I’m a (retired) truck driver and I have a comment regarding the size of Walmart parking lots. In many regions, there are no truck stops and therefore nowhere official to park for the night. However, you can almost always find a Walmart and their huge parking lots are a literal oasis for exhausted truck drivers. They are well lit and Walmart security people patrol 24 hours a day. In many places, the local Walmart is much safer than a typical truck stop. I will be forever grateful to Walmart for the hundreds of nights that I slept safe and sound in their parking lots.

My Dad and my brother drove 18 Wheelers for years. We felt better knowing they had safe places to rest. The stores were open 24 hours so they could always go in to shop for drinks, food, etc. before they left again. We love truck drivers, they are the gentlemen of the highways. 👍👍

@@karmaoutlaw Some of our nearby Walmarts have bank branches inside them, & Eye Dr./ Vision places where you can get your eyes check and buy new glasses or contacts, any many different businesses. Walmart is definitely NOT a supermarket! Many people I know avoid Walmart unless it’s the absolutely only place to buy something that you need quickly. Such as my gluten-free friends can only find certain items at Walmart unless they want to order a large amount online and wait for it to be delivered. But ethically, in the last 25 years I can’t count how many tens of thousands of small businesses have had to close in regular towns all across the country, because a Walmart opened somewhere in their county. People were willing to drive from far out in the country to a Walmart so they could buy things cheaply and not need to spend time going many different places. They have so many different flavors and options because they want Everyone to find things they like! But in the small town I grew up near, when Walmart came to town more than 15 other stores had to close because they didn’t have enough sales to make a profit anymore. The Kmart closed, our Kroger Marketplace closed, a hardware store closed an office supply store closed, and an outdoors store closed, the sewing machine, sewing supplies, crafts & fabric store closed. A very nice clothing store closed, a really unique grocery store that had been around 100 years closed, 2 bookstores closed, 2 pharmacies closed. I think 3 gas stations closed. Just think of all the people who lost their jobs! Walmart has decimated the US countryside, and made countless small hometown businesses close down, which had supported many families for generations! In the beginning people would drive 15 - 25 miles to a bigger city in an adjoining county maybe once or twice a month, so they could shop at a mall, maybe go to a specialist doctor and also so they could stock up on food, filling their freezers, fridge and pantry shelves with everything that was a good price. Then they would not need to go shopping so often. People tended to buy as much as possible at a mega mart when shopping at a farther away Walmart. Now most rural counties in the US have a Walmart at least in the County seat. Walmart purchases cheap items from China for a very low price, because they buy such a large volume. Other stores cannot compete with the deal Walmart gets from the east Chinese factories. It has also put out of business many US factories, and many factory workers who formerly were members of unions and had good paying jobs. The US economy has changed, and it seems like most people don’t mind relying on China. Some of us like to shop atlocally owned stores, selling US-made products. They are better quality, they will last longer, such as shoes or other clothing. So they cost a bit more. It’s becoming harder to find those type of stores in small towns. Walmart has now destroyed the downtowns of so many small towns. There are several I drive through now that used to have 5 to 10 businesses, & a couple I know only have one store left that’s open, a dollar store like Dollar General or Dollar Tree. More people are now moving away from small town‘s, because they have to drive so far to find every day needs they used to be able to buy in their hometown. so I avoid Walmart personally, but I do shop at Meijer and Kroger marketplace, which have some of almost everything you see in Walmart, just not quite as much of the various options. One thing that has improved is, most counties in my area now have at least one or two Aldi stores! Those save me a lot of money, So thank you for sending us Aldi!! But if I’m going to buy fruit and I want it to last for a few days without starting to mold, I will buy my fruit at Meijer or directly from someone who grows it. I definitely support my local farmers markets! Local is picked when it’s ripe instead of when it has not yet developed a sweet flavor; local produce tastes best!

