its pretty standard in my area of CT (a 40 minute train ride away from NYC). I do live in a less affluent area than this guy's house. and our house was built in the 1970s (but has since had an update and addition). it has 10' ceilings, and a 20 something foot vaulted ceiling with skylights in the big open kitchen/dining area. with a balcony overlook from upstairs where there are three mid size bedrooms. We do not have a finished basement though because of radon gas. Most of my neighbors houses are wayyy nicer than this house though. over a million dollar price tag on a lot of those. There is no way this house would be affordable today though. I could never live here if it was purchased today. its a 1 minute walk from the beach so the property tax alone is about about $18,000/yr. I'm very lucky that that house is completely paid off, it only cost like $60,000 in the 70s. its now valued at an insane and disgusting price. My father who originally bought the house was a high school english teacher so we're not exactly a wealthy family. it just used to be possible to purchase a house back then with a lower-middle class income.

The reason there is a smaller dining table in the kitchen area is because most (or a lot of) americans eat breakfast at the kitchen countertop or table rather than in a formal dining room. the only time my family uses the formal dining room table is when we have guests for a family gathering on holidays, or if we're just throwing a party.

This is in a Connecticut suburb. A 2-parent/2 child family needs to earn about $275,000 a year to live "comfortably" in that State. Median income in the US as a whole, per capita is about $37,500. Housing varies a lot, but don't for one second assume that this house is 'typical', because it isn't.

Fact: the area (sq.footage) of the basement and attic are not included in the size of the home. 3,500 sq.ft. is the "livable square footage." The basement and/or attic can be converted into livable space in the future at the homeowners discretion. In this case there is 3500 sq.ft. of livable area of the 7,000 sq.ft. of building. The living area equals 3,500 sq.ft.; the attic equals 1,750 sq.ft; the basement equals 1,750 sq.ft. 4 x 1,750 = 7,000 7,000 ÷ 2 (floors) = 3,500 3,500 sq.ft. Also, garages are not included in the sq. footage of homes.

I'd say that house is solidly upper middle class for the US, depending on where you live. In certain areas, you'd have to be outright wealthy to afford a house that size, but the inside would be a bit more impressive. And yeah, yards can be a big deal here, especially if you have what we call an HOA (homeowners association). They can have very strict rules and fine you if you let your yard go. The idea is to keep property values up, but a lot of people strongly dislike them.

A lot of people want to make their basement into a game room or media room or a man cave or whatever. Some people even use it as a guest suite. If you’re down there watching your movies or whatever, you don’t want to have to run upstairs to use the bathroom. Probably he’s just going to make it like a guest bathroom without a shower. But if he intends to ever use it as a guest bedroom or just an extra bedroom, he would probably include a shower in it as well.

9:30 in my state there's no such thing as having a basement, but from watching American movies and TV shows, people with basements, love to make them a fun hangout. For instance having a pub in your basement, where you can go and have the beer taps and everything like that...... Often times billiard tables and arcade games. It provides a nice recreational area especially if you have children. Children are going to get into trouble if they're out on their own, so at least if they had an arcade and billiard Hall and pub, in the basement, you can keep an eye on them

The majority of houses in OH an western PA have basements, so I've never had a home without one. Basements can run from dry and homey to wet and creepy, depending on the water table, drainage, foundation settling, etc. If you ever look for a basement, the first rule is a wet basement is a dealbreaker. Fridges have changed a LOT in the last 30 years. Our fridges used to be smaller. When you see a house with a fridge "hole" surrounded by cabinets, but the fridge pushes 20cm into the room, you notice. That type of fridge has a "French Door" refrigerator on top, and a pull-out freezer on bottom. More energy efficient that way since cold air sinks. But yeah, they're huge. Ours looks monstrous in our kitchen, but then, pretty much everyone's does in unrenovated houses built before 1990.

The house I'm renting was built in the 80's, I think. The gap for the fridge is about 1/2 inch too small for the more modern side-by-side fridge/freezer I brought with me. Luckly there was a fridge/freezer there already, and enough space in a breakfast nook to park the side-by-side to use as a drinks fridge.

In the US, the laundry room might be on the 2nd floor, the 1st floor, or the basement. The advantage of a 2nf floor laundry room is that if a house has 2 stories, the bedrooms are usually on the 2nfdfloor, and that's where clothes are kept. If the laundry room is on the 2nd floor, you don't have to take the clothes far to wash them. I'm guessing that the bathrrom that he taled about for the basement would really be what some of us call a half bath: a toilet and a sink to wash your hands, but no bath/shower.

