde, fühle ich mich diesen Deutschen geistig näher verbunden als zu manchen späteren und heutigen Zeitgenossen.

Aus dem Grund, weil die ganzen deutschen Zuschauer noch die erste Strophe gesungen haben. Das war noch bei viele in die Köpfen drin. Der 2.Weltkrieg war schließlich gerade mal 9 Jahre her. Der ein oder andere hat bestimmt noch aus Versehen die Hitlergruß gemacht - die Macht der Gewohnheit.
This was sort of before the denazification era in the 60s and 70s since it still was not long ago that the war ended. In that era everything loosely associated with the NSDAP became taboo. This win was however incredibly important to West-Germany since it gave them back some kind of national esteem to unite around that wasn't tarnished by the Nazis, even more since west Germany carried the entire burden of the past themselves since east Germany and Austria distanced themselves from it as quick as they could and took no responsibility for it. One of the reasons why most neo-nazism in Germany today is in the east
@@oddjonsson2815 the DDR denazified by just killing them lol. The lyric to the DDR's national anthem „alte not gilt es zu zwingen” refers to Germany overcoming it's past. The DDR did that.... by killing ex high ranking NSDAP members and „deradicalizing” ower ranked wehrmacht soldiers.
@@w7lves the high ranking yes. But they never took any responsibility for the Nazi's crimes. Instead focusing on the "brave socialist resistance movements". Hell, the old Gestapo basicly just got new jobs, building up the Stasi. West Germany's denazification was way more thourogh. For example when the new generation of students started to question their parents and grandparents during the 60s what they did and why, so they really confronted their past, far from most countries have done that, just look at Turkey or Japan

After winning the cup the German guests sang all three stanzas of the German anthem. Of course the anthem has the well known three stanzas but the West German government back then fixed that just the last stanza should be sung. But people made use of their free will and sang the whole anthem. So my late father told me who overheard the play on radio. In 1992 President Weizsäcker used his right to determine the anthem and ordered that only the last stanza is the actual German anthem. The reason might be that the borders mentioned in the 1st stanza (German Confederation) aren't anymore the actual ones of the Federal Republic of Germany.
It’s interesting as the third stanza was only adopted in 1952 after the poor reception to ‘Hymne an Deutschland’. What your father says shows how German patriotism survived the loss of two world wars, and their speedy recovery is perhaps indicative of that fact.

Die ist nicht nur nicht mehr aktuell, weil DE nicht mehr bis zur Memel reicht, sondern vorallem weil der Ausruf "Deutschland über alles" von den Nazis völlig falsch genutzt wurde und unsere Regierung heute entweder aus rechten Idioten besteht die keine Ahnung haben warum diese Hymne aktueller denn je ist, oder aus linken Vollidioten die sagen dass dies nur reine Nazi Propaganda sei. Solange DE nur von Schwachköpfen ohne jeglichen Sinn für Historie regiert wird, wird diese Hymne nie wieder in dieser Form gesungen. Aber wie gesagt, selbst wenn, die Hymne wäre aufgrund der heutigen Geographie ohnehin nicht mehr aktuell. Jeglich der Ausruf "Deutschland über alles" wäre nutzbar.
Sie haben noch die 1. Strophe gesungen Der Bundesrepublik war noch jung und die 3. Strophe des Deutschlandlieds als Hymne noch nicht in ihrer Routine Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit 🇩🇪

@@MRoesterreicher1 I'm not ashamed of my anthem, I love the whole Deutschlandlied with all of its epic stanzas. I just found the fact funny that they sang the "wrong" stanza of the anthem, which had changed almost 10 years ago. Also the reaction about this is funny (a danish newspaper was horrified about the spontaneous change of the stanza and what the Germans directly did after they had won again💀😂)
Because it speaks of a Germany 'from the Maas to the Memel' and 'from the Etsch to the Belt', which territory is only partly in today's Germany, and they thought an anthem like that would somehow restore German militarism that led to the war.
- 9 years since WW2 - the most of the Country also still covered by ruins of the war - Economy was on the rise but still not high Level - the remembrance of the people they lost at WW2 - the shame of what germans done to europe/the world - stay humble while you are at the top. You can fall very quick - the inner peace we been invited to a worlds sport event after large parts of the world fought vs. us And most important. The Players may knew what that will mean to the germans. Some historians say this was the day "Germany become a Nation again". This event gave germans a spirit of unity and something they can be proud of again. These men maybe felt they achieved something bigger and been overwhelmed by the situation so they looked thoughtful and sad.

Hm, ich freue mich darüber, dass damals auch noch die erste Strophe gesungen wurde, aber die Hymne der Deutschen ist das gesamte Deutschlandlied! Nicht nur die Erste, wie es nun mal nur zur Zeit der Nationalsozialisten der Fall war und auch nicht nur die Dritte, wie es heute der Fall ist. Deshalb finde ich es schon kritikwürdig, dass nur die erste gesungen worden ist.
Ich glaube das war zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht ganz bei allen angekommen. Das Deutschlandlied mit der 3. Strophe wurde ja erst 2 Jahre vorher offiziell zur Hymne. Viele haben wohl die 1. Strophe aus Gewohnheit gesungen. Außerdem noch eine kleine Korrektur, die 1. Strophe war auch zur Zeit der Weimarer Republik offizielle Hymne und wurde vom NS-Regime bewusst mit dem Horst-Wessel-Lied verbunden, um Kontinuität zu deuten.