The reason sales tax isn't included is because the amount varies from state to state and sometimes even from county to county; also, some items are taxed differently, such as clothing or alcohol, so it's really not possible to add the sales tax to the price unless the store does it themselves and with a store this big that would be hell for the workers. Realistically, only small stores add sales tax into the price into the US.

One thing nice about Wal-Mart is you can get all you need there. My best friend is disabled and only goes to the store once a month. She needs to use the electric carts. We get her medication, food, clothing, toiletries and whatever else she needs in that single trip. Wal-Mart has changed over the years. When Sam Walton founded Wal-Mart he stocked a lot of " Made in America " items. In fact, that was the big advertising campaign the company ran for years. "Redneck" is just another word for people from rural areas(typically, people from the southern states). It's interchangeable with terms like hick or hillbilly. Redneck originates in West Virginia, and comes from the miners in the Battle of Blair Mountain because of their red bandanas. Then, its used by the coal barons in a derogatory way to associate the unionized coal miners with communists. It then eventually got used generally as a term for blue collar working people. Hillbilly, especially in Appalachia, means something different entirely. Usually refers to usually off grid backwoods mountain people, and have a stereotype of being incredibly territorial and fairly reclusive

@@adamoakes5928 You're talking about the origin of those words - not how they are used in American English in the present day. For all intents and purposes a hillbilly (sometimes referred to as a hilljack) is a redneck who lives in the hill country. Some modern colloquialisms extend hillbilly to being a direct synonym for redneck even if they don't live in hills. In present day America redneck, hillbilly, hick, bumpkin, hilljack, and rube all describe an unsophisticated person who lives in the country and regardless of their original meanings and distinctions are often used interchangeably.

A key thing to understand about American megamart is population density. The really big Walmarts, Meijers, etc. are usually found far away from big cities where not many other stores exist. One reason they sell things in such huge quantities is that families from rural areas and small towns might drive up to an hour to get to the nearest megamart, and buy all the things their family will need for the next month in one trip. When I worked with a colleague who lived in a small town, she referred to her and her husband going to Walmart for "provisions" once a month or so. The store's strategy is to buy a whole bunch of cheap land (cheap because it's in the middle of nowhere), and have you spend ALL your money there so they try to stock everything a family could possibly need. They usually have much smaller locations in bigger cities where land is more expensive and there are more stores competing, if they exist at all in urban areas.

Traditionally, sales tax is added at the check out because Americans in the past wanted to see just how much tax they were paying on goods. Remember, our nation was founded due to a tax revolt. Sales tax varies throughout the US based on state, county, and city tax rates. The average sales tax nationwide is 7-8 percent. Items can be taxed at different rates depending on the jurisdiction, alcohol may be taxed at a higher rate than general food items. Also, health and beauty products, fresh food or prepared food may have different tax percentages. Another example would be a Blue state taxing guns and ammunition at a much higher rate than a Red State for example. Alcohol and cigarettes are subject to "Sin Taxes" with logic being if people are going to buy these the government collects additional revenue in the hope to discourage purchasing. This doesn't really stop people from buying the product. It is more convenient for the retailer to add the tax at the end due to the varying percentages. If tax rates increase, it is much easier to make that change in a computer system than retag products on the shelf. The sales receipt usually itemizes the percentages paid by product category thus making it transparent what the customer paid in taxes. Another American tax eccentricity are the annual state sales tax exemption days, usually in August before the school year starts. States will designate specific weekend that clothing and school supplies are exempt from sales tax. This is to stimulate sales for retailers and save citizens a few dollars on supplies. This practice has been very successful and the retailers will advertise and offer additional product sales to encourage shoppers.

Walmarts come in a few sizes, so not all of them are as big as the one in the video. But even a "small" Walmart is a pretty big store with lots of different items. Another huge store in the USA is Costco. The joke is that you can't see the back wall of a Costco because it bends over the horizon.

