Only person who actually is the best for absolute beginners, i learn much in record time. You follow the immersion method focusing on real life, pronounciation and German life which is the best way and i learnt turkish in 2 months by it. Thank you for the clarification over the ß. I encountered a plenty of the ß when I had to read a bunch of maps rendered in German. For example, Russia = Rußland. (When I first found the ß in Rußland, I had a feeling that this ß was not equivalent to the letter B. Instead, it must be representing a some sort of 'ss' sound, but I was not able to figure out why the ß instead of 'ss' back then.)

The snake goes ßßß then, I'm a native spanish speaker. And to us it sounds like a sharp S, which is not a academically recognized sound, but it is present in some variants of spanish, like in argentinian spanish where the z sounds is ignored completely and replaced by s or sharp s sounds, or even this little fella "ç" that is not a character in spanish but is definitely a present sound that replaces this one "z"

In German orthography, the letter ß, called Eszett or scharfes S, represents the phoneme in Standard German when following long vowels or diphthongs. The name Eszett combines the names of the letters of ⟨s⟩ and ⟨z⟩ in German. The character's Unicode names in English are sharp s and eszett. Wikipedia Language of origin: Early New High German Other letters commonly used with: ss, sz Phonetic usage: s Writing system: Latin script

Thank you for this explanation! I have been pronouncing it three different ways: The correct way Like 'sh', so I was saying "weißt" like "veisht" And like 'z', so groß was "grohz" I wasnt sure which was right so this really helps. Does anyone know if there are any accents where the other two ways are said? I'm not really sure where I got the idea they were options
@thocc5437
@thocc5437 Год назад
Don't think the "z" pronunciation exists, but the "veisht" (or more like "veish" most of the time) pronounciation is used in the region of Schwaben all the way in the south west of Germany. But it's dialect and not really "correct" so it would be weird to just say it like that if you don't talk in the dialect all the time :D Hope this was informative :)

As a native English speaker with germanic family, and honours in English - it still sound more like sz, or a slightly buzzy s sound, to me. Ps; not arguing. Just offering a different perspective. To elaborate, an s sound to me is soft, like a snake hiss, but a ß sounds like a softer z, or sharper s. So like a middle ground. Great video though. And I love your entire series.

In a Mac (using SPANISH ISO keyboard as default) and Microsoft Word, the way to get the ß is actually "ALT/option" + "B". I don´t know if to works as you say in USA/English keyboards.

The "ß" is a ligature of two forms of the letter s: The "long" version that you see in old documents like The Declaration of Independence (ʃ or ſ) and the regular letter s.
@Schnabeltassentier
@Schnabeltassentier 4 года назад
mrcydonia almost. It‘s a combination of that „long version“ of the s and the german cursive „z“

If you have a PC and your keyboard has the nummeric keypad, the one in the right of the keyboard, not the upper nummeric keys, you can make the ß appear, while pressing Left CTRL, press 0223 in the nummeric keypad. Hope this helps the ones that didn't know about this. Tchüß!

If I recall, the old German script it was actually sz, and looked similar to the Greek letter beta. I'm curious if in ancient times past if the pronunciation was different.
@thocc5437
@thocc5437 Год назад
I think it has it's origin in the old german "sütterlin" letters which was used up until the end of ww2. Cause it's sz ("eszett") aka a mix between s and z, where in sütterlin the lower case s looked more like a long Latin f without the horizontal line and the lower case z looked more like the number 3, so in combination: f + 3 = ß

Tchüß and Tchüss are just differente forms of writing the same word? They are exactly the same? I have read this online and I got confused about it. Not sure if they are exactly the same thing written in different ways: "In northern and central Germany, tschüss is a standard goodbye in all but official situations, with the north preferring the older form tschüß"... Danke schön, Anja.

I always thought if ß is pronounced ص (put your tongue on your bottom teeth to say it) as ص is actually called Arabic sharp S and indeed sounds sharper than normal S. This apply for ㅆ (Korean double S), said sound sharper than the single consonant

I hope you can respond to this question that has been bugging me: double consonants before a vowel usually means the vowel is short right? So, in my book "kaffee" should sound like "kuh-fay" but instead it sounds like "kah-fay" with a long A. This is throwing me off. Is it because the word is stressed in the second syllable or some other rule? This book doesn't explain why this word doesn't follow the double consonant rule and I want to know why or else i cannot proceed
