Jenny while I think you're one of the best online teachers out there , sometimes you're breezing through these exercises a bit too fast and I find myself pausing and going back. But it's probably just my frustrations with German.

pausing is the advantage of RU-vid. You can go back as many times as you want while in a lecture at a university or in a traditional language course, you wouldn't be able to do that :)

Hi Jenny, that was a perfect clarification. One question. (apologizing if you have already explained that in any other video. ) I am mixing one thing up which is the usage of zu and um..zu. When to use um with zu when to use only zu. For example for this sentence: I would say : "Ich sehne mich danach, um meine Familie wiederzusehen." but I think it has to be without um. Ich habe schon mal das Schloss in Heidelberg besucht. Es ist wunderschoen von dem Schloss den Fluss und die Stadt unten zu beobachten. Ich weiss nicht wie der Fluss heisst, aber er ist sehr schoen. Es gibt auch eine Reise mit einem speziellen zug und die Fahrt nach oben durch die Bergen hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Es war sehr spannend.

Dieses Wochenende mache ich nichts. Aber letztes Wochenende war ich in deiner geliebten Heimat Deutschland. Ich war in Aachen. Dann besichtigte ich die auf dem Niederländischen Vaalserberg gelegene "Dreiländerecke" (wo, im höchsten Punkt der Niederlande, auf einer "Höhe" von 320m m.ü.M., die Niederlande, Deutschland und Belgien grenzen), und die nahgelegenen Niederländische Süd-Limburg (die Gemeinden "Vaals", "Kerkrade" und "Landgraaf") und die zur Deutschsprächigen Gemeinschaft angehörige Belgische Stadt "Eupen". Da der Rückflug nach Mailand Malpensa von Köln/Bonn Flughafen war, habe ich nach Köln mit dem Zug gefahren und, weil ich viele Zeit hatte, bevor der Zug nach Flughafen abfuhr, habe ich ein paar Stunden im Kölner Stadtzentrum verbracht. Das Wetter in Köln war herrlich ! Sonnig und 29 Grad !

First, thank you very much for this lesson; however, I do have a question regarding this lesson. Hypothetically, if one wants to say something like: I am certain that the best way to travel is by plane." In German would be: Ich bin mir sicher, dass der beste Weg zu reisen mit dem Flugzeug ist. Or: Ich bin mir sicher, dass der beste Weg zum Reisen (ins Ausland reisen (ohne zu))mit dem Flugzeug ist. I dont' know which one is correct, and I am very confused at the moment. In Bezug aufs letzte Beispiel unter der Kopfzeile "Perfekt" - könnte man den Satz auch so formulieren? (siehe unten) "Karl hofft darauf, die Prüfung bestanden zu haben." Übrigens, aus welchem Bundesland kommst du eigentlich? Wenn ich es raten müsste, dann würde ich entweder Niedersachsen oder Hamburg sagen.

knapp daneben ist auch vorbei. scheiße hahaha habe nur gefragt, weil du ziemlich akzentfreies Hochdeutsch sprichst. Ich komm' aus Texas, wohne aber jetzt in Österreich und finde, dass, auch wenn ein Österreicher sich bemüht, mit einem Hochdeutsch zu tratschen, in neun von zehn Fällen seine hiesige Mundart zum Vorschein kommt.

What is really throwing me off is the occasional da-compound thrown into the clause. For example: Ich tendiere dazu, meinen Nachbarn um Hilfe zu bitten. I'm sure it has to do with a verb requiring zu, and the da is referencing Hilfe, but I would like some confirmation. Another example with the similar construction: Ich sehne mich danach, meine Familie wiederzusehen. Thanks!

I'm 100% with you. Totally at a loss as to what role it plays. I'm okay with the "da" compund in cases where there is a direct reference to a previous concept, but here they don't seem to be necessary (in my wrong reading). Still, we're unlikely to get an answer given it's an old video.

I found a native German online who explained it to me. It only happens with these infinitive clause constructions which have: a verb in the first clause that requires a set preposition to achieve its meaning (sehnen+nach, glauben + an, warten+ auf) which in turn are referencing a noun. For example, if my understanding is correct, the verb sehnen (to yearn) requires the use of "nach" when referencing who/what you are yearning: Ich sehne nach meiner Eltern (I yearn for my parents). But if you wanted to say: I yearn to see my parents again and need the infinitive construction, you can't use the construction we would use in English: Ich sehne nach, meine Eltern wiederzusehen because nach requires a noun/pronoun-- which you did not give it---so basically nach is naked without da, it cannot stand alone without a noun/pronoun when used with sehnen. Therefore, it needs to be "Ich sehne danach, meine Eltern wiederzusehen."

ok so if that doesnt sound natural. But if you say ''ich werde mit deinem Auto nach Hause fahren'' you are not asking him like i need your car(are you willing to land it to me) but you are just saying that you will take his car and he can not do anything about it?? I thought that i can say this (asking him for some sort of permission) with use of infinitive clauses or would be better to use conjunctions or maybe say that in more sentances and not complicate things? I know you can ask or say something in many different ways but i'm just trying to understand something.

Although "to drive into something" usually does sound like a car crash, I'm sure I've heard "to drive into the mountains" also, just as you can say "drive into the garage" without people thinking you've crashed into it. You could also say "up into the mountains." Yes, you can also say "drive to the mountains" which I think has a notable distinction from "drive into the mountains". With "into", it's clear that you're driving within the mountain ranges, while with "to" you might simply be driving within sight of the mountains, but not necessarily into them. Then there's also the rare circumstance where there is a tunnel through the mountain, in which case you can literally drive into it.

Die Kommas in den Beispielen, bei denen du kein "dazu" o.ä. bzw ein "es" im Hauptsatz hast, sind übrigens falsch. Infinitivgruppen sind keine Sätze.

+French Fan "dass" kannst du auch benutzen. Hat die gleiche Bedeutung.