For sales tax, there are three basic common methods: 1) You just don't use cash most of the time (a lot of Americans do this) 2) You can estimate about how much you'll need. It's easier after you've done it for a while. 3) Some women used to carry a calculator in their purse. Now everyone has one in their phone.

Wal-mart only started having sizeable grocery sections over the last 25-30 years. Before that it was more of like a budget version of a department store, hardware store, home goods store, electronics store combined. During the '90s the "Super Walmart" concept came about where they made even bigger stores with fresh groceries(K-Mart did the same thing with "Super-K"), and that's only grown over the years. They've pretty much brought this to all Wal-Marts now, so there's no longer "Super Walmart" AFAIK. So while many now have the things a supermarket has, Wal-Mart wasn't traditionally a supermarket.

I'm an older American, and as a child Christmas shopping and Christmas anything only started the day after Thanksgiving (last Thursday in November). Now Christmas merchandise and big store Christmas promotion shopping starts at the beginning of October. I find it annoying, because it's so commercial and profit driven to buy, buy, buy. We're inundated by TV and advertising for Christmas shopping months ahead of Christmas Day. The last 3 months of the year, and the following January as well, account for the largest percentage of annual sales for the American economy. For some companies, it's more than 60% of total annual sales. I live in San Francisco, California and big superstores like Walmart are not permitted in the city limits. One reason is San Francisco is very compact geographically (7 miles by 7 miles) and population dense, so superstores would dwarf everything else here, cause tremendous traffic problems, and put many local stores and businesses out of business. All the big superstores are 25 or more miles away. San Francisco is also politically negative about superstores, because they pay their employees the lowest wages and provide them with NO benefits of any kind.

In my state of Nevada, there is no tax on groceries/food. Food prepared/served at a restaurant is taxed. Fast food is taxed. You need to go to Costco next. Walmarts pretty much have very similar stock from one to another. Different parts of a state or country may offer different items depending on what customers want or need. They tried smaller stores here and there a few years back, but they did not do well. Customers then preferred their own, familiar stores with familiar, fewer items they were used to. You can order pretty much anything online from your local store to have it delivered to your home. Some items have to be shipped from a separate warehouse. Employees do your shopping for you. You can also order online, drive to the store, and they will load up your car for you. These options are available at many different stores.

Most Walmarts are similar in size to this one in the video. Walmart says the average super center is 182,000 square feet, or 17,000 square meters. Most have a bank branch, a hair salon, an optometrist, and a Subway restaurant. There are also Mega Walmarts that are nearly twice the size of this one. You saw the guns and ammo, there’s also house paint, hardware, plumbing and bathroom parts, limited furniture, vacuums, pots and pans, glassware, silverware, and on and on. My favorite section is the camping aisle, where you can get tents, sleeping bags, camp stoves, water jugs, camp cookware, propane and so forth. You asked about games. There’s usually a whole aisle dedicated to gaming systems and games. In the same area, you have laptops, computers, monitors, cell phones, ad nauseam. There are so many more sections I’ve not mentioned such that it boggles the mind. However, too many Americans take it for granted.

The reason taxes are not included in the prices is because different states have different sales tax rates. One state may have a 5% sales tax while another state may have a 2% sales tax, and keep in mind there are 50 states plus additional US territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa, etc.) So it makes more sense to let the various local businesses add the tax at the register at time of purchase.

The next week we were assigned the department we would work in when the store opened. That's when merchandise started arriving and we had to start stocking. I went to work in the bakery as part of the donut crew. We trained for 3 weeks to properly make the donuts. During training we worked from 9 pm to 1 pm the next day with no days off. That was before the store was open. Once we opened my shift was 3 am to 1 pm. After training for 3 weeks doing 16 hour shifts I was exhausted but well paid for that time and was able to pay cash for an engagement ring. So it was well worth it.

