Hello, German hunter here. All those things you discovered in front of the deer stands are known as a Kirrung or in English 'bait site'. The trough with the roof on it at 40:35 is where we put corn for the animals and at 47:16, that is a salt lick. If you found any wooden logs cut in half with legs on them, that is also a place where we put corn for the animals.

As an ethnic German living in the US, I wish more people thought the way you guys do. The bit that starts at 59:00 was touching for me to hear, and, whether intentional or not, seemed to elude to the way people tend to think of Germany in light of its checkered past. I would like to take the opportunity to say that every corner of the world has a dark history buried somewhere in its past. And although Germany's is in somewhat recent memory for a few, it doesn't mean the culture is bad or the people are bad. The fact is that none of the people responsible for the terrible things that happened are still alive today, and although Germany still has its work cut out for it in building a brighter future in spite of the past, I can't think of a country today that doesn't. Germany is a beautiful land full of kind, smart, hospitable, witty people, and I hope more people have the opportunity to go there and experience it the way you guys have. Thank you for this video!

Germany holds a very special place in my heart. Our family was stationed there with the US military for 4.5 years from 2008-12. Our youngest daughter was born there. That magical place will always have my heart. Every word you said of your land, is so very true.
@YodasKitchen

What you say is true, there are good and bad people everywhere. We remember what happened during the 3rd Reich, but many forget other genocides that took place: Stalin's endless purges against his own people, the genocide against native Americans, the Armenian genocide, the massacres that happened during the wars of religion in Europe, to name a few. Nobody should ever forget any of these because they are lessons not to repeat, no matter which nation / ethnic group perpetrated them. Despite the history, I find that Germany seems to be quite accomodating to those who work. I have several cousins in law who are "minorities" shall we say and they were all able to study and be active in the medical profession in Germany. My wife is very visibly not European and when we were hiking in the Palatinate a couple of years ago were well received by the Germans we crossed on the trail.

@@YodasKitchen sadly yes media was taking off then, so we know more about the genocide on germans hands. but this is what we all live with today. to be german or white is to be automatically the enemy. we now KNOW what the racism feels like to all of you and in some ways its more harmful because its acceptable. you dont see racism to whites or germans in the papers or on news or see it listed as hate crimes, but any other race, you look at them wrong and you land yourself in jail. this is the MAIN reason i dont talk to people. you literally cannot say a thing without offending someone. tell someone they got brown hair and lordy loawd, hear the offended sing. we were not around then and we nor our land should be held to such accounts that people become divided and a whole new style of civil war happens...race cancelation. not genocide...but making a race so obsolete that they no longer exist by choice. after all most of are half breeds anyways...name one pure person. ONE. im half native, english and scottish (jacobite rebels). so im not pure. i could pull the native card, could.....but im seen as white and treated thusly. but my history is just as embedded in darkness as the rest. res schools. english slavery under kings. scottish slavery under kings. gladiators in the arena when they took over the empire. but we forget those people too. they werent tanned enough. and we forget it was the scandinavian who invaded english soil and took them over. long long lines of blood and we always find a way to blame one race. ONE. ONE

The "ancient stone marker" you saw in the middle of the woods is called a "Grenzstein". They marked borders between things - cities, petty kingdoms, your neighbors land, etc.

I have now seen at least 10 of your videos. They are captivating and addictive. But love the tidbits of hiking strategies and plant ID along the way. Lived in Germany for two years working for the DOD and we had one son born there. Have been once because Germany is so enticing. I am so impressed with your skill levels, filming and editing, which I must believe takes longer than the filming, it is done so well. On top of that your music accompaniment is excellent. I will probably not get back to Germany again in my lifetime, despite wanting to visit again for ancestry searches, so your video of Germany is spot on. In fact, all of the videos are spot on...THANK YOU SINCERELY, for your work, dedication and determination to have a great product. By the comments, it's clear that everyone feels the same. Keep up the good work!

not here in europe, in uk we got towns with 250,000 ppl in them, in uk your town has to have a cathedral in it before it gets city status, theres a town here with 250,000+ ppl in it next to a city with less than 50,000 in it, 1 has a cathedral the other doesnt.

When I went to Germany my senior year of high school it was in February during fasching. That really marked a turning point in my life; a broadening of my horizons. I am proud of how different I am from that person who knew nothing of the world. My heritage is German, that's why I wanted to go. But in case you didn't know, fasching is German mardi gras and an 18 year old is considered much more of an adult in Europe than in the U.S. And even though much fun was had, my favorite part was a hike through the black forest even if it was the middle of winter.

Really enjoyed this, I also LOVE your humor and your lightheartedness. Hey can I make a request for the next time you're going to Germany? It's the Berchtesgadener Land, a part of the Alps that will blow you away. Start at Konigsee (King's Lake) and hike up the Saugasse (Sow's lane) to Funtensee (lake Funten). If you still have some breath left in you, hike up the Watzmann, one of Germany's tallest mountains. It will be a trip of a lifetime, trust me.

Really nice episode. At 47:17 what you saw is stand where hunters puts salt. Actually that red stuff inside is salt that melts and drains into the grooves so deers and other animals could lick it. In that way they teach animals to come at that spot, so they can easily catch them from hunting tower.

You guys need to come to Canada! Fly into Calgary and head to Banff, Jasper, Kananaskis - tons of great hiking.

The music for the tunnel kinda reminds me of the music for the underground area in paper mario and the thousand year door!

41:55 That insults me on some deep, indescribable level, so I'm just gonna pretend I didn't see that :D And drinking warm beer...but you gotta do what you gotta do right? Better warm beer than no beer. Anyway, great episode! I've been in Germany couple times as it's our neighbor. But I mostly hiked in the Alps they have, in NP Berchtesgaden. Now when I see you guys in the Palatinate forest I realize how similar it is to our forests in Czech republic. I think if you guys would ever wondered to forest here, you wouldn't feel much difference. The hunting towers, feeders for deers, cutted trees waiting on the road to be picked up some day, the terrain and forest in general and sadly also graffiti on abandoned structures.

Hey guys, that’s so incredible! I watched some of your videos a few years ago and lost touch. But now that I’ve found you again, I realized that you’ve made it to my living room the palatinate forest! That's so nice :) We could have meet up in the woods and I could have had shown you around, what a pity. But one thing I must criticise: You went to Palatinate, one of the most famous regions in Germany for wine making and what did you drink out there?!? Beer from Bavaria!?! literally from another country… You should have tried some wine instead, oh bummer!
