An airgun hunting for blacktail jack rabbits in west central Texas with a springer. As much as I hunt with PCP air rifles these days, I still really enjoy getting back to basics, especially with a quality rifle! Small game hubnting with an airgun doesn't get much more enjoyable.
This time I'm in the field hunting with a quality break barrel spring piston air rifle, the Walther Parrus in .22. The rifle has an ergonomic stock design and handles very well for hunting jackrabbits in the West Texas desert. the power and accuracy proved strong medicine on these big desert hares!
For a magnum springer, the shooting characteristics of this gun are great! A solid rearward recoil with not a hint of the "twanginess" of the class of guns you'll find in the big box stores. This is one of the best spring piston hunting rifles I've used in a long time!
Please Note: The velocities I was getting with the JSB and RWS pellets were in the mid 700's. The 1000 fps mentioned was with an alloy pellet. I missed this error in the edit.

Mr. Chapman, I would love to see more springer hunting videos. Watching guys shooting squirrels and rabbits with PCPs, to me, is about as exciting as watching corn grow. However, watching you shoot those big jacks with a springer really intrigues me. I get way more satisfaction out of taking game with a spring gun than with a PCP. Just wanted to let you know that there are those of us who LOVE springers and love watching people hunt successfully with them. Thank you !! PS. The one with you and Chacho is great also, and I've watched them both about 20 times each LOL.

I couldn’t agree more! You typically just get that one shot and it takes more skill and patience to shoot a breaker and follow up shots are a lot slower due to reloading so I feel more thought and concentration are put into each shot. You definitely feel you sang for your supper when you get that perfect shot and that feeling is so primal I won’t hunt with PCP’s and give that up. Plus if SHTF I can eat with just my just my breaker and not have to worry about air supply. I have pellets for days and always keep at least a few thousand minimum on hand.

I wish they still made this rifle! I love my Hatsan 125 Vortex Camo in .22 however it’s a little heavier and doesn’t have the sling mounts. The parrus would be perfect as it has suppressor threading for backyard plinking and seems significantly lighter than my Hatsan 125? I have a true hunter UTG 3x9-40 AO IR and have no issues with the scope because of the UTG 1-piece weaver mounts. I wish they would stop using dovetail rails. It’s so cheap to weld a weaver rail and with magnum breakers it’s almost a must.

Jim, I really enjoy your videos where you are hunting with springers. Someday, I'll get a pcp for hunting boar or deer but for now springers do everything I need from an airgun but I mostly just target shoot. I rarely hunt.

I just got a .177 Parrus with the synthetic stock. Love it already! You can really feel the power when you shoot it. So accurate. I can’t stress enough how easy it is to shoot . It’s loud though and that’s probably my biggest complaint which isn’t really a complaint.

@@americanairgunhunter Hi Jim!!! I saw that you owned one and I knew then that I had made a solid decision. I have many others guns including a custom.25 Marauder but this Parrus has really impressed me. The recoil is substantial and just over all feels like a man’s gun. I mean no disrespect towards anyone by saying that. My son who is 16 told me it was “too heavy”. I like everything about it though. I’ve had it 3 days and taken 6 squirrels cleanly. It ate a scope and I put another more stout piece of glass on it. Any recommendations? Thanks for getting back to me at all. I watch all your vids. Been reading your stuff since like 2010. I misstated it on the video, the around 1000 fps was the Sig Crux Ballistic alloy, 790 the RWS and 750 the JSB. I missed this when editing the video. The point I was trying to make was that I would choose accuracy over velocity, and used the wrong value (my mistake). It's also worth noting that this was not a heavy range session and I was doing a quick check on the gun before hunting with it, I measured the velocity with my Combro muzzle mounted chrony just to get a ballpark figure, and was mostly interested in the accuracy.

@@americanairgunhunter i agree 💯! For a breaker I think 28/FPE is overkill for most small game at 20-30yds shot placement and ease of shooting will always net you more game. The impact though with my Hatsan 125 in .22 on a squirrel headshot is definitely noticeably as it usually stones them, especially shooting quarter toward it goes in the front and usually severs the brain stem and they drop like a stone and no disco dancing. Rabbits are usually less dramatic.

@@deltanovember1672 I think that uses the same power plant as Hatsan 125’s so you’ll get slightly more FPE with the spring around 30-32/FPE I think and the Hatsan Vortex in .22 gets about 28/FPE

A note: JSB has 2 of 10 fliers with my Beeman 10616 177 gun at near1,000 fps. Same for my 600 fps gun. NO FLIERS with RWS Superdomes 8.3 gr at 998 fps, 18.3 fpe. Guess which pellets I use in all my air guns for hunting. Your mileage may vary, but my German gun likes RWS pellets. Pleasently surprised considering they are much lower priced... How about .31" group at 33 yards? I will buy that for a dollar as they say. Good video. Love German engineered break barrels.