Hey Chris, a lot of states do not tax food only non-food items (only in grocery, not fast food). So if you buy bread, milk, eggs, coffee and bar soap and toothpaste you will only pay tax on the soap and toothpaste. I believe there is about a dozen states that still tax peoples groceries. Most sales tax rates range between 5% - 7% (though some states, like California, will try to squeeze out more) Tax is different in every state and even in different counties. We don't try to guess it, we just add an extra 10% to what we have in our carts. It is not a US habit to spend down to our last coin. Even when I gave my children spending allowance I gave them the extra 10% of money teaching them about taxes. If they by sweets, no tax. If they buy a toy, there will be tax. Easy!

Walmarts and Costcos are literally department stores on a grand scale. Harrods in London probably has about the same floor space but all the packages are much smaller. Walmart has standard and (and typically newer) super stores (which are about twice the size of standard stores). Costcos are literally warehouses and have more bulk items, but there is a yearly membership fee/card to get inside.

The thing about Walmart is it's not a supermarket. It was a huge chain store for decades before they even had food in the store. Besides maybe a few non-perishable items. The first one was built in the 60s and they basically sold everything else. It wasn't until 1988 that they built the first of what was called the Walmart Supercenter. They still continued to build regular Walmarts as well as a couple of Walmart Supercenters here and there. There are still a few regular Walmarts around but they are few and far between. It's almost always a Supercenter that is built now and a lot of the old Walmarts are being converted into Supercenters. It was kind of a genius idea because it's almost everything you need except groceries so they decided to add a supermarket attached to it. A lot of other stores do that now like even some targets.

Sam Walton was the first developer to discover that people will walk a long distance -- so long as they can see the front door, so they build in places with land in front, no parking on sides or back. They were also one of the first chains to use computers to manage their inventory, which allowed them to have more bargaining power, and provide things just as they are needed, no inventory purchased until needed. You do still need to pass a background check (no felonies, etc) to purchase weapons in most states. WalMart used to have a "Lowest Price Guarantee", hence the weird pricing.

Walmart didn't used to have a grocery (food) section. I remember when Walmart Super Centers started appearing, those are the everything-in-one stores. There are also Neighborhood Walmarts, a very scaled-down version (no optometrist, nail salon, auto mechanic, TV/computer store, restaurant, etc.). People who live in more rural areas will drive an hour or more to get to a Walmart Supercenter for a weekly or biweekly trip to stock up.

The guns he found on the shelf were BB guns: They are powered by compressed air and shoot light pellets. But the rifles in the rotary case were real firearms. Walmart caters to hunters and sportsmen and sell hunting clothing, weapons and ammunition. That includes hunting with bows and arrows. However, they've cut back on them recently. How many universities does the USA have? As of 2020, there were 3,982. Most are State institutions. "Redneck" is a term for a Caucasian person from small towns or rural areas, and usually is used to imply that the person is not well educated or has a low income. The term is a reference to the fact that historically such people wore very short hairstyles and easily got sunburned on the back of their necks. Sales taxes vary from city to city and town to town, and the amount varies by quite a bit. That's why we don't include them in the sticker price on items. Since I don't know where they are, I can't look up what their local rate is. But I can give you examples by telling you local rates in my area. The town I live in has a sales tax of 8.61%. The next town south of us has a sales tax of 9.48%. In countries that use the VAT system, they have the same taxation across the entire country and that makes it easy for them. But we only charge the amount the local government needs to operate. Since my town is smaller than the other one, it doesn't need to charge as much. Walmart is a very large chain, but they are not all the same. They visited what is called a Walmart Super Center. My town does not have one of those, and ours is much smaller. Walmart is not a grocery store; it's a department store with a wide variety of departments. The Super Centers have large food departments, but my local one only has around seven aisles devoted to food. None is fresh, just canned and frozen.