People can get a little crazy about their lawn. We "judge" each other a lot by how kept up the lawn is. Being a desirable neighbor is partly assessed by how well you keep up the lot your house is on. Besides general cleanliness and exterior in good repair, that means regularly cut lawn, no weeds or very few, usually a rich or deep color, and edged. Bonus points for ground lights, shaped hedges, light posts, stone flower beds, or other landscape dressing. Some Americans (but far from all) also live in neighborhoods with "HOA"'s which means Home Owners Association; that is a neighborhood that as part of living there, the owner agrees that a voted upon council gets to regulate the appearance of all the homes included in the HOA; so a house that is not mowed and kept to the regulations is confronted and required to keep the agreed upon appearances for that area or their is a penalty. And some Americans choose entire cities for residence that have rules about upkeeping the yard. They choose it so that there is less "blight" (trash, overgrowth full of pests and rodents, and just general distasteful appearance) near their own homes.

What constitutes a very good lawn varies greatly on where you live. In some places people don’t have anything but smooth cut grass on a flat section of ground, others have multitudes of decorative flowers and or garden beds strewn throughout. In this neighborhood most houses have about 4 1/2 acres. One neighbor has a horse but you need at least an acre and a half for that. The house next-door has a half an acre, and one of the houses (six houses away), roughly a quarter of a mile (400 m) Away, has 8 acres. Before anyone starts thinking this is somewhere in a deep rural area, we are 10 minutes from the Philadelphia city limits in Pennsylvania. This property has 37 trees on it, not including the three I just cut down over the weekend. My neighbor’s driveway has more than that lining each side of it that he planted himself almost 50 years ago. In short, what your lawn looks like, varies greatly based on the train and region of the country you’re in. Plus, we have front lawns, Upper and lower side lawns (or left and right, depending upon perspective and location of the house.) and rear lawns, Or a combination of several of those. Our last house was right at the street, and the width of our property wasn’t much wider than the house and driveway, but the property went back 400 feet (120 m) so it was all backyard.

In the US we have half bathrooms (toilet/sink) and full bathrooms (toilet, sink, and shower). Normally half baths stay on the lower floors for guest and full bathrooms on the upper floors where you will find most bedrooms in houses like this (You will also find most laundry rooms upstairs due to where this is where most Americans will be living/sleeping unless you have a single floor house.) You will find these mostly in master bedrooms (rooms which have a full bathroom connected to it.) Or if there is no master bedroom then it will be shared amongst the bedrooms upstairs/ and or if you have a house with one level they will at least be concentrated around where the bedrooms would be. He also lives in Conneticut in the US which is less populated compared to some states on the direct east and west coast of the US where there is higher per capita American citizen living in. This same house in higher populated states can go up to I from what I've seen for as low as 300 (Just a guesstimate on my part as I live in NJ) to if you have a high paying job/salary/whatever you do, upwards towards 600,000 for mid-to-high median making Americans. It generally will get cheaper the further inward towards mid-west US and also alot of southern states. I will also add that most median bracket Americans take care of their lawns to a smaller extent like this because we have town run I think or whatever HOA (From my limited knowledge in NJ) which will fine you in some states on not having clean lawns in newer communities for not maintaining your lawn. Landscaping is a big business in the US which are people that maintain lawns for a fee. Normally as well at least from what I've seen you will have an actual dining room for major holidays (where you would invite guest) and my family calls them sun rooms where we place smaller tables for every day use for the family for dinner.

If you have a nice home, you typically want a nice lawn. Also homes here in the USA very in sizes and cost. Lot sizes also tend to be larger as you live away from a larger city center. As for garages, those also vary in the number of cars they can hold. I myself have a two-car attached garage but added a second garage several years ago. The main 2-car is for daily drivers, my wife's and my car. The second garage is for two other older cars I have as well as all the tools and parts. The 2-car garage is basically 20x20 feet. The second one is 24x35 feet and is a solid 3 car garage with a lot of extra room. The size of the homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, other rooms all depend on how much you want to spend, what you need, and where it is. Also homes here in the US may or may not have a basement. That often depends on the location in the country. Down at the southern US basements aren't as typical whereas the further north you go the foundations have to be dug below the frost line. If you're already having to dig 6 feet down for the frost line you typically have a full basement. In general space tends to be tighter in the older parts of the US, like the east coast which was settled earlier in history. As you move west area there is a lot more open area so homes tend to have more of a yard.