I shoot PCP's so much I forget how satisfying it is to hunt with a springer. You don't have the range, but a solid shooter like this one reminds you of just how effective these guns can be.

Range is always limited by the shooter's ability as a marksman anyway. It doesn't matter how accurate a rifle is if the shooter can't get it on target.

I know people are talking about the FPS mistake, but he actually wasn’t that far off, I have the same exact rifle, and it shoots the 14.3 grains at 890 FPS which is a good 25 FPE. The 18 grains shoot at around 760-770 for me atleast, it’s a very nice rifle overall, highly recommend

Was using the RWS 3-9 x44 Night Pro on this rifle. There are several good scopes from leapers and Hawke that I use that will stand up to a springer, though this rifle was so smooth I don't think it would be a scope killer.

Jedina joj je mana tezina,eto. I sto ce ti verovatno trebati ZR mount da joj namestis optiku,jer ce bez njega da razbije svaku 😉👍

I have liked both the Hatsan and other Vortex tuned guns I've shot. What the Parrus reminds me of more than anything (and it makes sense with being from the same manufacturer) is the Walther LGV in terms of how it feels. Very solid punch at the other end, to be sure!

I’m leaving on a 12 day hunting trip down in Texas next week, and part of it will meet up with my buddy Chacho.... even though we’re hunting deer we always manage to get out with our springers for some rabbit as well. Hopefully put up another springer vid soon!

I just have to ask. Do Jacks require an "ultramag" springer ( .22cal 1000fps class). I was wondering if a standard power model would work, I would like to take my Beeman R9 in .20cal for jackrabbits but only if it's ethical.

No, any gun in the 16 fpe range will do, but I'd dial in the range if taking body shots, head shots go out as far as you can accurately shoot.

You can, but in a .177 you'll be shedding velocity more rapidly. But if you can manage the trajectory and windage, you can shoot out to 50 yards.

A one piece mount is always your best bet on any air rifle. If you can couple that with a weaver rail then you should be good with budget UTG scope. Just make sure your scope mount screws are tight and check the stock screws as well. UTG mil-dot scopes are great quality for the price and hold up well.

I'm wondering if I bought the right rifle?! I mean it was a choice between the TX 200 Air Arms or the HW 97k special Edition laminated stock, the price point is almost double on the TX 200AA , so I went with the HW 97K, as this Special Edition new sold for 495 euros! Dang it looks beautiful, and heard so many great things on the trigger, accuracy, great German build. I should be getting it this week. Excellent shooting with a Springer, really enjoyed this video! Reminded me of the many great jackrabbit hunts I did with my PCP's in the California deserts :-) :-) :-) Your 40yard groups were very nice with that "Walther Parrus"!!!! One thing for sure, you gotta be a real good shooter to be hunting with a Springer!! Lately I find Springers way more challenging, and less equipment to be hauling around! It's way cheaper too! Looking forward to finding the right pellets to shoot out of my HW 97K! :-) :-)

Should have got the hatsan 135!!i mean what's not to like?...heavy af...constantly breaks down...all the screws are soft ah and strip out just by looking at em wrong..haha just stiring ya up a bit lol..I went the 350 magnum route.i don't think it matters what rifle ya get aslong as you're having fun and getting the satisfaction out of it,i was a hatsan man for years ..til i got my 350🤘🤘

I prefer the finish of the RWS, but find the performance of the Parrus better for small game hunting. Both are solid performers and good value for money, my personal preference for a hunting rifle is the .22 Parrus in a synthetic stock.

Depends on the rifle, overall the gas piston edges out the traditional spring as it has a smoother shooting characteristic, is less hold sensitive, and can be left cocked without worrying that the spring will take a set. However with a high quality springer or one that's been well tuned the differences become less. I tend to look at the guns individually and make my call on performance

Feral & Untamed That’s what I’m shooting more often, and you can reach out a lot further and with more precision........but....... there is still something about a self contained springer that is great fun.... especially if that’s what you started with.

Hi Mr. Chapman! Congratulations for your honest and very useful review! I m writing from Portugal 🇵🇹! I would love to have your suggestion/recommendation regarding to a riffle purchase! I want to buy a powerful and high quality air rifle for hunting , pest control , targets etc...the options are Diana 48 , 460 mag, weirauch Hw90 ( gas ram ) and Whalter parrus. They all have similar prices here in europe ( 500/600 euros )The whalter is the cheaper( almost half of the price, about 300). However price is not an issue. I just want a very good one! Can you help! Tks