Btw weight gain does not come from simple sugar intake, such as soda's or even sweet candies. These products in general have simple sugars in which the body actually quickly processes into energy and burns off. It's the foods that one eats in which must be metabolized via the liver that creates the fat built up. Granted some food preservatives in sweet products can act much like other fat producing foods, but is mostly centered around chocolates, as chocolate/cocoa is a toxin via arsenic. Have you ever eaten one of those yummy powdered donuts that you can't seem to stop eating just one? Well the powdered sugar coating is actually a toxin also, it is this sensation when eating it that entices you to eat more than one. The simple general rule is all foods eventually are converted into sugar, so your body doesn't know the difference between sugar it broke down from a tomato, or sugar in a candy bar, what it does know is it's focus on converting all foods into a form of sugar. This is where it gets interesting because the body converts extra sugars that aren't needed into fat, fat is converted into various cholesterol's which are hormones. cholesterol's are then converted into other numerous hormones, can be growth hormones, it can be testosterone, or estrogen, etc.

Growing up in southern Michigan, sales tax was always 6 cents for every dollar, so I quickly got used to estimating the total when I was a kid, since I wouldn't buy things that were super expensive. And there was never tax on food, at least in stores like Walmart and such (there still isn't). But even now, since everyone who has a phone has a calculator, it's so easy to just do a quick tally of the tax by multiplying however many cents per dollar by however many dollars you're spending, which would be simple, at least for me, since I've always added up each item as I put it in the cart, because it's crazy to me to not have a good idea of how much you're spending by the time you have to get out your wallet and pay. Gotta be prepared~

When I was a kid, my stepfather worked as a department manager at the local Wal Mart, in charge of the hardware department. At this time, the only real differences between the Wal Mart you see here and the one I grew up with, was they had no food or groceries and there was no automotive center for basic car maintenance. Wal Mart was still a massive store with multiple departments for buying things all under one roof. Clothes, electronics, toys, lawn care, hunting, camping and sporting goods, house supplies such as cabinets and other storage options as well as home repair components and tools. By the time I graduated high school, they had closed their original Wal Mart location, and moved into their new Super Wal Mart which added to all of the aforementioned departments, groceries, automotive care, pharmacy and bath products. So while yes it wasn't always a massive store with groceries, guns, televisions and clothes, it has always been a grouping of numerous departments and selections under one roof. It's success is largely due to the capability to roll all of the purchasing, shipping and distribution of goods into one streamlined process all controlled by Wal Mart itself. But it should not be forgotten that the other main pillar of Wal Mart's success was the destruction of the small town landscape here in America. By this I do not mean actually tearing up property to build stores (though that happened as well of course), but rather I mean the aggressive manner in which Wal Mart would push other business's to need to shut down their operations, not just what are known as "Mom & Pop" stores, but numerous regions chains as well. As a kid when my stepfather worked for Wal Mart, their main competition in the department store arena was two fold, there was K-Mart which was nationwide but who had never really tried to compete by shutting down competition (at least here in Texas) and there was a more local/regional chain called Howards. They all three sold the same basic merchandise, often times from the same manufacturers. As a kid there were often important differences (to me at least) in that they would have different selections available for toys and video games (Nintendo, Sega). Part of my Stepfather's job as a department manager at Wal Mart, was to "scout" the competition's prices and make sure that Wal Mart's prices were always at least the same, if not cheaper. Wal Mart was able to undersell their competition simply because they fully control their own supply chain. They buy massive amounts of products in bulk and then distribute them amongst their store locations based on where the items show the best sales. Stores with lackluster sales will often have poorer selections of merchandise and sometimes two Wal Mart locations will be close enough to actively compete with each other for customers. In the 80's and early 90's this practice was certainly aggressive but not destructively so. After the founder of Wal Mart, Sam Walton passed away however, his children who inherited the business ramped up the aggressive tactics to predatory levels. In any case, it was more this aggressive practice of undercutting their competition even if the individual product sales were at a loss, that pushed their competition out of business. Now, Wal Mart is the only store within 50 miles or so that we can go to for most anything not grocery related. We still have several choices for grocery stores as the expiring nature of groceries makes it difficult (but not impossible) to impose the same stranglehold. There are in fact numerous towns and cities across the United States which rely solely on a local Wal Mart for all of their grocery and department store needs on a day to day basis. I personally go out of my way to avoid Wal Mart whenever possible. I will go out of town some 50-60 miles away, to buy non grocery products elsewhere whenever possible. I don't harbor any illusions that my stance harms Wal Mart in any real way however. For 90% of the populace near any given Wal Mart, they are easily the best combination of convenient and affordable, and folks ain't got time for all that. Still, fun video watching both your and their reactions to what they encountered in the Wal Mart. Thoroughly enjoyable. [edit] Almost forgot, on the tax aspect. Here in Texas at least, the tax isn't a concern on perishable food. It is on everything else though, but it's been the same rate my whole life and I've been calculating it in my head all this time. I don't even think about it anymore, I just factor it in as I add items to the basket. The only tax I need concern myself with when shopping is the sales tax, 8.25% of whatever my total is at checkout.