This is a pretty standard house that can be found in most places the country, but it is by no means the only size or only layout. My house is built in the 1940s, and we to have a formal dining room a breakfast nook (this is why he had a table off of the kitchen where informal/everyday meals are held.), Separate first floor laundry room (Those sometimes this is in the basement or celler, or even on the second floor), However many bedrooms one would have, same goes with bathrooms. Sitting room/formal living room, an informal living room, which generally is a bit bigger, and may be a little bit messier on a regular basis. Basement, garage (Generally between one and three cars, but two or three is the most common), workshop, large tool storage plus various areas for the home heating system/furnace/air conditioning, hot water, heater tank, well tank (one out of every two homes in the United States is on a private well.).. and in more and more cases, the basement is finished, so it could be additional bedrooms, family rooms, in-home movie theaters, and in some cases an area is closed off for a wine cellar or a Home bar for those more inclined to drink alcoholic beverages. I’ve owned three homes, no two were alike, they were all very different in size, but as an example, they all had a formal dining room. They all had workshops, in some cases the garage was a separate building, and then one situation there was no garage. They all had workshops one had three floors in the cellar, one was a ranch with a finished basement, and one is a Cape Cod revival that has had two additions, Before I acquired it. Thankfully, this neighborhood has such a wide variety of homes, all built before 1960 at the latest. Thankfully, heavy concrete block, construction none of the newer quick constructed McMansions thankfully. It’s just a personal preference.

Front room = living room. Some houses have a family room/rec room in back. Whether they primarily use the living room depends on the family. Most post-1950s houses have an "open plan" living room/dining room/kitchen: no full wall between them. We still say "living room" and "dining room" even if they're parts of the same room.

Usually laundry is on the bottom or first floor so his having it on the second floor is not usual in my opinion. He has a pretty big house compared to most people but it is really nice. We love our colors! The dinning room isn't used unless you have guests over and the other table in the kitchen is the main table that is used. We like to have nice yards and keep them green for some reason. It is just something that we like to do and depending on where you live sometimes it is a requirement that you keep your lawn looking nice. Because the housing market is so high right now lots of people are renting instead of buying homes and even renting has become a hard thing to do. But to be honest it depends on where you go for the size of houses. On my block alone we have smaller ones and then we have big ones from the 1950s that are in amazing condition so again it all depends. The thing in America, we tear things down and build new things, while in Germany I noticed that while I was there that you fix what you have and improve it and make it better. I really liked that about Germany when I visited.

Washing machines here are usually in a separate, ground floor utility room or in the basement.

"Bathroom" in the US is at a minimum a sink and toilet, generally referred to as a half-bath. Usually a bathroom is a sink, toilet, and shower/tub combination. Bathroom and Restroom are usually used interchangeably but generally restroom has a "public toilet" connotation to it.

I never thought about laundry being upstairs, always basement. Then I lived in a house in San Diego, CA that had an upstairs laundry room and it was life changing! If you think about it , the laundry is right where you make the most laundry, bedrooms and bathrooms. Sheets, blankets, clothing, towels …. So much easier when it’s all close together and no dragging these things up and down stairs etc….
@NurseEmilie

You have the laundry room upstairs because most of the things you wash - bedding, clothes, towels are kept on the top floor. The air conditioning air comes through the vents in each room and the duct work for it is in the walls. Then there's a thermostat on the wall where you set the temperature you want. Some houses may have a thermostat in each room so you can choose how cool you keep your bedroom.

This would be a fairly wealthy person’s home in northern Illinois. Yes, lawns are important! Many people will split the basement to use for storage, a recreation area for kids in the winter, even put a bed/bathroom for an older child who wants more privacy. Plus, if the home is in an area which is prone to tornadoes, a half-finished basement can be a great place to wait out dangerous storms.

It's good to know that those "phallic" plants are "succulent"🤣 That is a beautiful home! Lush, green lawns are a point of pride for most home owners. Landscaping is a big business and there are tons of small landscaping businesses around the country. Some are simple and do nothing but mow lawns and trim around the property. Others plant gardens, make stone walkways and patios, etc. Some communities have Homeowner's Associations that ensure residents maintain their properties to a specific standard. They will send a letter reminding you to mow your lawn if it gets too high!

The difference between the house in Germany and the house in the US starts at the size of the property. Once you get out of a city, you have a house with land around it. The question is, "do you want a small house with land or a large house with less land? From there it can get crazy as people get further remote and have larger plots of land.