Hello Felipe, appreciate the comment! Any of these rifles would be a fine gun hunting and plinking. My favorite, and I think the most refined of the rifles you mention is the HW90. It handles well, solid accuracy and power for small game hunting, and it look great, this is a rifle you'll hang on to. The Diana and Parrus are a marginally more powerful, in my opinion not enough to impact the decision. However they are both less expensive than the Weihrauch. If money is not the object I''d opt for the HW90, and if performance/price are important, I'd go with the Walther. Regards, Jim

Hi Mr. Chapman! Sorry to bother you again! I havent order de Hw90 because i am not fully convinced and i need your expertise once again ! I love to shoot and hunt , however, i cant do it as much i would like. That being said, and after reading some reviews about gas ram leaking after heavy use and also with less or little use. I m wondering if a regular coil steel spring air rifle wouldnt be a more reliable and durable option. What do you Honestly think and recommend? Shoul i stick with wheirauch ( hw 80 or 77) or do you have any suggestions? Thank you again for your help !

I only hunt open sight with air guns always have same with 22s. I got so accurate I was like a trick shoter using medium to fine bead depending on the sights. And at 22 and air gun ranges, there is no real need for a scope. Unless you want to miniturize sniping a 22 just for fun, and shoot shots too far for a 22 without $$ of equipment and practice.

Alfredo Vallarta villarreal No it’s not too bad at all. The guns a bit on the big size, and depending on how big you are (13 year olds come in a lot of sizes 😀) you might prefer the slightly smaller Walther Terrus. It’s also lower power but fine for rabbit sized game at 40 yards.

Thanks Randall! I'd take a look at a couple of the Diana springers, the Diana Model 34 is about $280. and the Diana 350 Magnum at $300. would be good options. They have the power, accuracy, and are German made. The price point you mention limits the non chinese guns available. These are both moderately quiet, in .22 with lead pellets they are subsonic, most of the sound is the mechanical noise gnerated by the gun, and is more obvious to the shooters than to bystanders. @@americanairgunhunter - Thanks so much for your quick reply, Jim! I feel a lot better now, having some direction as I continue my pursuit to knock down their numbers. I got 3 last year in my tube trap, but all I've found in the trap this year was a baby possum. The groundhogs don't seem to like the bait menu of cantaloupe, reduced strawberry paste and red cabbage. Lol. It's becoming a Bugs Bunny episode and I'm Elmer Fudd.

I like air rifles because if you have a good back yard, you can shoot a deer from your living room coffee table through the sliding glass door, and not wake up your wife in the bedroom. :) No complaint about any smoke either. It is a win win! What an exciting industry! :) Actually, I as an engineering kind of guy, like the guns and shooting, because I admire things that require precision and skill that any individual can participate with.

I agree, the precision and tolerances are impressive. I laugh when a firearm guy complains "these airguns cost more than a real gun", in part because as far as I know there is no such classification as a "real" gun (of course they mean a firearm), but secondly they expect an airgun to be much cheaper. But why? The level of engineering and the manufacturing tolerances of PCP airguns exceed almost any firearm.....

@@americanairgunhunter yes way more engineering is involved with Air rifles IMO. Most firearm hunting rifles are very simple in design and have less moving parts.

Umm, how about not putting food leftovers and bones in your trash? If there's no food in it, they won't get in your trash. You could always run your leftovers in a blender and flush it down a toilet. Bury the bones in your yard or make stocks from the bones. Being more responsible about what you throw away would make a big difference.

Keith Griffin Hi Keith, No, it’s a lease a buddy had for a couple years, he let it go but picked up an even nicer property this year. There is very little public land in Texas, you need to know someone, pick up a lease, or pay a trespass fee.

@@keithgriffin7030 As a rule, no. Many of the people that let me hunt their properties do it as a favor based on personal relationships, so bringing people with me is overstepping. Every now and again I get a special rate through outfitters, such as our prairie dog shoot in SD, which I pass along. But if you live in Texas the most cost effective way is to get on a deer lease with a lot of other people, or do a budget hog hunt.....generally you can do all the varmint and predator hunting you want on the side.

Mr. Chapman, I like your videos and respect you as a person. However, the velocities you gave were WAY off. The Parrus can not get 1000 fps with the 14.5 gr RWS pellets unless you're dieseling the gun. I own a Parrus in .22 and I love it, but it gets about 850 fps with the same pellets which is expected at just over 23 FPE. The velocities you stated produce over 32 FPE !!! If someone watches this video, buys a Parrus and owns a chronograph, they will be disappointed at the power output. Everything else you said about the Parrus is spot own, it is a very smooth shooting springer, especially for a 23 FPE gun. I would love to go out west and shoot Jack rabbits like you do. Thank you for all of your good videos and everything you give to the airgun community.

Auto safety is always in the way, and on some guns you cannot even reengage it when needed.

My preference would be to never see an auto deploy safety again...... but unfortunately that's the direction many manufacturers are taking. While this is one of my biggest per peeves, I would not refuse to use a rifle if this was my only complaint.
