This is episode 20 of the Record of Arms podcast.
This episode continues the story of the fighter component, or Jagwaffe, of the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion. This was a Wehrmacht contingent sent to aid the rebelling generals and their right-wing allies in the Spanish Civil War. This aid was originally small-scale, but was expanded after the failure of the rebels' attempt to seize the capital. The Jagdwaffe was sent to Spain with biplane Heinkel 51 fighters, and when these proved a poor match for the Soviet-supplied fighters of the Republic, new fighters just coming off the production lines were sent. These were Messerschmitt Bf 109s, and the impact of these advanced fighters in Spanish skies would transform the fortunes of the men of the Condor Legion. This episode covers the story from the arrival of these formidable machines to the end of the conflict in May 1939.