I would expect at least 4 full baths and 2 half baths in that house. If you're building a 4 bedroom house, you need at least 3 full bathrooms. Some people have more bathrooms than bedrooms. Garages are usually attached, unless built after the home was constructed or are used as a workshop. Most people just like to keep a tidy lawn. But a lot of people have to because of strict HOA rules and guidelines. They might even specify which grass varieties you can plant.

Even in bad areas, like Northside Milwaukee. I found that homes are leaps and bounds of what I saw in Germany. I've seen some really nice places over there, but very spread out. Then you have a place like the North and old North side of Milwaukee, which used to be predominately occupied by German immigrants, that have some of the biggest old world style houses. Also, we have a li'l Germantown inside of Downtown called Old World. Good place for drinks, eats and a boat tour. But yeah... You have these low income houses that single family, 3-6 bedroom homes. It's just alot of the areas, are not the best. But that is in the motion of change. Alot of out of town property and development companies are buying a lot of the houses. So quite a bit of the housing deadlocked in vacancy.

In America we have the dining room and the Formal Dining room. The dining room is where we normally eat and it is where you asked why they had the extra table. The formal dining room is a rarely used room. You use it to host dinner parties or for holiday dinners like Christmas and Easter. That first room he showed which he said was his favorite seems to be a music room. Normally that would be the Formal Living room which like the Formal Dining is not usually used outside of special occasions. That bathroom in that opening hall is for the guests you host to use so they don't wander into your living areas. That is usually the cleanest place in the house because you want to show your guests how well you upkeep the house.

Because this house is in Connecticut (a very, very expensive state) the owner is clearly wealthy. However, this same home in a different state (Louisiana, Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, etc) would just be upper middle class, not necessarily wealthy. Also, the kitchen table is called an “eat in kitchen” or “breakfast table”. Most families (that I know at least) use that one daily and save the dining room for special occasions like Easter/Thanksgiving/Christmas/paties/etc.

Chris, you should know that Connecticut is one of the eastern states, with a small, fairly wealthy population. This house is actually fairly large and quite well-to-do, by the standards of average Americans. Most people live in places that are half the size of this one, and considerably less expensively furnished. This guy is probably among the wealthiest 1% of the population. So please don't assume that this place is typical.

On the topic of bathrooms, most houses generally have three bathrooms these days. You don’t live in a house with a bunch of women do you. Given that we had houses just 100 years ago that didn’t have any indoor plumbing (I know, not all houses were like that), we’ve come a long way. Master bedroom has its own bathroom second floor has a separate bathroom for all the other people, first floor has a bathroom, etc. Some houses have a bathroom for every bedroom, it really depends upon what your requirements are and what that space is worth

The second dining area is called a breakfast nook. Usually much more casual area. Yes, both dining areas are used. But most would forego a formal dining area. But not all. You need another bathroom in the basement if you convert it into a game room. Why not have a bathroom there? Many house interiors are mono color but a lot are colorful. The laundry is on the same floor with the bedrooms because that is where the dirty clothes will be.

It might depend on if he wants to use the basement as guest space. If so, he might put in a full bathroom, with at least a shower. If not, basement baths are often just half baths, with just a toilet and sink. My house, and most of the other houses I've lived in, has the laundry in the basement. I do have friends with a second floor laundry.

I have no idea how there could be an average American house. I would say that house is pretty typical of a good custom home subdivision. In Austin, Texas, for new construction inside the city core, it could be average. The materials and detailing are very nice. You could probably buy it here in my small town, in an overheated housing market, for about $400,000 to $600,000. But we have had an influx of very affluent young high-tech workers. Much would depend on the size of the lot. On two acres in a hot market, it could indeed be a million dollars. And local changing conditions can make it crazy. Fifteen years ago, I bought this old farmhouse, largely as it was built in 1926, on four acres for $60,000. Today, as commercial property, I can ask $2-million, and I will get it. The house will be moved to a lot in town. In 1975, I bought a 2300 sq ft Victorian in town for $24,000. Sold it in about 2015 for $210,000. Today, after a lot of work, $600,000 would maybe be a starting place for negotiating. It's all about where you are and timing. It's not unusual to have different wall colors throughout the house. Mine, which is a restored 1920's farmhouse, has a different color in each room Central air conditioning normally requires large ducts to move volumes of air. The ducts are usually in the attic or in a false ceiling. However, there are newer types of air conditioning where the cooling fluid is pumped around the house to units in each room, so no ducts.

You have a half bath sink and toilet or a powder room, or a full bath which will have a tub, shower or tub shower combo.
