As a Chilean myself, this was one of the most embarrasing national teams in our history, the coach before the world cup said "Chile will get at least to semifinals", there was a whole environment of success in Chile made up by the coach and the press due to some positive results during the qualifiers and friendly matches, but the final performance turned out to be miserable with defeats against Austria, Germany and Algeria.
For the German team, this match came at the back of the embarrassing 1:2 loss in the opening match against Algeria. - After it came the infamous "non-aggression pact" against Austria at Gijón, at the expense of Algeria.

Físicamente los mato alemania a chile . En el segundo tiempo nada que hacer ...me parecio que chile estaba mal trabajado , jugadores muy flacos .. bomvallet, garrido , bigorra , neira ....y otros pasados de peso caszely, rojas y carlos rivas , que ni siquiera pudo jugar .....los mejores moscoso, dubo , yañez y Letelier
Chile ya habia perdido en Santiago su ultimo amistoso contra Rumania, ademas Santibañez le amarró el puesto a varios regalones dejando afuera a varios de Cobreloa finalista de Libertadores 81 y 82, ya que llevó solo a Mario Soto como titular y dejó en banca a Letelier, pero en ese equipo debieron haber estado Gómez, Merello, Alarcón, Escobar. Le guardó el puesto a Figueroa (era su ultimo mundial) y en mediocampo prefirió a Bonvallet, Neira y Dubó que eran perfectamente reemplazables por los de Cobreloa.
