@Sarfanger
@Sarfanger 2 месяца назад
Tiger I wasn't unreliable unless it wasn't give enough spare parts, but Operation citadel was delayed multiple times just to have as many of these tanks in working order. Panther Ausf.D was unreliable when introduced but it never made bulk of force during 1943.

Not sure about kursk but exactly this happened at the battle of the bulge, less so due to mechanical failures but the panthers and king tigers simply couldn't deal with the terrain so they just continued the attack by sending the weaker PzVl's and stugs ahead which severely blunted the whole operation and ultimately led to it's failure.

keil is german for wedge (english) or cheveron (french). its basically a two sided formation, where the middle takes the lead (v shaped). its a modernisation of the phalanx (anchient greek) wich had a one sided line, wich was diagonal, to support the shield and spear right-hand fighting style of the spartans. on a top down view, it was a from left to right degrading line, to support shield and spear. the romans took this idea and supported it with their tower shields into a more straight line. later on came the V shaped fromation, inspired by the flightpattern of migrating birds. the phalanx is nowadays the most used style of modern infrantery formation, while the wedge is nowadays called a delta. because its an upside down V

One key reason why the German armour spearhead wasn't as effective as that the soviets stopped putting their artillery in a single line across the Frontline. Instead, they were grouped together in squadrons of 10-20 anti-tank guns, forming a wedge. This allowed the soviets to attack the side flanks of the German tanks. In addition, they also procured higher calibre gun pieces and shells, which made every advance and partial breakthrough very costly.

Putting the Panthers behind the Tigers was a mistake if the point was to put your most heavily armored tanks forward. The Panther had far more frontal armor than a Tiger 1 by any metric. The base thickness of the frontal plate may have only been 80mm to the Tiger 1's 102mm but the Panther's 80mm plate was sloped to an effectiveness of 140mm while the Tiger 1's 102mm was completely flat offering no additional defense. Edit: However perhaps it was because the Panther severely lacked in side armor? The Tiger 1 still had 80mm of flat side armor on the sides enough to resist a fair amount of weaker anti-tank guns especially at an angle. Meanwhile Panthers had side armor so thin that without their skirts they could be threatened by things as meager as 12.7mm and 14.5mm rounds.

Sounds like waste of Panthers, it is a medium in name only. When Germany had so many Panzer IIIs still in use, more wedges with Panthers rather than placing them behind Tigers would’ve better played better to what they had rather than simply using all of your best heavies in one spot. The Panzer III/IVs should’ve been in the middle using the big cats to reach enemy infantry lines.
