My mom grew up in a double wide trailer on the side of the highway in Louisiana. My mom has like 10 siblings. Medical care was castor oil in the winter time and prayer. My dad side, my grandma had children with different men. She was as baby mama. Both poor, both grew up in messed up ways. They are both living in their own homes, divorced, raised two beautiful respectable daughters that grew up in a middle class life. They both had very good reasons to stay poor and they didn't. My dad had a father in his life, but it wasn't his, one of his siblings (step father stepped in). My moms parents stayed married till they died. I knew some ratchet middle class Black folk. It's not the class it's the people. My parents taught me about respect, integrity, morals, ethics, and most importantly, accountability. My sister and I have our own houses, she's married with 2 kids, 1 of her kids is recently married with a child now, and has their kid. They aren't like the statistics or the stereotypes. None of us are, except me with my exhusband divorcing me. My exhusband grew up poor in southeast DC during the crack times in the 80s with a single mom. He is also doing 1000 times better than his peers. His mom taught him the same values as my parents. Which is why I chose him. We are still on good terms. Sorry for the long paragraph. Just wanted you to know starting out poor doesn't mean it has to end that way, nor does that mean it determines who you are as a person. The people in my life proved they are more than that, and showed their Black excellence. I'm sure your Black excellence is just waiting to shine if it hasn't already.