Older Walmarts are a bit smaller. Cities of 100,000+ might have 2 Walmarts. They come with controversy. Generally groceries are not taxed, although there some exceptions. Each state sets their own rates, with some not having sales tax, but income taxes, some have both, others have neither. In states with sales tax, it can also vary depending on the particular region you’re in. A city may have one rate, 7.5% for example, with the outlying suburbs having another, 7.25%, with the average statewide being 7%. Though no one likes paying taxes, most tax rates are voted on and decided by the citizens of the particular area. This is why it’s added at the end as it would be cost prohibitive to price each item differently per store in each region.

I was born in and still live in Texas. I was told as a kid that the term redneck originally referred to farmers and other outdoor laborers who often would get sunburns on the back of their necks. It over time developed the connotation of an uneducated, often rural, person and no longer has to be directly connected to the specific job a person does. As the US is such a big country there are many slang words that can be used nearly interchangeably with redneck. Hick and hillbilly are also common in parts of the southeastern US. I recall some older relatives of mine mentioning the term “goat roper”. I think it was an insult because it meant you were so poor you didn’t have any cattle only goats. Naturally, Texan culture and history is very tied to cattle (cows). Another point to mention is that terms like redneck or hick are often used to refer to people with thick regional, often rural, accents. Appalachia (refers to a mountain range in eastern US) and parts of Louisiana are known for very unique accents that many other Americans have some difficulty understanding what a person is saying. Hope this explanation helps for those outside the US.

That was not all that you can find in Walmart Superstores. Some stores have optician offices and you can order a pair of prescription glasses while you’re there. Others have restaurants in them like Subway or McDonald’s and still, others have small arcades or even beauty shops in them.. Also the garden department in a Walmart store has an outdoor section with garden furniture, plants and other decorative items. You can also find gardening tools there, although they do rotate the stock out during the winter to put all those Christmas trees in that section. my sister used to work in the jewelry department at our local Walmart and I worked in the shoe department so there’s even more sections that they didn’t even show you in this video. Most of the superstores also have an automotive department where you can get tires put on or an oil change done while you shop. There are smaller stores called Walmart neighborhood markets that are just groceries and personal care items along with a pharmacy, a bakery, and a deli. Also redneck is a term for someone who lives a simple, rural life like a farmer who doesn’t come to the city much and are therefore unaware of social etiquette. The term literally refers to the fact that the person’s neck and arms would most likely be sunburned from being out working in the fields, hunting, or fishing.. It’s sort of a less than complementary term for someone who is not considered to be cultured or who is thought of as naive, uneducated, or uncouth. Fortunately, most of the people that redneck refers to are aware of what other people think and honestly don’t care. They enjoy their lives just the way they are. In Tennessee, where I live., redneck lifestyle is pretty common. Rednecks are independent and hard-working and they like to drink and have fun. For some context, you can look up Jeff Foxworthy videos- he makes a lot of jokes about rednecks and their lifestyle.
